You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The wildflowers were the first wrong thing. Rory noticed them before she noticed anything else, because it was the second week of November and the ground under the oaks in Richmond Park had been a slurry of mud and dead bracken twenty steps behind her. Now she was walking through knee-high cornflowers and foxglove and something violet-white she had no name for, and the air smelled like the first day of a summer she'd never actually lived. "Stop," she said. Nyx stopped. Or rather, the darkness beside her stopped moving — it was hard to tell with them, in this light, whether they were walking or simply arriving at successive places. Their form had gone thin and vertical, a smear of night against the brightness, and their violet eyes had narrowed to two hairline slits. "You feel it too," Nyx said. Their voice came from somewhere just behind her left ear, though the shape of them was clearly a metre off. It always did that. She'd stopped flinching about a month ago. "I feel like I've walked into a photograph." She turned in a slow circle. "Where's the road?" Behind them, where the A road should have been running its low steady drone through the trees, there was nothing. Not silence exactly — the grove had its own sounds, an unhurried chorus of insects and shifting leaves and something that might have been water — but the particular grey hum of London had been amputated. Cleanly. No fade, no distance. Just gone. "The boundary," Nyx said. "You crossed it. There." They gestured, and Rory followed the motion to the two oaks she'd walked between without thinking, because they'd looked like oaks. They still looked like oaks. But now she could see that the trunks weren't trunks. They were stones — grey, lichen-scabbed, taller than a man — and the oaks had grown around them the way a scar grows around glass, bark folded and healed over stone until the two were one thing. The stones' surfaces were carved with lines she couldn't hold in her eye. Every time she looked directly at one it became a different line. "How long have those been there?" "Longer than me." Nyx sounded almost respectful, which unsettled her more than anything. "Longer than the language you would ask the question in." The Heartstone shifted against her sternum. Not the warm pulse it gave near a rift — nothing so obvious — but a change in weight, as though the crimson stone had grown briefly heavier and then apologised for it. She pressed her palm flat over it through her jacket. Old habit. The pendant had never explained itself and she'd stopped expecting it to. They went deeper. The grass was the wrong height everywhere, tall in patches and cropped to velvet in others, and no path existed until she looked for one, and then it was there, and she was fairly certain it hadn't been. She tested this twice. Both times the path obliged. The third time she deliberately looked away from where she wanted to go, and the path stayed exactly where she'd left it, and she decided that was worse. "Don't take anything," Nyx said. "I wasn't going to take anything." "You will want to. There will be fruit. There will be water and you will be thirsty in ways you have not been thirsty before." The shadow flowed over a fallen log rather than around it. "Fae hospitality is a contract. Eat and you have signed." "Right." Rory's mouth had gone dry the instant they said it, which she recognised as suggestion and resented anyway. "Anything else? Any other lovely details you've been sitting on?" "Time." Nyx's slits of eyes turned toward her. "Watch the light." She watched the light. And that was when the wonder got past her guard, because the light in the grove was coming from nowhere. There was no sun. There was brightness — golden, thick as syrup, the specific quality of six o'clock on a July evening — but she checked the sky and the sky was a pale nacreous white with no disc in it at all, and the shadows on the ground pointed in four directions at once. Her own shadow lay east. The foxgloves cast theirs north. A stand of birches beyond had shadows going both ways, split down their trunks like a badly printed photograph. "Oh," she said. "Yes." "That's —" She laughed, once, involuntarily. "That's genuinely beautiful." "It is a seam." Nyx had gone still. "You are standing in a place that is two places. The light is arguing about which." They walked on. A stream crossed their path, running clear over white stones, and Rory watched it with careful, thirsty detachment. Small pale fish moved in it, or something like fish; they had no eyes she could see and they swam in perfect synchrony, all turning at once, a single organism of forty parts. When her shadow fell across the water they scattered — not away from her, but upward, breaking the surface in a spray of silver that hung in the air a half-second longer than water should before falling back. Further in, she found the tree. It stood alone in a clearing within the clearing, an apple tree so heavy with fruit that its lower branches lay along the ground. The apples were the deep bruised crimson of the Heartstone. The air around it was thick with a smell she felt in her jaw. Under the tree the grass had been pressed flat in a wide ring, as though something enormous slept there regularly. Rory looked at the flattened ring for a long moment. "Nyx." "I see it." "Is there something living here besides her?" A pause. The shadow-shape narrowed further, until Nyx was little more than a line, and their eyes dimmed as if to avoid being seen. "There are things living here that would not describe themselves as living." "Fantastic." She took a step back from the ring. "That's a proper answer, that is. Very actionable." "You asked me for anything else." "I did." Her pulse was doing something unhelpful. She made herself breathe, made herself look at the tree as a thing rather than a threat, and noticed something that steadied her: there were no fallen apples. Not one. The grass beneath was flat and clean and the fruit hung on and on, and whatever ate here ate everything. She kept walking, and she did not touch the tree, and she was proud of that in a small ridiculous way. The mist came up in the next hollow, and with it the sound of a bell — one note, low, close enough that she turned expecting a church tower and found only white air and the suggestion of standing stones. The mist beaded cold on her face. Under her jacket the Heartstone had gone entirely inert, a lump of nothing, and she found she missed its weight the way you miss a hand you'd been holding. Then the mist thinned, and there were footprints in the wet grass ahead of them. Hers. Two sets of hers, side by side, both facing the direction she'd come from, both fresh — and she had definitely not walked this way twice. Rory stood very still and looked at them for a while. "Nyx," she said quietly. "When we leave here. How long will it have been out there?" The whisper came from directly behind her, though the shadow was somewhere ahead in the mist. "That," Nyx said, "depends on how well you ask her." Beyond the hollow, past the last of the white air, something moved between the trees with silver in its hair, and left no mark at all on the ground where it walked.
