**SCENE — "Two Languages, One Photograph"** *Location: The Cider Press Café, Main Street, Alborn, MN. Late afternoon.* --- **Hunter:** "Ma'am? Excuse me. You mind if I sit?" **Melanie:** *(startled, clutching camera)* "Oh — Entschuldigung, ich habe Sie nicht kommen hören." **Hunter:** "…Okay. That's — that's not English." **Melanie:** "Ich spreche kein Englisch. Tut mir leid. Gar keins." **Hunter:** "Right. Yeah. I'm gonna keep talking anyway, 'cause that's how I'm built. Hunter Ross, Alborn PD." *(shows badge)* "Detective." **Melanie:** *(sitting up straighter, voice tightening)* "Polizei. Ja. Gut. Gut, dass Sie hier sind — ich wollte kommen, aber ich wusste nicht, wie ich es sagen soll." **Hunter:** "You recognize the badge. That's something. You were up at the Ostergaard orchard Tuesday night. Somebody saw a girl with a camera on the access road around ten." **Melanie:** "Tuesday? Dienstag, meinen Sie? Ja — ja, ich war dort. Ich wollte den Nebel fotografieren, über den Apfelbäumen, wenn der Mond aufgeht. Es sollte nur schön sein. Es war nicht schön." **Hunter:** "Okay, you said Tuesday. Dienstag. That's Tuesday, I know that one from my grandmother. So you were there." **Melanie:** "Ich war dort, und ich habe etwas gesehen, das ich nicht sehen sollte." *(hands shaking on the camera)* "Zwei Männer. Ein Lastwagen ohne Kennzeichen. Und ein Mädchen, die geschrien hat, und dann hat sie nicht mehr geschrien." **Hunter:** "Hey. Hey — slow down. I don't have a word of this, but I know what a scared person sounds like, and you sound scared." **Melanie:** "Natürlich habe ich Angst! Ich bin dreißig Jahre alt, ich bin seit sechs Wochen in diesem Land, und ich habe niemanden, dem ich das erzählen kann!" **Hunter:** "Alright. Different approach." *(taps the table twice, then his own chest)* "Hunter." *(points at her)* "You?" **Melanie:** "Melanie. Melanie Roth." **Hunter:** "Melanie. Good. Melanie, is there anybody in this town who speaks German? Deutsch? *Sprechen* — see, that's the whole thing, that's my whole vocabulary right there." **Melanie:** "Deutsch — ja! Frau Ostergaard, die alte Frau am Marktstand, sie spricht ein wenig Deutsch. Ihre Großmutter kam aus Bayern." **Hunter:** "Ostergaard. You just said Ostergaard." *(leans in)* "That's the orchard. That's the same name as the orchard, Melanie." **Melanie:** *(nodding hard, misunderstanding)* "Ja, ja — Ostergaard! Genau! Deshalb war ich dort!" **Hunter:** "…Great. Fantastic. Two people agreeing about completely different things. This is my career." **Melanie:** *(turning the camera around, thumbing to a photo)* "Hier. Bitte. Sehen Sie. Das müssen Sie sehen — das ist das Einzige, was ich beweisen kann." **Hunter:** *(going very still)* "…Is that a hand? Melanie, is that a hand in the trees?" **Melanie:** "Ich habe geblitzt. Ich wollte nicht blitzen, es war ein Unfall, und dann hat er mich angesehen. Er hat direkt in die Kamera gesehen." **Hunter:** "Can you — can I take this? The camera. May I?" *(holds out his hand slowly)* "I'm not gonna keep it. I need the picture." **Melanie:** *(pulling it back to her chest)* "Nein. Nein, bitte, nicht die Kamera. Sie ist alles, was ich habe. Ich mache Ihnen Kopien, ja? Kopien. Auf einem — ach, wie sagt man das —" *(mimes a USB stick)* **Hunter:** "Copies. Yeah. Okay, copies, that works, that's a word I understand out of your mouth. Kopien. Okay." **Melanie:** "Kopien. Ja. Morgen. Morgen früh, in der Bibliothek. Es gibt dort einen Computer." **Hunter:** "Morgen. Tomorrow. Grandma taught me that too, God rest her." *(exhales)* "Melanie, listen to me even though you can't. Don't go back up that road. Not for fog, not for the moon, not for anything." **Melanie:** "Ich weiß nicht, was Sie sagen, aber Sie sehen aus wie ein Mann, der mir sagt, ich soll vorsichtig sein." **Hunter:** "Yeah. Something like that." *(Hunter's phone buzzes. He glances at it, and his whole posture changes.)* **Hunter:** "Ross. …Say that again. Where? …No, hold everybody at the gate, don't let one boot on that ground until I'm there. Two minutes." *(hangs up)* **Melanie:** *(quietly)* "Etwas ist passiert. Ich sehe es in Ihrem Gesicht." **Hunter:** *(standing, sliding a card across the table)* "That's my cell. Anything happens, anything at all, you call and you just — talk. Talk German at me, I'll find somebody. You understand? Anything." **Melanie:** *(taking the card)* "Ich verstehe nicht. Aber — danke. Danke, dass Sie sich hingesetzt haben." **Hunter:** "Tomorrow. Morgen. Library. Kopien." *(one last look at the camera)* "And Melanie — don't show that picture to anybody in this town but me." **Melanie:** "Ja. Morgen." *(Hunter goes. The bell over the café door rings. Melanie sits alone, looking at the card, then back at her camera screen.)* **Melanie:** *(barely a whisper, to no one)* "Der Mann auf dem Foto… er war heute Morgen hier. Er hat mir den Kaffee gebracht." ---
