You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

Two people who parted on complicated terms are forced together again when one shows up unannounced at the other's flat. There's history between them — attraction, hurt, and things left unsaid. The first deadbolt stuck, the way it always did. Rory worked it with the heel of her hand, cursing under her breath, and by the time she got to the third one she'd decided that if it was the delivery boy from downstairs with someone else's saag paneer again, she was going to say something regrettable. It wasn't the delivery boy. Lucien Moreau stood on the landing with rain darkening the shoulders of his charcoal suit, hat in one hand, cane in the other, looking exactly like a man who had never once in his life been caught out in weather he hadn't anticipated. Water beaded along the ivory handle. Behind him the stairwell light buzzed and flickered, and for one flat second Rory forgot how to make her mouth work. "Hello, Aurora." "No," she said, and shut the door. She got the top deadbolt thrown before he spoke again, unhurried, through two inches of warped Victorian pine. "It is very cold out here." "You're half demon. Isn't that supposed to help?" "A common misconception. My father's people run hot. I inherited my mother's circulation and her taste in wine, and neither has ever done me any good." A pause. "Also, I am bleeding somewhat." Rory pressed her forehead against the door. Downstairs someone slammed a walk-in freezer and the whole building shuddered with it, the smell of cumin and hot oil rising up through the floorboards the way it did every night at half seven, the smell she'd stopped noticing eleven months ago and noticed now, viciously, because her senses had all come screaming online at the sound of his voice. "How much is somewhat?" "Enough that I would rather not discuss it in a stairwell." She undid the locks. All three, one after another, hating herself in ascending order. He came in dripping. Ptolemy took one look from the top of the bookcase, decided the situation was beneath his notice, and went back to sleep. Lucien set his hat on the only clear six inches of the kitchen counter and turned, and in the low yellow light of Eva's flat she saw it properly — the dark shine down his left side, coat to hip, and the careful way he held his arm against his ribs. "Sit," she said. "I am ruining the chair." "Everything in this flat has been ruined by something. Sit." He sat. She dug the first-aid kit out from under a stack of Eva's Sumerian photocopies, filled the kettle out of pure Welsh reflex, and knelt in front of him on the rug with the box open in her lap. Up close he smelled of rain and cedar and, faintly, of iron. "Coat off." "You are going to have to help me with that." She helped him with that. It took longer than it should have, and neither of them said anything during it, and when she peeled the wet wool away from his shirt she felt the flinch go through him — a small thing, controlled almost out of existence, but she'd spent four months learning the vocabulary of his silences and she read it anyway. "Shirt," she said. "Aurora—" "Lucien. Shirt." He undid the buttons himself, one-handed, with the maddening precision he brought to everything, and she looked at the wound and forgot to be angry for a full thirty seconds. Four furrows, raked below the ribs, the edges of them a colour that no human wound had any business being. "What did that?" "Something with an opinion about my presence in Bermondsey." "That's not an answer." "It is the answer I have." He watched her open the antiseptic. "You could have let me freeze." "I thought about it." She soaked the gauze. "This is going to hurt." "Yes," he said, and then hissed through his teeth when she pressed it in, and his knee came up against her shoulder and stayed there, warm through the wet fabric, and she thought: *don't*. She worked in silence. Cleaned, packed, taped. His breathing steadied above her, slow and deliberate, and she was aware of every inch of the space between them and of the eleven months that had grown in it like something with roots. "Eva's away," she said, because the silence had become unbearable. "Cairo. Some symposium. I'm feeding the cat." "I know." Her hands went still. "You know." "I have known where you were since March, Aurora." The tape strip tore crooked. She flattened it down anyway. "March." "You left the bar. You changed the name on the delivery rota at the Golden Empress to Laila, which was clever, and you stopped using the phone I gave you, which was cleverer." Something moved through his voice, thin as a wire. "I did not come." "No." "You asked me not to." "I asked you not to come *that night*." She sat back on her heels and looked up at him, and God, it was worse from this angle, the amber eye and the black one and the water still running out of his hair down the side of his throat. "One night, Lucien. I said *don't follow me tonight, I can't do this tonight*, and you took it as a — a contract. You took it as terms." "You were very clear." "I was *bleeding* and I was *terrified* and you had just told me what you'd traded to get me out of that house, and I needed six hours to be a person about it—" Her voice cracked. She hated it. She kept going. "And instead I got eleven months. Eleven months of thinking you'd decided I wasn't worth the invoice." "That," he said quietly, "is not what I decided." "Then what?" He was silent long enough that she heard the kettle click off in the kitchen. "I decided," he said, "that everyone who has ever wanted something from me has ended up paying for it. My mother. Silas. A great many people whose names I no longer say out loud." He looked at his own hands, resting open on his thighs, and there was nothing smooth about his face now at all. "You asked me for one night alone. It was the first thing you had ever asked me for that I could actually give. So I gave it. And then I gave you a second night, and a week, and then it had been three months and it had stopped being a gift and started being a — " a small, disgusted sound, entirely French — "*lâcheté*. Cowardice. It is easier to be noble than to be told no." Rory's throat ached. "You could have knocked." "I am aware. I am knocking now." A ghost of the old smile, crooked, exhausted. "I have arranged my ribs specifically to make it difficult for you to throw me out." "You got clawed by a thing in Bermondsey." "The clawing was incidental. Bermondsey was where the man was who knew who took Eva's translation of the Malphora fragments, and I went there because I have spent eleven months collecting reasons to be useful to you that were not simply — " he stopped. "Not simply what." "That I wanted to see you," he said. "That I have wanted to see you every day since March, and I ran out of better reasons somewhere around Tuesday." The rain came harder against the window. Ptolemy stretched, resettled. Rory looked at the taped gauze under her hands, the rise and fall of it, and felt something in her chest give way along a fault line she'd been pretending wasn't there. "You're an idiot," she said. "Fluently. In four languages." She stood up. Her knees were stiff, her palms were sticky, and her heart was going like a fist on a door. She put one hand flat against the unmarked side of his chest, feeling the heat come up through the skin — his mother's circulation, apparently, was doing fine — and she watched him go absolutely still under her touch, as though she had a blade to him instead of a hand. "Rory," he said. Not Aurora. It came out rough. "Don't move," she said. "You'll pull the stitches." "I have no stitches." "Then don't move anyway," she said, and bent, and kissed him.
