You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The frost gave out three steps past the standing stones, and that was how Rory knew they'd crossed. She felt it in her ankles first. One moment she was wading through bracken stiff with December, each stalk snapping like a bone, breath ghosting out of her in the blue dusk of Richmond Park. The next, the ground under her boots went soft and giving, and the cold peeled off her skin the way a wet coat comes off in a warm room. She stopped. Behind her, the two oaks leaned toward each other, black and ancient, their trunks so deeply grooved they looked braided. Between them she could still see the park — grey grass, the sodium smear of the city beyond, a deer standing frozen with its head up, watching them go. It looked like a photograph of somewhere she used to live. "Oh," said Eva, very quietly. "Oh, that's not right." Rory turned around and forgot, for a moment, how to make words. Wildflowers. Acres of them, waist-high, in a clearing that had absolutely no business fitting inside Richmond Park. Cornflowers, foxgloves, poppies, and a hundred she had no names for — one that hung its head like a lantern and glowed with the soft, unbothered light of an ember; another that opened and closed, slowly, in time with something. The air was thick and green and sweet, the smell of cut grass and warm stone and pollen, the smell of a July afternoon when you're eleven and no one has called you in yet. Above, the sky was the deep violet of the last minute of a summer evening, and it held that minute. It did not move on. "It's December," Eva said. "Rory. It's the fourteenth of December." "Not in here." Rory crouched and put her palm flat on the earth. Warm. Not sun-warm — deeper, like the flank of a sleeping animal. "Don't pick anything." "I wasn't going to pick anything." "I mean it. Don't pick anything, don't eat anything, don't drink anything, and don't tell anyone your full name." Eva made a small strangled noise. "You said this would be a walk." Nyx came through the stones last, and came through wrong. Rory heard it before she saw it — a sound like breath drawn through a keyhole. The Shade had crossed the boundary as they crossed everything, poured along the seam where the oaks' shadows met, and the grove had nowhere for them to go. The violet light lay evenly over the flowers, gentle and total, and it cast almost no shadow at all. Nyx unfolded upward into their solid shape — six foot two of silhouette, a man-shaped absence with two faint violet coals for eyes — and Rory watched them flinch. "I am *seen* here," Nyx whispered. The voice always arrived from a slightly different direction than the body; now it came from directly behind her ear, and she made herself not jump. "There is nowhere to be thin. I have not been this... present since—" A pause with an edge on it. "In a long while." "Can you get back out?" "Ask me in an hour." Nyx tipped their head at the sky. "Or whatever an hour is." Eva was already looking at her phone. Rory saw the screen and reached over to turn it off. "Don't." "It says half four. It said half four when we got out of the car. It's been *saying* half four for—" Eva laughed, the high thin laugh she did when she was frightened and didn't want to be babied about it. "How long have we been in here?" "Long enough. Come on. Stay where I can see you both." They went deeper. There was a path, or something that consented to be one — a trodden line through the flowers, wide enough for a single person, which Rory did not believe in at all until she noticed that the blooms leaned away from it, deliberately, the way people make room in a corridor. The stems whispered against her thighs. Underfoot the ground rose and fell in long slow swells like a sea that had been told to stop moving and had mostly obliged, and when she looked back she could see the two oaks growing smaller and further away much faster than they had any right to. She could no longer see the deer. She could no longer see the sodium glow of London, and she had a strong, stupid urge to run back and check it was still there. The sound came up around them gradually. She'd taken it at first for wind in the grass, then for water, and then a phrase repeated and she understood it was music. Strings, maybe, and something breathier under it, and no player anywhere. It came from about forty feet ahead. When they walked forty feet, it came from about forty feet ahead. "Do you hear—" Eva began. "Yes. Don't follow it." "It's *ahead* of us." "Then walk beside it." There were bees in the foxgloves the size of her thumb, iridescent green-black, and they had five wings each; Rory counted twice to be sure. There was a stream that crossed their path and ran, calmly and without apology, uphill, and its water was so clear that she could see every pebble on its bed, and every pebble was a small carved face, and every face had its eyes shut. She stepped over it. Nyx walked *through* it and hissed. Halfway across the clearing they found the cairn. It sat where three paths met, knee-high, built of flat river stones stacked with real care. Around its base: a ring of candle stubs melted flat, dozens of them, wax pooled and re-pooled over years. A tarnished thimble. A pair of reading glasses with one lens gone. Three pound coins and a Victorian penny, green as pond water. A hair ribbon. A child's shoe, red, cracked, the buckle rusted to a lump. Eva knelt down beside it and didn't touch anything, which Rory was proud of her for. "People come here." "People *came* here," Nyx said. "That's not — that's not the same thing at all, is it." Eva sat back on her heels. "Rory. Some of this is *old*." Rory looked at the shoe for longer than she wanted to. Then she reached inside her collar and drew out the pendant. It hung there in her fingers, the crimson stone no bigger than her thumbnail, its little inner light steady and slow as a resting pulse. Cold. It had been warm three times in her life, and each time she'd learned something she couldn't unlearn about the world she lived in. Here, in the deepest strange place she had ever stood, it lay in her palm as inert as a bead of glass, and somehow that frightened her more than heat would have. Whatever this place was, it wasn't Hel. It wasn't anything the stone had been made to notice. "Nothing," she said. "Of course nothing." Nyx's voice moved to her other side. "That trinket sings for one door only. This is not a door. This is a *seam*." The Shade lifted one hand, and the flowers within a foot of it turned their heads toward the dark. "Hel is beneath. Fae is beside. Do you understand the difference?" "No." "Good. Certainty is what gets mortals eaten." They went on. The music thinned and dropped behind them, sulking. The flowers changed — poppies giving way to something white and trumpet-shaped, growing thicker, until the path became a corridor with walls to Rory's shoulders and she couldn't see her own feet. Twice she felt something move alongside her at knee height, keeping pace, unhurried, and both times when she stopped, it stopped. She did not tell Eva. Once, in a hollow oak leaning drunk over the trail, she saw a lattice of small pale bones arranged in a spiral, so neat it was unbearable, and she said nothing about that either. And then the flowers ended, all at once, in a circle of cropped green turf so perfect it looked mown, and the light in the clearing was moonlight — clean silver, cold, though there had been no moon in the violet sky a hundred paces back — and a woman was standing in the middle of it with her back to them, silver hair to her waist, absolutely still. Eva grabbed Rory's sleeve. Rory looked at the turf. Dew lay on it, heavy and silvered, and their own three sets of tracks were printed dark and obvious behind them, ugly as vandalism. Where the woman had walked, there was nothing at all. "Aurora Carter," said Isolde Varga, without turning around, "you have brought a shadow that cannot hide and a friend who cannot see, and you are eleven minutes late by your reckoning and four days early by mine." She tilted her head. "Which of us should apologise?"
