You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The standing stones rose from the bracken like teeth, four of them, each a weathered oak grown into shapes no living tree should hold. Aurora pressed her palm against the nearest one. The bark gave under her fingers, warm and pliant, more flesh than wood. "It breathes," she said. "Everything here breathes." Nyx slid alongside her, their silhouette thinning where the light struck them, then gathering thick again in the shade between two stones. "That's what should worry you." Beyond the boundary, the air changed. Aurora felt it cross her skin like stepping from a cold room into one banked with fire. The October chill of Richmond Park vanished behind them. Ahead, wildflowers spilled across the clearing in colours she had no names for — petals that shaded from violet into something that hurt to look at, blossoms that turned their faces to follow her movement rather than the sun. Eva caught her sleeve. "Rory. The path behind us." She turned. The gap between the stones still showed the ordinary woodland they'd left, the grey light and the wet leaves. But it had shrunk, narrowed to a slit no wider than a doorway, and the trees on the far side stood too still, as though painted. "It's fine," Aurora said. "Isolde told me time runs strange in here. We keep moving, we keep together." "You trust a woman who can't give a straight answer." "I trust that she can't lie to me." Aurora touched the dagger at her hip, the moonsilver cold even through its sheath. Isolde's gift. "That'll have to do." They went deeper. The grass underfoot made no sound, though Aurora watched her own boots crush it flat. When she looked back she saw her footprints filling in, blades rising one by one as if the meadow erased her passage. Nyx left nothing at all, but then Nyx never did. Eva's prints stayed a moment longer, then those too smoothed away. A stream cut across their path, and the water ran uphill. Aurora crouched at its edge. The current climbed a gentle slope toward a stand of birches, silver-trunked, their leaves chiming faintly as the breeze moved through — actual chiming, a sound like small glass bells, high and clean. "Don't drink it," Nyx said. "Whatever you do." "I wasn't going to." "People always think they weren't going to." She dipped two fingers in instead. The water was thick, almost oily, and it clung to her skin in beads that caught the light and held it, glowing faint after she'd lifted her hand free. She wiped it on her jeans. The glow faded slow. Eva had wandered ahead toward the birches, drawn by the bell-sound. "Rory, come look at this." The trees grew in a ring, and inside the ring the ground dropped into a hollow carpeted with moss so deep their feet sank to the ankle. Mushrooms ringed the edge — pale, tall as a hand, glowing the soft blue of a gas flame. And in the centre of the hollow lay bones. Not human. Too long in the limb, the skull narrow and crested, the ribcage a cathedral of curved white. Flowers grew up through the eye sockets and out between the ribs, and from the bones came the faintest hum, a vibration Aurora felt in her teeth more than heard. "What was it?" Eva whispered. "Something old." Nyx had gone still, their violet eyes fixed on the skull. "Older than the grove, maybe. The Fae don't bury their dead. They plant them." Aurora's pendant stirred against her sternum. She drew it out — the Heartstone, deep crimson, and it pulsed against her palm, a slow heartbeat warmth. It had never done that here before. It only woke near the tears in the Veil. "Nyx." She held it up. The crimson glow brightened, dimmed, brightened, keeping time with something she couldn't see. "It's reacting." The Shade drifted closer, and where their shadow fell across the stone the warmth seemed to deepen. "There's a thin place near. The Veil wears through where old power pools." A pause. "Belphegor's mark is on this stone. You know that?" "You've told me." "I'm telling you again, because we're standing in a Fae sanctuary and you're carrying gluttony's gift around your neck like a holiday souvenir." Their voice dropped, the whisper thinning to almost nothing. "Things here will smell it. Some of them remember Dymas. Not fondly." Aurora tucked the pendant away. The warmth pressed through her shirt, insistent now. Eva had crouched at the rim of the bone-hollow, reaching toward one of the blue mushrooms. "These are beautiful. Do you think—" "Don't," Aurora and Nyx said together. Eva froze, hand inches from the cap. As they watched, the mushroom turned. Not the breeze — it pivoted on its stalk, the gills along its underside flaring open like a mouth drawing breath, and the blue glow swelled hungry-bright. Eva yanked her hand back and stumbled away from the ring. "Okay," she breathed. "Okay. Noted. Nothing in the murder garden is friendly." The chiming of the birches had stopped. Aurora noticed it the way you notice a clock you'd stopped hearing — the absence louder than the sound. The whole grove had gone quiet, the flowers gone still, the uphill stream slowing to a glassy stop. Then, from somewhere past the birches, a voice threaded through the trees. It came in riddles, lilting, every syllable shaped like the start of a song. "Three crossed my stones who were not asked, and one of them wears a borrowed heart." Aurora's hand found the dagger again. Beside her, Nyx solidified, edges hardening to something almost like a man, six foot of darkness drawn up between her and the trees. "Isolde," Aurora called. "We came to talk. You knew we would." The wildflowers turned, all of them at once, faces swivelling toward a gap in the birches where the light bent wrong — a shimmer, a distortion, a tall and slender shape stepping out of nothing. "I knew," said the Seer, "that someone would come bleeding gluttony's perfume through my garden. I did not know it would be the delivery girl." Pale lavender eyes moved over the three of them, lingering on Aurora's chest where the pendant warmed. "Come away from the bones, child. They're listening. And what they hear, the Prince hears too."
