You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The oaks were the first thing that felt wrong. Rory noticed it about twenty metres from the treeline, where the ordinary bracken of Richmond Park gave way to something coarser, silvered, springy underfoot like moss grown over stone. Ahead of her, four trunks stood in a rough square — massive, blackened at the base, their crowns lopped off by lightning or age or something less explicable. They weren't trees anymore. They were posts. Markers. Standing stones that had once been living wood and hadn't quite committed to being dead. "Don't touch them," Nyx said. Their voice came from her left, where there was no one standing. Rory had mostly stopped flinching at that. Mostly. "I wasn't going to touch them." "You were looking at them the way people look at things before they touch them." "That's not a real thing people do." "It is exactly a real thing people do." The shadow beside her thickened, pooled, and rose into a silhouette some six inches taller than the surrounding dark, its edges wavering like a flag in slow wind. Two violet points of light regarded her with what she'd learned to read as amusement. "I've been watching mortals for four hundred years. You are all remarkably consistent about doors." Behind them, Eva made a small strangled sound. "Sorry. Sorry. It's just — does he always do that? The unfolding thing?" "They," Rory said. "And yes." "Right. They. Sorry." Eva had her arms crossed tight over her jacket, her breath ghosting in the December air, and she was doing an admirable job of not running back towards the car park. "It's just very Tim Burton and I wasn't prepared." Rory pressed her hand flat against her sternum, where the Heartstone lay under two jumpers and a coat. It had been warm all the way from Kingston — not the pulse it gave near a rift, not that awful hot heartbeat, but a steady low warmth, like a mug of tea held against the ribs. Reassurance or warning. She'd never worked out which the thing meant by it. "Once we're through," she said, "stay close. And don't eat anything. Don't drink anything. Don't accept anything, don't promise anything, don't thank anyone." "You've said." "I'm saying again." Nyx flowed between the two eastern oaks and stopped, waiting, half in the world and half not. "It won't hurt. It will only feel like it does." That was the last thing said on the outside. Rory stepped through and the cold went out of her like a held note released. It wasn't warmth exactly. It was the absence of the argument between her skin and the air — as though her body had been braced against December for weeks and someone had simply switched December off. Her lungs pulled in something that tasted green. Not the green of grass; the green of a bitten stem, of crushed leaf, sweet and bitter and faintly metallic at the back of the throat. She opened her eyes onto a clearing that had no business existing. Wildflowers. That was the first impossible thing — a whole meadow of them, knee-high, and not one species doing what it should. Bluebells in December, and beside them poppies, and beside those something like a foxglove but wrong in the throat, its bells trembling faintly though there was no wind. Cow parsley taller than she was. And running in threads between all of it, a low white flower she didn't recognise at all, that turned as she passed the way sunflowers turn towards the sun. "They're following me," she said. "They're following your heat," Nyx said. "Or your intent. Or something. Fae flora is not always polite about categories." The light had no source. That was the second impossible thing, and the one that unsettled her most, because it was a smaller wrongness and therefore harder to argue with. The clearing was lit — softly, generously, gold at the edges — and there was a sky above, deep and dusk-blue and full of a slow drift of stars, and the stars were not any stars she'd ever seen. No Orion. No Plough. Just a wide unfamiliar spill of them, some of them large enough to have edges. Eva came through behind her with a gasp that turned halfway into a laugh, and then stopped making any noise at all. "Oh," she said, eventually. "Oh, Rory." "I know." "You said it was a clearing." "It is a clearing." "You said clearing like you meant a gap in some trees." Eva turned slowly on the spot, her hair lifting slightly, her whole face gone open and unguarded in a way Rory hadn't seen since they were fifteen. "This is — Rory, there's no wind and everything's moving." There was that too. Rory had been trying not to look at it directly. The grass stirred in patterns like something breathing under it. Not gusts — currents. Long spiral eddies that crossed the meadow and doubled back. "Don't step where the grass swirls," Nyx said. "You couldn't have mentioned that thirty seconds ago?" "You hadn't stepped yet." They walked. That was the strangest part, later, when she tried to describe it — how quickly a place like that became a place you walked through. The meadow sloped gently down towards a stand of trees that weren't oaks and weren't willows and had bark like poured pewter, and as they went the sounds arrived one by one, as though the grove were introducing itself in a considered order. Water first: a stream somewhere off to the right, but the note of it wrong, too many tones, as if it fell through bells. Then birdsong, high and looping, from birds that never once showed themselves. Then, faint under everything, a hum. Low. Constant. Rory felt it in the small bones of her feet before she heard it, and when she did hear it she recognised it with a lurch — it was the same note the Heartstone made when it woke. "Nyx." She kept her voice level. "Is there a rift here?" "There is a boundary here. It is not the same thing." The Shade had gone thin, almost transparent, drifting along the ground beside her like spilled ink. "This is not Earth and not the Courts. It sits in the seam. That's why the Veil hums — you're standing inside a fold in it." "That's not comforting." "It wasn't offered as comfort." Eva had stopped. She was crouched at the base of one of the pewter trees, and when Rory reached her she saw why: an apple, palm-sized, and so red it seemed to be a hole in the world where red got in. It sat in the grass, perfect, unblemished, dewed. "I'm not going to," Eva said quickly. "I'm not. I just — I can taste it. Rory, I can taste it from here and I've never tasted anything like it." Rory took her elbow and pulled her up, firm, the way she'd have pulled a child from a road. "Then we walk faster." They walked faster. And that was when Rory understood the other thing that had been bothering her, the low itch at the base of her skull since they'd crossed the oaks. She stopped, turned, and looked back at the line of their passage through the meadow. Two trails of bent grass. Hers. Eva's. Nothing else. And ahead of them, coming down from the trees to meet them, silver hair to her waist and bare feet in the wet flowers, walked a woman who left the grass entirely undisturbed — no crush, no gleam of dew displaced, nothing at all, as though she were being projected onto the meadow rather than standing in it. Isolde Varga stopped six feet away and tilted her head, and her eyes were the colour of the inside of a shell. "Three shadows," she said, "and only two of you cast one. You've come a long way to ask a question you already carry the answer to, Aurora Carter. It's rather heavy. I'm surprised your neck hasn't broken." The Heartstone gave one hard pulse against Rory's chest, like something turning over in its sleep. Rory swallowed the green-tasting air and made herself smile. "Then help me put it down," she said.
