# Voice Sheet — Scene at the Café --- Hunter: "Excuse me, ma'am. Mind if I sit down for a moment?" Melanie: *(looks up from her camera, startled)* "Oh — hallo. Entschuldigung, ich... kann ich Ihnen helfen?" Hunter: "I'm Detective Hunter, with the county sheriff's office. I'm investigating some disappearances in the area. Were you by any chance near the old mill road last Tuesday evening?" Melanie: *(her face pales; she clutches the camera tighter)* "Die alte Mühle... ja, ja, ich war dort. Ich habe etwas gesehen — etwas Schreckliches. Es war dunkel und da war ein Mann, er hat jemanden in einen Wagen gezogen. Ich habe Fotos gemacht, aber meine Hände haben so gezittert..." Hunter: *(leaning back, blinking)* "I'm sorry — I didn't catch any of that. Do you speak English?" Melanie: *(shaking her head, visibly frustrated)* "Nein, nein... English, nein. Ich spreche nur Deutsch. Aber bitte, Sie müssen mir zuhören — ich habe etwas Wichtiges auf meiner Kamera!" Hunter: "Okay... I'm getting that you don't speak English. That's alright. Uh — camera? You're showing me your camera. Did you take pictures of something?" Melanie: *(nodding vigorously, turning the camera screen toward him)* "Ja! Ja, Kamera! Sehen Sie — hier, dieses Foto. Dieser Mann, er war dort, bei der Straße. Er hat eine Frau... sie hat geschrien. Ich hatte solche Angst, ich bin weggerannt." Hunter: *(squinting at the camera screen, his expression sharpening)* "That's... that's the mill road. And that — is that a person? Who is that? Can you tell me who that is?" Melanie: *(her eyes welling up, voice trembling)* "Ich weiß nicht, wer er ist. Ich bin doch fremd hier, ich kenne niemanden. Aber sein Gesicht — ich sehe es jede Nacht, wenn ich die Augen schließe. Er hat mich bemerkt. Er hat mich gesehen, als ich das Foto gemacht habe. Ich habe solche Angst, dass er mich sucht." Hunter: *(rubbing his jaw, exhaling heavily)* "I can see you're scared. I wish I could understand what you're telling me. This photo, though — this could be important. Really important." Melanie: *(wiping her eyes, pressing a hand to her chest)* "Bitte... bitte helfen Sie mir. Ich bin ganz allein hier. Ich wollte doch nur Landschaften fotografieren, und jetzt... ich weiß nicht, was ich tun soll." Hunter: "Look, I'm going to find someone who speaks — what is that, German? I'm going to find a translator, okay? Trans-la-tor." Melanie: *(staring at him, uncertain)* "Ich... ich verstehe nicht. Aber Sie sehen nett aus. Sie wollen mir helfen, oder? Bitte sagen Sie ja." Hunter: *(pointing at her, then at himself, making a reassuring gesture)* "You — safe. I'm going to help. Help. Okay? Stay here in town, stay where there are people around." Melanie: *(nodding slowly, though still unsure)* "Okay... okay." Hunter: *(his phone buzzes; he answers)* "Hunter here. — Yeah. — Where? — I'm on my way." *(standing up quickly, looking back at Melanie with concern)* "I have to go. Something's come up. But I'll be back — I *will* be back. Don't go anywhere alone." Melanie: *(watching him rise, panic flickering across her face)* "Warten Sie — Sie gehen? Nein, bitte, gehen Sie nicht! Ich habe Ihnen noch nicht alles erzählt — die Fotos, es gibt noch mehr..." Hunter: *(holding up a hand, speaking slowly)* "I'll come back. Back. Here." *(points down at the table, then at his watch)* "Soon." Melanie: *(clutching her camera to her chest, whispering)* "Bald... ich hoffe, Sie kommen bald zurück. Ich warte hier. Bitte vergessen Sie mich nicht." Hunter: *(giving her a firm nod before turning toward the door, muttering to himself)* "I need to find a German speaker in this town... in Alborn, Minnesota. Great." --- *Melanie watches him disappear through the café door, then looks down at the glowing screen of her camera — at the blurred face of a man dragging a figure into the dark — and pulls her jacket tighter around her shoulders.*
