# Voice Sheet — Café Scene, Alborn, MN --- Hunter: "Excuse me, ma'am? Mind if I sit down for a second?" Selvi: *(looks up from her camera, startled)* "Haan? Kya hua?" Hunter: "I'm Detective Hunter Graves, with the county sheriff's office. I'm looking into some things that've been happening around town. You been here long?" Selvi: *(clutching her camera tightly, eyes wide)* "Mujhe samajh nahi aa raha aap kya keh rahe hain. Maaf kijiye." Hunter: "...Okay. Uh. Do you — do you speak English?" Selvi: *(shaking her head slowly)* "English nahi. Maaf kijiye. Hindi." Hunter: "Hindi. Right. Okay." Selvi: *(pointing at her camera, her hands trembling slightly)* "Maine — maine kuch dekha. Kal raat. Wahan, us gali mein. Kuch bahut galat tha. Ek aadmi — woh kisi ko kheench ke le ja raha tha." Hunter: "Ma'am, I — I'm sorry, I can't understand a word you're saying. But you look shaken up. Are you alright? Are you — okay?" Selvi: *(touching her chest, breathing unsteadily)* "Main theek nahi hoon. Mujhe bahut darr lag raha hai. Woh aadmi... uska chehra... maine photo li thi, lekin mujhe nahi pata kisko dikhaaun." Hunter: "You keep looking at that camera. Did you — did you see something? Take a picture of something?" Selvi: *(nodding vigorously, turning the camera screen toward him)* "Haan! Haan, dekhiye! Yeh dekhiye! Yeh woh aadmi hai!" Hunter: *(leaning in, studying the small screen)* "That's... that's the alley behind the hardware store. And that — who is that? Ma'am, who is this man in the photo?" Selvi: *(frustrated, gesturing)* "Mujhe nahi pata woh kaun tha! Lekin woh kisi ko utha ke le ja raha tha. Ek ladki thi — woh behosh thi ya... mujhe nahi pata." Hunter: "I wish I could understand you. I really do. This photo, though — this is something. Can I — can I see more?" Selvi: *(scrolling through photos on the camera, hands still shaking)* "Yeh dekhiye... yeh... aur yeh. Maine jaldi jaldi li theen. Bahut andhera tha. Darr ke maare haath kaamp rahe the." Hunter: "Three photos. All of them dark, but I can make out a figure. A big guy. Looks like he's carrying — Jesus. Ma'am, you may have just photographed—" Selvi: *(grabbing his arm)* "Aap samajh rahe hain na? Please. Kuch kijiye. Mujhe bahut darr lag raha hai ki woh mujhe bhi dekh lega." Hunter: "Hey, hey — easy. You're safe. I don't know what you're saying, but I can see you're scared. I'm going to help. Okay? Help." Selvi: *(wiping her eyes, nodding)* "Help. Haan. Please... help." Hunter: "Okay. That word you know. Good. I'm going to need this camera, or at least these photos. Can I — may I?" Selvi: *(pulling the camera back protectively)* "Nahi, nahi. Camera mera hai. Lekin... main dikha sakti hoon. Aap photo le lijiye apne phone se." Hunter: "Alright, alright, I won't take it. Let me just — let me get a shot with my phone here..." *(Hunter pulls out his phone and photographs the camera's screen, capturing each of the three images.)* Hunter: "Okay. Good. That's good. Now listen, I'm going to find someone who speaks — what did you say? Hindi? I'll find a translator and come back—" *(Hunter's phone buzzes loudly. He glances down at the screen and his expression hardens.)* Hunter: "Damn it. I have to take this." *(He holds up one finger to Selvi and steps half a turn away.)* Hunter: "Graves here. ...When? ...How long ago? ...I'm on my way." *(He turns back to Selvi, speaking slowly and pointing.)* Hunter: "I have to go. But I'm coming back. Stay here. Stay. Here. Okay?" Selvi: *(nodding, clutching the camera to her chest)* "Aap wapas aaiyega na? Please. Mujhe akela mat chhodiye." Hunter: *(placing a hand briefly on her shoulder)* "I'll be back. I promise." *(He sets a business card on the table, taps it twice with his finger, then turns and strides out of the café. Selvi picks up the card, turns it over in her hands, and stares after him through the window — alone again with her camera and whatever terrible thing it holds.)*
