The rain fell hard against the old Victorian mansion windows. Inside, Detective Miller studied the body sprawled on the carpet. Blood pooled beneath the victim's head like dark red ink. A crystal vase lay shattered near the dead man's hand. Someone had struck him from behind with very great force. Miller knelt down, carefully avoiding the blood with practiced precision. "Time of death was approximately midnight," the coroner had stated. The detective noticed muddy footprints leading toward the grand library.
