You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The oak stones stood taller than Rory expected — three of them, grey and lichen-crusted, leaning inward like old men sharing a secret. Beyond them the November bracken simply stopped. One step of dead brown, and then green. "That's not right," Rory said. "Define right." Nyx flowed past her, a smear of dark against the grass that gathered itself upright between the stones. Their violet eyes caught the light and held it. "You're standing at a seam in the world. Right stopped applying about four feet back." Isolde had already crossed. She stood in the long grass with her hands loose at her sides, silver hair lifting though Rory felt no wind at all. "Come," Isolde said. "The Grove tolerates guests. It does not wait for them." Rory looked down at her boots. Behind her, Richmond Park went on being Richmond Park — the far-off thump of a football, a woman shouting at a spaniel, the grey plate of the sky pressing down. Ahead, sunlight fell in a way that had nothing to do with the sky above it. She stepped through. The cold went out of her like water out of a tipped glass. It wasn't warmth exactly, more the absence of everything that had been gnawing at her fingers since the bus stop. The air tasted green. Not the wet-mud green of English woodland but something sharper, sweeter, like biting the stem of a flower. She breathed in and her lungs felt bigger than they'd been a moment ago. "Oh," she said. "Articulate." Nyx drifted at her shoulder. "Shut up." She turned in a slow circle. The clearing shouldn't have fit. She'd walked the perimeter of those stones — maybe twenty feet across, thirty at the outside. Inside, the grass ran out and out, dipping into a shallow bowl of a valley she had absolutely not seen from the other side, and the far edge was a wall of trees so tall their crowns dissolved into haze. Wildflowers grew everywhere in impossible combination. Bluebells beside sunflowers. Snowdrops shouldering up through a mat of blackberry blossom, and the blackberries already fruiting beside them, fat and dark. Spring and high summer and autumn all crowded into the same square yard, arguing. "They don't know what month it is," Rory said. "There isn't one." Isolde was walking, and Rory noticed — because she'd been told to notice, because Nyx had warned her in the bar last night with something like glee — that the grass didn't bend behind her. It closed over where she'd been like water. "The Grove is a held breath. Nothing in it has ever exhaled." "That's a lovely non-answer." "It is the only kind I have." They went down into the valley. The grass came to Rory's thigh and dragged at her jeans, releasing little clouds of seed that hung in the air behind her rather than falling. She kept turning to look at them. They were still there, twenty paces on, a glittering track of her own passage suspended at knee height. Under her shirt, the Heartstone lay cool and quiet against her sternum. She'd got used to it warming near the rifts, that low animal pulse like something asleep. Here it was dead as a pebble. She wasn't sure whether that comforted her or not. Sound arrived in pieces. Water first — a stream running somewhere left, close enough that she should have seen it. She didn't. Then birds, though the calls were wrong, too long, too musical, phrases that repeated with variations like something practising. And under all of it, so low she felt it in her teeth more than heard it, a single sustained note. The kind of hum a cathedral makes when someone's shut the organ off and the air hasn't finished. "Do you hear that?" "I hear everything," Nyx said. "It's the boundary. Two realms pressed against each other and neither willing to give ground. That noise is the friction." A pause. "Aldric found it beautiful. I find it loud." Rory glanced at them. Nyx never used that name. She let it go. At the bottom of the valley the stream finally showed itself, and it was running uphill. She stopped dead. Water, clear as gin, sliding over pale stones in a channel maybe two feet wide, and moving without any doubt at all from the low ground up the slope towards the treeline. Little standing waves stacked behind the pebbles on the downstream side. Which was the up side. Rory crouched and put her hand in it. Cold. Ordinary, brilliant cold, the kind that aches. She pulled her fingers out and they were dry. "Isolde." "Yes." "Water's going the wrong way." "Water goes where it is going." The seer had stopped beside a stand of foxgloves taller than she was, purple bells the size of Rory's fist. "You are asking me to explain. I cannot explain a thing I did not build. I can only tell you what it does." "Fine. What does it do?" "It drinks." Isolde reached up and cupped one of the bells without picking it. "Everything here drinks. From the earth, from the light, from you." Rory stood up rather quickly. "From me." "You have been here — " Isolde tilted her head, listening for something. " — a quarter of an hour. Outside, the sun has moved. How far, I could not promise. That is the drinking. The Grove takes time. It has no use for anything else you carry." "Right." Rory wiped her hand down her jeans, though it was dry. "Right. So we're on a clock." "You are always on a clock. Here you simply cannot read it." They followed the stream uphill. Rory made herself stop counting the impossibilities after the sixth — a stag standing motionless in the middle distance whose antlers held small white flowers growing out of the bone; a stone bench sunk into the turf, its seat worn hollow by centuries of sitting, in a clearing where no one had ever come; the way her own shadow lay in a different direction from Nyx's, and both were wrong for the light. The trees, when they reached them, were the thing that stopped her breath properly. Oaks. She knew oaks. Her mother had made her learn leaves as a child, dragging her round Bute Park with a laminated chart. These were oaks the way a whale is a fish — the same shape, the wrong order of magnitude. The nearest trunk was wider than her parents' house. Its bark had cracked into plates the size of doors, and in the crevices between them grew moss, ferns, a whole hanging garden thirty feet up, and something that glinted. "Nyx. Up there. Is that glass?" Nyx unspooled, poured up the trunk as a long ribbon of dark, and reformed on a shelf of bark. "Bottles," they called down. "Dozens. Corked. Someone left offerings." "Left them when?" "Ask the moss." Rory laid her palm flat on the bark. It was warm. Not sun-warm — blood-warm, and beneath it, faint and enormous and unmistakably slow, something moved. A single beat, then a long, long wait, then another. She took her hand back and looked at it. "Isolde," she said carefully, "the tree's got a pulse." "Yes," said Isolde. "Do not tell it yours."
