You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The frost went first. Rory noticed it three paces before the stones — how the white crust on the bracken simply stopped, as though someone had drawn a line across Richmond Park with a ruler and told winter to keep to its own side. "That's not right," Eva said behind her. Her breath still smoked in the January air. "Rory. That's not right." "No," Rory agreed. "It isn't." The stones stood in a rough ring, seven of them that she could count, each one taller than Nyx and twice as broad. Not granite. Wood — oak, ancient beyond reckoning, grey and grain-lined and hard as flint, the trunks stripped of bark and branch and set upright in the earth like the ribs of something enormous that had lain down here and never got up again. Somebody had carved them once. The marks were nearly worn away, but Rory could feel them under her palm when she reached out: spirals, and lines crossing lines, and a shape like an eye that wasn't an eye. The wood was warm. "Rory," Eva said again. Nyx moved past her. They had spent the walk from the car park as a smear of dark between the tree trunks, a coldness at the edge of Rory's vision, but here they gathered themselves upright — six foot two of standing night, edges wavering like ink dropped in water, two points of violet burning where a face should be. *The boundary is thin,* Nyx said. The voice never came from their mouth. It arrived instead the way a draught arrives, from everywhere and nowhere, a whisper laid along the back of her neck. *Do you feel it? Like standing under a held breath.* "I feel like I'm about to be sick," Eva said. "That's the wine from last night." "That's genuinely unhelpful, Rory." Rory pressed her hand flat to the Heartstone through her jumper. The crimson gem sat cold against her sternum, inert, giving her nothing — and that was its own kind of information. Whatever waited past the stones, it wasn't Hel. She'd learned to read the pendant like a barometer: warmth for the burning places, silence for everything else. Silence now. Somehow that didn't reassure her. She stepped between the stones. The world went quiet the way a door closes. One moment there was Richmond: distant traffic, the crows arguing in the oaks, a jet dragging its long white scratch across the sky. The next, nothing. No — not nothing. Sound, but *different* sound, as if she'd surfaced into another room of the world. Bees. A great slow drone of them, low and sweet. Water somewhere, moving over stone. And under all of it, so faint she doubted it each time she caught it, something like a voice holding one long note. The air was warm and heavy and it tasted green. It tasted the way cut grass smells, the way the inside of a greenhouse smells, and Rory took a breath so deep it hurt her ribs and realised she had been cold for four months without noticing. "Oh," Eva said. She had come through behind her and stopped dead. "Oh, *what*." The clearing shouldn't have fit. Rory had walked around the outside of the stone ring twenty minutes ago; it was maybe thirty feet across. What lay in front of her now rolled away in soft green folds for what looked like half a mile, ringed by trees she had no names for, and the grass was so thick with flowers it looked less like a meadow than a spilled paintbox. Bluebells. Poppies. Foxgloves standing in purple spires. Snowdrops shouldering up between the poppies, which was wrong, which was *impossible*, because snowdrops in January she could believe and poppies in July she could believe, and here they were tangled in each other's roots like the year had come apart in someone's hands and been put back wrong. Above, the sky was the wrong colour. Not amber, not the sick warmth she'd seen in her worst dreams, but a pale gold-green, like sunlight through a bottle, and there was no sun in it anywhere. "Where's the shadow?" she said. Nyx had gone very still beside her. *There is none.* She looked down. The flowers cast none. Eva cast none. Her own boots stood in the grass without a smudge of dark beneath them, and the light came from everywhere at once, even and depthless, the light of a place that had never learned what evening was for. "Are you all right?" *I am* — Nyx's edges rippled — *visible.* A pause. *I have not been visible in three hundred and eighty years. I dislike it.* Rory almost laughed and thought better of it. She started walking. The grass didn't crush underfoot; it parted and closed, parted and closed, and she had to look back twice to be sure she was leaving any trail at all. Eva kept up on her left, phone held out in front of her like a torch. "Signal's dead," she said. "Camera won't focus. Watch is — Rory, look at my watch." The second hand was moving. Slowly, then quickly, then not at all, then backwards for the space of four beats, then off again. "Right." Rory's mouth was dry. "So we don't rely on the watch." "How long do we have?" "I don't know." "How long have we *been* here?" "Eva. I don't know." Deeper in, the wildflowers gave way to a stand of trees with bark like poured silver, and things moved among the branches that Rory decided, firmly, were moths. They were the size of her spread hand, and their wings were not coloured but *lit*, pale and cold, and when one of them passed close to her face she heard, very distinctly, a child laughing about nine miles away. Eva reached for one. "Don't," Rory said, and caught her wrist. The crescent scar on her own wrist prickled, the old white curve of it, the way it did before thunder. "Don't touch anything. Don't eat anything. Don't say yes to anything." "You sound like a pamphlet." "I sound like somebody who wants to see next Tuesday." They came to the water. It rose out of a cleft in a mossed rock and ran down into a basin the size of a bathtub, and it was the clearest thing Rory had ever seen — so clear that for a moment she thought the basin was empty and only the little rings and dimples on the surface told her otherwise. She crouched. Cold spray on her knuckles. And in the water her own face looked back at her, black hair, blue eyes, and then it didn't, and she was looking at a woman in a high-collared coat standing on a bridge she didn't recognise, with the sky behind her the colour of a struck match, and the woman had Rory's face and was screaming. She sat back hard on her heels. *Aurora.* Nyx's whisper, close. *Look at the ground.* She looked. The moss between the rock and the flowers was deep and springy and held every mark: her own knee-print, the scuff of Eva's trainers, a fine crazing where a bird had walked. And through it, from the trees to the spring and away again, ran a line of nothing at all. Not a footprint. A *path* — the moss leaning aside in a narrow, purposeful track, the way grass leans in a wind that has passed, and nowhere along its length the smallest dent of a heel or a toe. The bees stopped. Rory stood up slowly and put her hand on the knife at her belt — the ordinary knife, the kitchen one from the Golden Empress, and she had never in her life been so aware of how ordinary a thing could be. "Something's coming," Eva breathed. "Somebody," Rory said. The silver trees stirred without any wind, and out of them stepped a woman with hair to her waist like poured moonlight, in a gown the colour of nothing, and she came across the moss leaving it perfectly, terribly undisturbed. "Three," said Isolde Varga, with pale lavender eyes and a smile like a closing door. "I asked for three hundred years. The Courts sent me three. Well. Come and sit down, little delivery girl, before the hour eats your week."
