# Voice Sheet — Scene 12: "The Photograph" **Location:** Bramble & Bean Café, Main Street, Alborn, MN --- **Hunter:** "Ma'am? Excuse me. Hunter Vaas, county sheriff's office. Mind if I ask you a couple questions?" **Selvi:** *(startled, pulling the camera against her chest)* "मुझे... मुझे माफ़ कीजिए, मैं समझ नहीं पा रही हूँ।" **Hunter:** "...Okay. That's — okay. Do you speak any English at all?" **Selvi:** "अंग्रेज़ी? नहीं, बहुत कम... बिल्कुल नहीं। मैं हिंदी बोलती हूँ।" **Hunter:** "Hindi. Right." *(sits down across from her, slowly)* "Look, there was an incident. Thursday night. Out by the orchard road — the old Perrault place. You were out there. Bhatt over in Duluth, his wife's people are from — doesn't matter. Point is, I'll be back. You stay in town." **Selvi:** "आप वापस आएंगे?" **Hunter:** *(phone buzzing)* "Hold on." *(answering)* "Vaas. — Yeah. — Where? — No, don't move anything, I'm ten minutes out." *(hangs up, stands, chair scraping)* **Selvi:** *(rising halfway)* "क्या हुआ? कुछ हुआ है?" **Hunter:** "I gotta go. I'm sorry — I gotta go." *(pulls a card from his jacket, sets it down, taps it)* "Me. Call me. Tomorrow, this café, nine o'clock." *(holds up nine fingers, points at the table, at himself)* "Nine. Here. Okay?" **Selvi:** *(taking the card, reading it slowly)* "नौ बजे। यहाँ।" *(nodding)* "ठीक है। मैं आऊँगी।" **Hunter:** "Good. And ma'am — " *(pauses at the door)* "Stay off the orchard road." **Selvi:** *(after he's gone, to herself, very softly)* "...मुझे कुछ समझ नहीं आया। लेकिन मुझे लगता है आपने समझ लिया।" --- **Director's note:** Selvi's fear should read clearly through cadence and hands, not translation — the audience should feel the gap before they understand it. Hunter's frustration is with himself, never with her.
