Melanie sat alone sipping iced coffee at the corner table of the cozy Cafe in Alborn, MN, absentmindedly flipping through digitals of her most recent landscape photos on her camera. The photos of the rolling green fields and crystal clear lake were stunning, but her mind was elsewhere. Suddenly, the waiter set a newspaper on her table, the headline in bold: "6th Resident Disappears in Alborn". Just then, a tall man in a police uniform sat down opposite her, introducing himself. "Miss, my name is Detective Hunter. I'm investigating the disappearances. Excuse my interruption, but I couldn't help noticing your camera. Have you seen anything unusual during your time here?" Melanie's eyes widened as she set her camera down. "Es stimmt etwas nich mit. Shackelt sich merkwürdig an, die Leute die spurlos verschwunden sind," she replied nervously in German. Hunter studied her face, looking perplexed. "I'm sorry, I didn't quite catch that. What was that you said? This is the missing persons case I'm working on, yes?" He leaned forward. Melanie tried to find the right English words but could only shake her head. "Entschuldigung Detective, mein Englisch ist...sehr schlecht. Ich habe Angst... die Frau am See gefunden. Tot! Und ich denke... huge schlimm is happening around uns." Her eyes welled with tears. "I see," Hunter nodded gravely, though clearly lost. "If you don't mind my asking, what were you doing out by the lake?" "Photographieren... aber ich sollte nich da sein, es war... gefährlich," Melanie said in a small voice, shivering. Suddenly Hunter's police radio crackled to life. He stood quickly, giving her his card. "I'm going to head this in. But please, come to the station and we'll find a way to talk, alright?" Melanie gave a small nod, and Hunter was already striding out the door. She had so much to tell him. But how could they ever converse to solve this mystery together?
