Detective Clara Marsh stepped out of her car and immediately noticed the front door of Thornfield Manor was wide open. The bitter rain was falling in thick relentless sheets that drummed hard against the old stone walls of the manor. Lord Ashworth had been hosting his annual dinner party that night, and nine invited guests had all supposedly been present. Detective Marsh crouched beside the body and scanned the room, already certain that nothing about this scene was an accident. From somewhere deep within the dim manor, behind one of the many closed and heavy oak doors, a floorboard creaked. The murderer, she suddenly realized with a slow and dawning certainty, was still somewhere inside this sprawling and darkened manor.
