You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

Frost cracked under Rory's boots all the way up the hill, and then it didn't. She stopped. Behind her, the grass wore a white crust that caught the last of the December light. Ahead of her, three steps ahead, it was green. Not winter-green, not the dull olive of a park lawn in the dark months — green like May, thick with clover, and threaded through with small yellow flowers she had no name for. "Tell me you see that," she said. Eva crouched and pressed her palm flat to the turf. "It's warm." "Don't touch things." Nyx flowed past them both, a tall smear of dark that resolved into shoulders and a head as it moved. "Not yet. The boundary has opinions." The standing stones rose out of the slope in a rough ring, seven of them, each one taller than Nyx and gnarled in a way stone had no business being. Bark-textured. Rory put her hand near the closest and felt the give of wood, the deep hard grain of oak, though the surface was grey and pitted like granite left out for a thousand winters. Someone had carved a spiral into it once. The spiral had grown, the way scars grow on trees, and now it sat lopsided and stretched, three feet across. "Oak," she said. "These are oaks that turned to rock." "Or rock that dreamed of being oaks." Nyx's voice arrived from a different direction than their body. "Stand between the fourth and fifth. Not the third. Never the third." Eva looked up. "Why never the third?" "Because I asked the same question in 1802 and the man who answered me is still answering." Rory went between the fourth and fifth. The cold left her like a coat pulled off her shoulders. Sound came apart and reassembled itself — the drone of the South Circular, the dogs, the distant clatter of the city all fell away in the space of one breath, and what filled the hole was birdsong. Layers of it. Too much of it, and wrong somehow, the notes rising where they should have fallen, phrases running backwards into their own beginnings. The pendant against her breastbone lay cool and still. That, at least, was a mercy. She'd learned what its warmth meant. "Rory." Eva's voice cracked. "Rory, look up." The sky over the grove held a sun. Not the sun — this one sat low and fat and rose-coloured in the west, and the shadows it threw pointed the wrong way, east to west, toward the light instead of away. Rory watched her own shadow stretch out ahead of her toward the glow and felt her stomach turn over. "That's not physics," she said. "No." Nyx stood beside her, and their shadow — Rory checked twice — didn't exist at all. "It's manners. Light here goes where it's invited." The clearing sloped down into a bowl maybe forty yards across. Wildflowers everywhere, and not in patches; in bands, in deliberate arcs, blue running into white running into a violent orange, as though someone had laid them out with a plan and then walked away for three centuries. Cow parsley shoulder-high. Bluebells, in December, next to poppies, next to something with black petals and a throat full of small pale seeds that clicked when the air moved. There was no air moving. The grass moved anyway, bending in long slow waves from the ring of stones toward the centre. Eva took out her phone. The screen showed a photograph of the inside of a wardrobe. She swiped. The next one showed the same wardrobe from a different angle. "Put it away," Rory said. "I've never owned a wardrobe." "Put it away, Eva." They walked down. The turf underfoot had a spring to it that felt less like ground and more like the flank of something asleep. Rory counted her steps out of habit, out of the part of her brain that had once been trained to build arguments and now built exits. Twenty-two steps in, she looked back and the stones stood a hundred yards off, easily, and the frost beyond them had gone completely — just green, all the way to a horizon that hadn't been there ten minutes ago. "Nyx." "I know." "Say something useful." "Distance is a courtesy too," Nyx said. "It'll give it back when we leave. Usually." Halfway down they found the bees. Rory heard them first, a hum pitched low enough to feel in her teeth, and then a cloud of them came up out of the black-petalled flowers and hung in front of her face, and they weren't bees. They had the shape of bees and the sound of bees, but the light went through them, and where the wings should have blurred there was only a faint smear of gold, like sparks off a struck match caught mid-flight and held. One landed on the back of her hand. Weightless. She felt heat, and then a spot of cold, and then it lifted and the small crescent scar on her left wrist itched furiously for a count of three and stopped. "They tasted you," Nyx said. "Excellent. Wonderful." "They'll tell her you're here." A pause. "That's the point. Better they carry the message than you shout it." Eva had stopped by a fallen trunk, and Rory came to stand beside her, and neither of them spoke for a moment. The trunk was full of water. Not hollowed and holding rainwater — full, the wood open along its length like a cut fruit, and the water inside stood in it dark and perfectly level and deeper than the trunk was thick. Rory leaned over. Her reflection leaned back. Then it turned its head to the left, unhurried, and looked at something over its own shoulder, and Rory's own neck stayed exactly where it was. She stepped back so fast she trod on Eva's foot. "What," Eva said. "What did you see." "Nothing. Don't look in it." "Rory—" "Don't look in it." Her heart hammered. She made herself breathe. "It's showing something else. Somewhere else. I don't know." Nyx drifted over the water without disturbing it. "The grove keeps its own records. Every visitor for three hundred years. Some of them are still in there, wondering when they'll be let out." "You could have mentioned that before we walked in." "You'd have walked in anyway." Rory couldn't argue, so she didn't. She turned instead toward the centre of the bowl, where the flowers gave way to a circle of bare earth, dark and swept clean, ringed by stones the size of loaves. Nothing grew inside it. Nothing had ever grown inside it, by the look of the soil — no roots, no stems, no seed heads. A ring of absence in the middle of all that riot. And through it, from the far edge to the near one, ran a path. Grass pressed down. Flower stems folded aside. A track worn smooth and shallow by a great many crossings, and not one print in the dust of the bare circle. Not the ghost of a heel. Not the mark of a toe. Eva crouched at the edge of it. "Somebody walks here. A lot." "Somebody walks everywhere here," Nyx said. Rory knelt and laid two fingers in the swept earth. It was cold. Colder than the frost outside, cold enough that her fingertips went numb, and under the cold, very faint, something turned over — a pressure, a slow beat, like a hand knocking on a door from a long way underneath. The birdsong stopped. All of it, every layer, cut clean, and the silence that dropped into the grove was so complete that Rory heard the seeds clicking in the black flowers thirty feet behind her. "Oh," Eva breathed. "Oh, I don't like that." The light thickened. The rose-coloured sun didn't move, but the shadows swung, all of them at once, sweeping around like the spokes of a wheel until every dark line in the clearing pointed at the swept circle — at the path — at the three of them. "Heads down," Nyx said, and their voice had lost its whisper. "Now. Both of you." Rory kept her chin up. The far end of the path was empty, and then it wasn't. Silver hair first, catching that impossible light, and pale eyes the colour of the last inch of dusk, and a woman standing in the flowers with no bend or break in a single stem around her feet. "Three came through the fourth gate," Isolde said, "and only two of you have shadows to leave behind."
