You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The bracken gave way without warning. One step Aurora's boots were crunching through frost-stiff leaves, the next they sank into moss that gave like a mattress, and the November cold peeled off her skin as though someone had opened an oven door. "Don't," she said, catching Eva's sleeve. Eva stopped with one foot lifted. Ahead of them, two oaks leaned toward each other, trunks scarred with grooves too regular to be weather. Between them the air held a seam, a vertical wrinkle where the trees on the far side sat a hand's width lower than the trees on this one. "That's a door," Eva said. "That's a door and nobody built it." "Stones," Nyx corrected. Their voice arrived from somewhere behind Aurora's left ear, thin as a draught under a door. "Grown, not raised. She let the wood do the work." Aurora pressed her thumb into the pendant at her throat. The crimson stone lay dead against her sternum, no warmth, no pulse. Three weeks she'd carried it and it had never once gone quiet. "It's off," she said. "It's polite." Nyx flowed past her, a smear of dusk with edges. "Hel doesn't reach here. Nothing reaches here. Mind the threshold — step over, not on." Eva went first, because Eva always went first when she was frightened, arms out for balance like a child on a wall. She crossed. She kept walking. Then she stopped and made a sound Aurora had never heard her make. Aurora stepped over. Sound changed. Not louder or softer — deeper, as if the clearing had a floor a long way down and every noise fell into it before coming back up. Somewhere behind them the M3 had been grinding away through the trees. Now there was nothing but a low hum in the bones of her skull, the note a wet finger draws off a glass rim. The grove opened out across maybe forty yards. Grass to the ankle, silver-backed, so that when the air moved the whole floor turned pale and then dark again, like a tide. Wildflowers stood in it: bluebells that had no business existing in November, foxgloves shoulder-high, and things Aurora had no name for at all — bells the colour of raw meat, spirals of white that turned to follow her instead of the light. Above, through a lattice of branches, the sky sat the wrong shade. Not black. A deep bruised green, and the stars in it were too many and none of them in the right places. "Rory." Eva's voice had gone flat. "Where's the plough. Where's the Big Dipper, Rory, it's always over the tree line, my dad showed me—" "I know." "So where is it?" "Not here." Nyx had drifted to the centre of the clearing and stood there, and Aurora noticed it then, the thing that had been scratching at her since the threshold. Nothing threw a shadow. The oaks stood in that green light with nothing pooled at their roots. Eva's boots met the grass and no dark shape met them back. Aurora held her hand up and turned it and the grass beneath stayed silver. "Nyx." She kept her voice level. "Can you still—" "No." The word came out clipped. The Shade's outline had gone hard, more solid than Aurora had ever seen them, violet eyes burning in a face that was almost a face. "There's nowhere to go. It's all light here, all the way down. Four hundred years I have not stood in one place like meat and I do not care for it." "You look almost human." "I know what I look like." Nyx flexed a hand and watched the fingers move as if the fingers belonged to somebody else. "Walk. If she's watching, she's watching the middle." They walked. The ground rose under them without seeming to rise; Aurora's calves burned as though she were climbing while her eyes insisted she crossed level land. Halfway across, Eva knelt and pushed the grass apart with both hands. "Rory. Come look at this." Under the blades lay a paving stone, and around it another, and another, a spiral of them going in and in, each cut with lines that met and split and met again. Moss had claimed the edges but not the grooves. Something kept the grooves clean. "Is that writing?" "It's a map." Aurora traced one line with her fingertip. Cold. Colder than the air, colder than anything in a place this warm had a right to be. "Look — that's the river. That's the bend at Twickenham, that's the loop. And then it keeps going." "Going where? There's nothing past there, that's just—" Eva stopped. "That's Hounslow." "It's not Hounslow on this map." "Do not follow the lines with your eyes," Nyx said. "That's how they take you. Stand up." Eva stood so fast she stumbled. Aurora took her elbow and felt the tremor going through her, fine and fast, a plucked wire. Something moved at the tree line. Aurora turned with her hand already at her hip, though she'd left the Fae blade wrapped in a tea towel in the glovebox of the delivery moped, an act of caution that seemed less clever by the second. What came out of the trees stood knee-high and walked on too many legs and was made, as far as she could tell, of light packed into the shape of a deer. It stopped. It looked at them with no eyes. Then it lowered its head to the grass and grazed, and where its mouth passed, the silver blades went out like blown candles and stayed dark. "It's eating," Eva whispered. "It's eating the shine." "Then don't stand where it's hungry." Nyx had gone very still. "Aurora. Your throat." She looked down. The Heartstone had begun to glow — not the crimson pulse she knew, the warm flutter that meant a rift within a hundred yards. This was a slow bloom of white light in the heart of the stone, and it was climbing the silver chain link by link, and the links were beginning to sing. Aurora fumbled the chain over her head and held the pendant out at arm's length. The light held steady. It leaned, the way a compass needle leans, toward the far side of the clearing, where the flowers grew thickest and the ground dropped into a hollow ringed with white stones. "That's not a stone," Eva said, staring at the pendant. "Rory, that's not a stone anymore, look at it—" "I'm looking." "You said an unknown benefactor. You said that like it was funny. That was three weeks ago and you laughed—" "Eva." "Somebody in this place gave you that and you've been wearing it to work." The grazing light-deer lifted its head. In the hollow, the wildflowers began to fold — not wilt, fold, closing in sequence from the outer ring inward, a stadium of small mouths shutting one row at a time, and the hum in Aurora's skull dropped an octave until she felt it in her teeth. Nyx moved between her and the hollow, solid enough now to block the view. "She knows we're here," they said. "Whatever you do, don't accept anything. Not food, not a name, not a gift you haven't already got." Aurora closed her fist around the pendant. It burned cold in her palm and kept pointing.
