You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

Rain came in sideways off Frith Street, the kind that got under a collar and stayed there. Silas had the lemons out on the board and the radio low, some panel show nobody laughed at, and the green neon put its usual sick wash across the wet floor by the door. Half four on a Tuesday. The dead hour. Rory sat at the far end of the bar with a stack of receipts from the Golden Empress spread out like a losing hand of cards, sorting them by the smudge of soy sauce. "Fourteen deliveries and one of them tipped me in Monopoly money," she said. "Frame it." "I'm framing the note that came with it." The door opened. A man stopped on the mat, shook his umbrella out into the street like it was a courtesy he'd learned somewhere expensive, and folded it in three neat movements. Camel coat. Grey at the temples in a way that looked arranged. Silas registered the shoulders first, then the way the man's weight settled onto his right foot, and put the knife down. "We're not doing food," Silas said. "I know exactly what you're doing." The man unwound his scarf. "You've had that dartboard since the Blair government and you never once let anybody play on it." Silas took a long breath through his nose. "Callum." "Silas." "You've gone fat." "I've gone happy. It presents similarly." Callum crossed the floor and put his hand out, and Silas took it, and the handshake went on a second longer than either of them wanted it to. The silver signet ring caught the lamp. Callum glanced at it and let go. "Sit down before you drip on the photographs." "God forbid." Callum looked up at the wall as he shed the coat — the maps with their pins, the black-and-white faces, a Kodak-yellow shot of a hotel bar in Trieste. "You've added to it." "I've subtracted." "Yes." Callum settled onto the stool with a small grunt, hitched his trousers at the knee, and the whole gesture belonged to a different man than the one Silas remembered kicking a fire door off its hinges in Bratislava. "You took down the one with the boat." Silas reached for the Lagavulin without asking and put two glasses on the wood. "Soda water," Callum said. "Lime, if you've got it." The bottle stopped halfway to the glass. "Nine years in June." "Nine years." "You can pour it and watch me not drink it, if that helps." Silas put the whisky back on the shelf, ran the soda, cut a wheel of lime and hung it on the rim, and set it down on a napkin like a man performing a task he found personally insulting. Rory watched all of it over the top of her receipts and said nothing, which Silas noted and filed. "Nine years," he said. "So the thing in Lisbon." "The thing in Lisbon was the eighth or ninth thing. It just happened to be the one with witnesses." Callum drank. He held the glass in both hands the way people did in church halls, and there was a wedding band on him, plain, worn thin at the underside. "I've a wife. Two boys and a girl. The girl's nine, which is a coincidence I find slightly on the nose." "What do you do?" "Risk advisory. Zurich." "Say that again with a straight face." "Risk advisory." Callum smiled and it reached his eyes, which was the part Silas didn't like. "Corporates who want to build a plant somewhere with a colonel in it. I write them thirty pages telling them not to, they build it anyway, I invoice them, and nobody dies. Mostly." "Mostly." "I said mostly." The radio audience laughed at something. Silas turned it off. In the silence the rain took over, running in the gutter above the door with a tin rattle he'd been meaning to fix since 2011. "You look well," Callum said. "I look like a man who sells gin to advertising executives." "You look like you haven't slept since Prague." Rory's pen stopped. Silas didn't look at her, but she gathered the receipts into a stack, tapped them square, and went on gathering them very slowly. "My knee's fine, since you're circling it," Silas said. "Stairs are a negotiation. I keep the whisky at hip height." "I wasn't circling it." "You were doing your approach. You always did an approach. Two questions to warm the room and one to open the vein." Silas leaned back against the till. "You had a lovely touch, Callum. Best I ever trained." "Don't." "It's a compliment." "It's a bill." Callum turned the glass a quarter turn on the napkin. "I came because I'm in London until Thursday and I got as far as the corner of Dean Street last night and turned round and went back to the hotel. Sat there watching the news in a dressing gown like a widower. So tonight I walked faster." "Well done." "You could ask me a question." "How's the girl. The nine-year-old." "Bea." Callum's mouth moved before the rest of him caught up. "She's got a violin and no gift for it whatsoever and she practises in the hall where the acoustics are worst, on purpose, because she likes the size of the sound. She'd have got on with you. She's got that thing you have where she doesn't blink when she's caught out." "Bring her in. I'll teach her darts." "You don't let anyone play the dartboard." "I'd let her." Callum laughed, once, and rubbed his thumb along his jaw, and then the laugh went out of the room and left the rain behind. He looked at the wall again, at the faces. "Tereza's not up there." Silas said nothing. "You had her in the Trieste one. In the corner, with the coat over her arm. You've got a different photograph in that frame." "I rearrange." "You cut her out." "I rearrange," Silas said again, and his voice went flat and pleasant, and Rory slid off her stool, gathered her satchel, and made for the stairs at the back without being told. Silas caught her eye on the way past and gave her the smallest nod he had. The door at the top clicked shut. Callum waited until it did. "You sent her to the tram." "I did." "And I drove." "You drove." "That's the whole of it, is it. Nineteen months of it and it fits in five words each." "That's the accurate version." Silas picked up the knife, then set it down again, and put both hands flat on the bar. "The long one's just the accurate one with feelings in it, and I've had twelve years to learn that the feelings don't change the timings." "I wrote you eleven times." "I know how many." "You never opened them." "I opened all of them." Silas' thumb went round and round the signet ring. "There's a box under the stairs with your handwriting all over it. That's not the confession you came for, so don't take it." Callum sat very still. Outside, a taxi went through the standing water and threw a sheet of it against the glass, and the green light broke up and reassembled on the floor. "I need you to say her name," Callum said. "Out loud, in this room, once. That's it. Then I'll finish my soda water and go and be a man in Zurich."
