The rookie pointed to the
man's wrists. Large watch tan line, no watch. Quinn studied the scene. The platform was clean. No takeaway containers, fag ends, needles.
She paced the length of
it.
A single ticket stub caught
her eye. For the wrong line. "Time of death?"
she called to the tech
examining the body. "Eight to twelve hours ago." "Middle of the night. No one comes down here by accident then."
She picked up the stub
. "Or alone." "You think he was lured?"
The rookie sounded skeptical
. "Bit elaborate for a mugging. Why not just roll him in an alley?" "Precisely." Quinn turned a slow circle, considering. "Why here? Why him?"
Her torch glinted off something
metallic by the wall. A small brass compass. The needle spun erratically. She looked up. A sigil marked the tiles. "Fuck." Quinn turned to the rookie. "Get everyone out. Now." "Why? What's going-" "Out! Move!"
She grabbed her phone
. It went straight to voicemail. "Eva, I know it's late but I need you to look up something for me. Call back as soon as you get this." Above ground, Quinn directed the exodus. Officers filed past with evidence bags and kit. The rookie hung back, Casting nervous glances at the stairs. "You too." "But-" "I'm serious. This isn't a normal scene."
She lowered her voice
. "This is Veil shit. Trust me. You don't want any part of it." Reluctantly, he left. Quinn dialed again. "Eva, pick up damn it." A click. Then: "Harlow? What's burning down now?" Quinn exhaled. "I need your expertise. Who would use a Veil compass?" "Depends." Pages rustled in the background. "Could be a Shade trader. Or a human who bought off-market. Why?" "I found one by a body. In an abandoned station."
She described the sigil
. "Mean anything to you?" Keys clacked.
Then a hissed
"Shit." "Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Care to elaborate?" Eva took a steadying breath. "That's a summoning sigil. Looks like your stiff was trying to hitch a ride to the Market." Quinn glanced at the stairs. "But he never made it." "Nope. Burner phone says he didn't want company. Compass says he didn't know the way. Sigil says he had somewhere to be. And that ticket stub..." "Wrong line." "Wrong line," Eva confirmed. "Would be a good accidental tourist cover story for anyone checking. Har, you need to walk away. Right now. Trust me." "I can't." "You have to. Special Branch can-" "Branch can't find their own arse with two hands. Besides, it's too late." A prickle ran up her spine. "I think I'm about to get my invitation." She hung up.
