Detective Mara Cole arrived at the crumbling old manor just before midnight with her long dark coat soaked completely through. The heavy front door had been left wide open and was swinging slowly back and forth on its rusted hinges. Inside, the grand hallway stretched before her, lit only by a few flickering candles that cast long and eerie shadows. At the far end of the hallway she could see a body face down upon the cold marble floor below. Mara approached slowly, her right hand reaching instinctively for the small service pistol she always kept holstered at her hip. The victim was an older man dressed in an expensive black suit, his silver hair fanned around his pale face. A single red rose had been carefully placed in his right hand, its sharp thorns drawing thin lines of blood. Mara crouched down beside him and studied the grim scene with the cold certainty that nothing about this was accidental. Someone had wanted this man dead, and that same someone had wanted the entire world to know about it too. She stood slowly, reached for her phone, and with one deep breath called it in, already dreading what lay ahead.
