You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The oaks weren't oaks. Rory understood that the moment she passed between them, though she couldn't have said how. From twenty feet back they'd looked like any of the other trees in Richmond Park — hoary, arthritic things, bark like elephant hide, the sort of trunk you'd lean a bicycle against. But up close the wood was too smooth, too grey, and there was a suggestion of vertical fluting, of carving worn down by centuries of rain. Not trees pretending to be stones. Stones that had been dreaming, a long time, of being trees. "Don't touch them," Nyx said. Their voice came from behind her left shoulder, which was a problem, because a moment ago it had come from her right. Rory had learned to stop tracking it. Nyx moved through a November afternoon the way ink moves through water, and if you tried to follow the ink you only ended up dizzy. "I wasn't going to." "You were reaching." She dropped her hand. She had been reaching. Her fingers had a mind of their own out here. "Why not?" said Yu-Fei, three paces back, hugging her thermos to her chest like a talisman. She'd insisted on coming. She'd made a great deal of noise about how she wasn't letting Rory walk into a Fae anything alone, and then she'd packed a thermos of jasmine tea and two foil-wrapped bao, because Yu-Fei Cheung did not believe in confronting the supernatural on an empty stomach. "What happens?" "Nothing," said Nyx. "Nothing at all happens. For about a hundred years." Yu-Fei tucked her hands into her sleeves. Rory stepped through. The temperature changed first, and it changed wrong — not the clean drop of stepping into shade but a sideways slide, as though the air had been swapped out for other air while she blinked. November went out of it. The wet-newspaper smell of the park, the distant thud of a football, the wheeze of the A308 beyond the trees: all of it thinned to nothing, like a radio losing a station. In its place came a hum so low she felt it in her back teeth, and the smell of green. Not grass. Green. If someone had distilled the concept and bottled it. "Oh," said Yu-Fei, coming through behind her. The clearing was maybe forty yards across, and it was full of light with no source. The sky above was a soft, pearled nothing — not overcast, not clear, just an absence politely agreeing to be a sky. And the flowers. Rory had grown up with her mother's garden in Cardiff, so she knew what a flower was supposed to do. It was supposed to have a season. It was supposed to know its neighbours. Here, bluebells stood shoulder to shoulder with September asters, and foxgloves that should have been dead six weeks ago pushed up between snowdrops, and there were things she had no name for at all: a low creeping vine with blossoms like tiny glass bells, and a spray of six-petalled something that was black at the edges and shaded to a violent, arterial red at the throat. Everything blooming at once. Everything blooming as though it had never once been told to stop. She crouched and put her palm flat against the turf. It was warm. Not sun-warm. Warm the way a sleeping animal is warm. "Rory." Yu-Fei's voice had gone very small. "Look at the — look." She looked where Yu-Fei was pointing, at the grass behind them, at the double track of their own footprints pressed into the wildflowers. Two sets. Hers, size six, Yu-Fei's, size four. Nyx left nothing at all, but Nyx wouldn't; Nyx was six foot two of ambulatory dusk and weighed roughly as much as a rumour. The problem was that the footprints were filling in. Not springing back. Filling. As she watched, a crushed bluebell straightened, unbruised. A snapped stem knitted. The impression of her own boot heel smoothed away like a thumbprint wiped from steam, and within four heartbeats there was no evidence at all that anyone had ever walked here. "It's tidying up after us," Rory said. "That's not tidying." Yu-Fei's knuckles were white on the thermos. "That's forgetting us." Rory found she had nothing to say to that, so she stood, and brushed her hands on her jeans, and started walking deeper in. The hum grew as they went. It wasn't sound, exactly — it was more like the sensation of a held note in a stone church, when the organ has stopped but the building hasn't finished thinking about it. Twice she thought she heard laughter, high and quick and gone. Once, a phrase of music with no instrument attached to it, three notes rising, and Yu-Fei's head snapped round so fast she nearly dropped her tea. "Did you—" "Yes." "It sounded like my grandmother." "Don't answer it," Nyx said. They had gone almost entirely incorporeal in this light, a smear of not-quite-there flowing across the flowers like the shadow of a bird. Only the eyes stayed constant: two soft coals of violet, weirdly gentle. "Whatever you hear here, whoever it sounds like — do not answer it. The grove is a polite host. But it keeps what is given freely." "You've been here before," Rory said. A pause. "I have been near here before. Four hundred years ago it was a hollow in a wood and there were wolves in England." The whisper thinned, and for a moment Rory heard something under it that wasn't a whisper at all. Something with the shape of a man's voice. "I did not go in. I was in a hurry, that night. I was very sure of a great many things." She glanced at the shadow. It offered nothing else. The pendant chose that moment to go cold. It had been resting between her collarbones since May — the Heartstone, crimson, thumbnail-sized, warm on its silver chain the way a swallowed mouthful of tea is warm. She'd got used to it. She'd got used to it going hot and urgent near the tunnels beneath Farringdon, near the wet brick arch that stank of sulphur and burnt sugar and led somewhere with an amber sky. She had never once, in six months, felt it go cold. She stopped walking. "Rory?" "It's — " She pulled it out of her collar. The faint inner glow had guttered down to a coal-red ember, sullen, like something sulking. "It doesn't like it here." "Of course it doesn't," said a voice from the middle of the clearing. "It was made in Dymas. Belphegor's kitchens sweat out such trinkets between courses. Poor thing. It has spent its whole life being told that warmth is love." Rory turned. There was a woman standing among the foxgloves where, three seconds ago, there had been no woman. Silver hair to her waist, unbound, moving slightly in air that was not moving. A face that Rory's eye kept trying to age and kept failing — twenty, then fifty, then something with no number on it — and eyes the pale washed lavender of the inside of a shell. She had walked out of the treeline to reach them. Rory could see the whole line of her approach. There were no footprints. Not filling in. Simply none, and never had been. "Isolde Varga," Rory said. "Aurora Carter." The Seer inclined her head. "You brought a shadow and a cook." "I brought friends." "Yes." Isolde smiled, and it was not unkind, and it was not kind either. "That is the same thing, said hopefully." She turned, and the flowers she should have crushed bent away from her hem of their own accord, opening a path. "Come. There is an hour left before the sun sets on the other side of those stones, or there is a Tuesday in March. It depends rather on how long you take to ask your question." Yu-Fei made a strangled noise. "March?" "Possibly February." Isolde was already walking. "I did say I cannot lie. I did not say I would be precise." Rory tucked the cold pendant back against her skin, felt the Fae blade's chill through the canvas of her jacket where it hung at her hip — moonsilver, always cold, the one cold thing in the world she trusted — and followed her in.
