You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The stones didn't show on any map. Rory checked twice, thumbing her phone until the screen went dark and stayed dark, then shoving it in her pocket like it had insulted her. "Battery?" Eva asked. "Full. Was full." She shook it. Nothing. "Brilliant." Nyx flowed ahead of them along the frost-stiff grass, not walking so much as spilling, a tall smear of dark that thinned where the bracken thickened. Where their shape crossed the deer path the frost went black and glassy. "Phones don't work past the boundary," Nyx said. Their voice arrived from just behind Rory's left ear, though the shadow was ten paces off. "Nor watches. Nor anything with a small hungry heart in it." "You could've mentioned that in the car." "You were driving. You get short with me when you drive." The oaks came out of the dark all at once. Rory had been watching her boots, picking through a tangle of dead bramble, and when she looked up there were six of them ringed around a gap in the trees — not trees themselves, though they'd started that way. Trunks stripped bare and standing upright, roots and all, the roots clawing at open air above her head. Bark worn smooth at shoulder height, the way a church step wears under centuries of shoes. Eva stopped hard enough that her boot heel skidded. "Those aren't growing." "No." Rory put her palm flat on the nearest one. Warm. Not sun-warm — the sun had gone down over Roehampton an hour ago and the park had gone to that blue-grey that made every deer look like a rumour. This was blood warm. She took her hand back and the warmth stayed on her skin like a handprint. "Nyx. Is it meant to do that?" "It knows you." "That's not an answer, that's a threat." "It's neither." The shadow gathered itself between two of the stones and gestured — an arm resolving out of nothing, elegant, then dissolving at the wrist. "Through. Don't step on the threshold. Over it." Eva went first, because Eva always went first, and Rory hated it and loved it in equal measure. She lifted her knee high like a woman crossing a stile and came down on the far side and made a noise Rory had never heard her make. The cold went out of the air. Rory stepped over. It wasn't a change in temperature so much as a change in season, complete, absolute, as if she'd walked out of December through a door and into a June that had never heard of December. Grass to her shins, soft and springing. Wildflowers everywhere — cornflower, ragged robin, cowslip, things that had no business flowering in the same month, let alone the same night — and above them the sky was the deep transparent blue of nine o'clock in high summer, with two stars in it and no moon. Behind her, through the gap in the stones, she could still see the frozen park. Bare branches. Her own breath still hanging there in a small grey ghost she'd left behind. "Rory." Eva's voice had gone thin. "Rory, look at the grass." She looked. Eva's boots had pressed two neat hollows into it. Rory's had pressed two more. And between them, leading away toward the centre of the clearing, was a third set — narrow, barefoot, unhurried — that stopped after four paces and simply didn't continue. Not turned. Not doubled back. Stopped, like someone had run out of the idea of walking. "That's from tonight," Eva said. "The grass hasn't even lifted yet." Nyx passed through the stones without acknowledging them. "She let you see those. She doesn't leave them otherwise." "Why let us see them?" "Manners." The Shade drifted low over the flowers and the flowers turned their heads to follow, every stem tilting as the darkness slid by, then straightening again. "A hostess tells you she's home." Rory pressed her hand to her sternum, under her jacket, where the pendant sat against her ribs. She'd worn it every day for two months and every day it had done nothing except once, on Blackfriars Bridge, when it had gone so hot she'd yelped and dropped a bag of prawn toast into the Thames. Now it was inert. Cool as a coin. Whatever this place was, it was not Hel, and the stone had no opinion about it. They went deeper. Sound arrived slowly, the way it does when you stop expecting your own city. No planes. That was the thing that got under Rory's skin first — the sky over Richmond was never empty, there was always something climbing out of Heathrow, always that low tearing hush at the edge of hearing. Here: nothing. Instead there were bees, though it was full night and no bee should be flying, and running water somewhere off to the left, and under both of those a sound she couldn't place until she'd walked twenty more steps and understood it was singing. Not words. Not one voice. Something the way a whole orchard sounds in wind, if orchards could hold a note. "Eva." "I hear it." "Is it coming from the ground?" Eva crouched, put her ear near the flowers, and came up looking like she wanted to be sick. "It's coming from everywhere. Rory, I don't like this. I like it very much and I don't like that I like it." "That's the correct response," Nyx said. "Hold on to it." The clearing shouldn't have been able to hold what it held. From outside, the ring of stones had bounded a space maybe forty feet across. They'd been walking five minutes and the far edge kept declining to arrive. Rory turned once to check the way back and found the gap in the oaks where she expected it, small and bright with winter — and then she took three more steps and turned again and it was still exactly as far away as before. "Don't do that," Nyx said. "Do what?" "Measure. It resents being measured." Rory laughed, once, with no humour in it. "It's a field." "It's a pocket. A crease. Two cloths pressed together and one seam." The shadow paused by a hawthorn heavy with both blossom and fruit, white flowers and red haws on the same branch, and Rory watched their form flatten and darken as though the tree gave them something. "You're standing in the fold, Aurora. Half your foot is in Richmond. Half is somewhere with no name you could pronounce. Walk gently and it stays a fold. Stamp about with a tape measure and it becomes a question, and questions here get answered." Eva had drifted to the stream. Rory went after her and found her kneeling on flat stones, sleeve pushed back, hand hovering above water that ran clear and shallow over gravel — except the gravel was wrong. Rory knelt too and squinted and made out the shapes: coins, hundreds, thousands, worn down to blank discs and pale wafers, silver and something greener than copper, and among them small twists of metal, hairpins, a ring, a tooth with a hole drilled through it. "Don't," Nyx said, before Eva's fingers broke the surface. Eva pulled back. "I wasn't taking. I was looking." "Every one of those was a bargain. You put your hand in that water and you're offering to take somebody's debt off them." A pause; the whisper thinned to almost nothing. "Some of them have been waiting a long while for a volunteer." Rory sat back on her heels. Her knees were wet. The singing had risen a little, or she'd stopped filtering it out, and now she could feel it in the small bones of her jaw. "Right," she said. "Nobody touches anything. Nobody eats anything. Nobody says yes to anything." "Nobody says thank you, either," Nyx added. Eva looked up. "Why not thank you?" "Because it means you've received something. And if you've received, you owe."
