You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

Richmond Park at four in the morning smelled of wet bracken and fox. Rory kept her torch low, sweeping the beam across frost-stiff grass, and behind her Eva swore at every root. "You said a ten-minute walk." "I said Nyx said a ten-minute walk." Nyx flowed ahead of them without disturbing a single blade of grass, more absence than shape, a tall smear of dark that the torchlight refused to touch. Their voice arrived the way a draught arrives under a door. "Distance behaves poorly here. Blame the grove, not me." The oaks came up out of the mist all at once. Rory stopped hard enough that Eva walked into her shoulder. Seven of them, thick as cottage walls, standing in a ring wide enough to park a bus inside. They weren't growing so much as posted, driven into the earth like pegs, bark spiralling in grooves too regular to be accident. No branches. The trunks simply ended twelve feet up, flat and pale, as though something had sheared the crowns off and taken them elsewhere. "Those are trees," Eva said. "Those are trees, but they're stones. Rory, which is it?" "Both. Neither." Rory reached out, then didn't. The air between two of the trunks had a texture to it — a slight resistance, like pressing a palm against the skin on cooling milk. Her breath fogged and drifted sideways, into the ring, when the wind was coming from the other direction entirely. "Nyx. Is it warded?" "Invited. Not the same thing." The Shade's violet eyes brightened, two pinpricks in all that black. "It knows you're here. It has known since the car park." Under her jumper, the Heartstone pendant sat cold as a coin. That was something. In Silas' cellar it had gone hot enough to leave a pink mark on her sternum, and she'd learned to read its silence as the absence of Hel, if not the absence of trouble. "Right," Eva said. "So we knock?" Rory stepped through. The cold went out of the world. Not warmth exactly — the temperature of a held breath, of a room where someone had just been. Grass came up past her ankles, green and soft and utterly wrong for December, and among it, wildflowers: cornflowers, foxglove, ragged robin, poppies, all of them blooming together in defiance of the calendar, all of them in bloom at once when half of them had no business sharing a season. The scent hit the back of her throat and sat there, sweet and green and faintly metallic. Eva came through a second later and made a small noise, the sort people make in cathedrals. "It's summer." "It's every summer." Rory clicked the torch off. She hadn't decided to. Her thumb had made the call for her, because the light was already there — a low, honeyed glow with no source she could find, rising from the grass itself, from the undersides of leaves, from the mist that pooled at the far edge of the clearing and never once thinned or moved. Above them there were stars. Wrong ones. Rory knew Orion the way she knew her own hands, and Orion was not there, and neither was the Plough, and neither was the sick orange smear that London threw across every night sky within thirty miles. Instead: a spill of unfamiliar constellations turning slowly, visibly, the way a mobile turns over a cot. "Don't look up too long," Nyx murmured. "It gets ideas." Eva looked down fast. "What kind of ideas?" "The kind where you agree to things." They walked. The clearing was bigger inside than the ring of oaks allowed for — Rory counted forty paces and then eighty and the far treeline stayed exactly as far away as it had been, until she stopped counting, and then it was suddenly near. She marked the ground behind her out of habit and found nothing to mark. Her boots left dents in the grass that filled themselves in before she'd finished turning around. "Eva. Look at your footprints." "I'd rather not." Something moved in the flowers. Rory dropped to a crouch, hand going to the sheath at her hip, and the cold of the Fae blade bit through her glove even before she'd drawn it. In the grass, six inches from her knee, a beetle the size of a cat's paw hauled itself onto a stone. It had a shell of hammered copper — not the colour of copper, the substance, seamed and dented and beaten thin — and when it opened its wings the sound was a struck bell, small and clear. "Oh," Eva breathed. "Oh, I love him." "Don't touch it." "I'm not going to touch him." "You're reaching." "I'm gesturing." The beetle rang again and heaved itself into the air, and three more answered it from somewhere in the mist, a tiny scatter of chimes going off across the grove like church bells in distant villages. The sound faded and something else came in underneath it: water. They found the spring at the base of a hawthorn that had grown in a perfect spiral, trunk wound around itself nine times, blossom and berry on the same branch. The water came up out of a bowl of grey stone worn smooth as soap and ran off into the grass without ever making a stream. Rory knelt and looked into it and saw the wrong sky again, and beneath that, faces. Dozens. Layered like pressed flowers, blurred, none of them hers, all of them looking up. She sat back on her heels. "Nyx." "Yes." "Who's in the water?" "Everyone who drank." The Shade had gone almost solid, a man-shaped darkness with edges, and they crouched beside her without bending the grass. "They're comfortable. Some of them chose it." "Some." "Some." Nyx's whisper thinned. "Don't drink, Aurora." Eva had stopped a few feet off and was hugging her elbows. "How long have we been in here?" Rory checked her phone. The screen showed 4:11, then 4:11, then 4:11 again, the seconds standing still with the same stubborn patience as the mist. She held it up so Eva could see. "Brilliant. Fantastic. My mum's expecting me at ten." "Which ten?" Nyx said. "Don't." Deeper in, the flowers gave way to a floor of moss so thick that Rory sank to her shins, and the sound of their walking simply stopped existing — three people moving through knee-high growth in total, cottony silence, so that Eva's breathing became the loudest thing for a hundred yards. Rory found she was holding her own breath to hear better and made herself stop. Then the moss ended at a line as clean as a knife cut, and past it lay a road. Or the memory of one. Flagstones, pale, each the size of a tabletop, laid in a curve that ran off into the mist in both directions and carried marks in a script that turned Rory's eyes watery when she tried to read it. Wildflowers grew right up to the edge of the stone and not one seed had taken root in the joins. "That's not Roman," Eva said. "Is it? Tell me it's Roman." Rory crouched and put her bare palm flat on the nearest flag. It was warm. Under the warmth, faint, patient, something moved — a pulse, slow as a sleeping animal's. "It's older," Nyx said. "It goes to the Courts. Or it did, before they closed the far end and left the road lying about like a dropped rope." The violet eyes swung toward Rory. "Stand on it and it will assume you have somewhere to be." Rory took her hand off the stone. Her palm kept the heat for a long moment, then gave it up to the still, sweet, seasonless air. "Then we walk beside it," she said.
