Frederick stared. “How did you do that?” “By asking rather than commanding.” The man offered a scarred hand. “Sir Roland. I oversee the squires here.” Frederick clasped it, trying not to wince at the knight’s powerful grip. Sir Roland glanced toward the darkening towers. “You have arrived at a troubled hour, Frederick. Stable your horse and meet me in the great hall. Beside a stack of hay bales stood a knight with a crooked grin, polishing mud from a battered shield. “So this is the famous new squire,” he said. “I expected someone taller.” Frederick slid from Thunder’s saddle. “And I expected Sir Roland to be more courteous.” The knight raised an eyebrow, then laughed even louder. “Good! At least you brought courage with you.” He clapped Frederick on the shoulder hard enough to stagger him. “Welcome, lad. Get your horse settled, find yourself some supper, and report to the training yard at sunrise.” Frederick glanced at the dented shield. Deep across its face were three long gouges, as though made by enormous claws. Sir Roland noticed his gaze, and his smile vanished. “We will speak of that tomorrow.” </nc-section>
