You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The gate at Sheen had been locked since dusk, so they went over it — Eva first, boots skidding on the wet iron, then Aurora, then nothing at all, because Nyx simply thinned into the railings' shadow and reassembled on the far side like smoke deciding to be a person again. "I hate when you do that," Eva whispered. "You hate the walking more." Nyx's voice arrived from somewhere behind Aurora's ear, though the shape of them stood ten feet ahead. "Three miles across open grass. In November." Frost crusted the bracken. Aurora's breath hung in front of her in ragged clouds, and the pendant under her jumper had gone from cool to blood-warm somewhere past the plantation, pressing against her sternum like a second, slower heart. She kept a hand over it. Through the wool, through her palm, she could feel it counting out a rhythm that was not hers. "It's getting hotter," she said. "Then we're close." The oaks came up out of the dark without warning — not a copse, not a stand, but eight trees spaced at intervals too even to be accidental, trunks so broad that Eva could have lain across one and not reached the far edge. No leaves. No branches, either, above a certain height; they'd been sheared flat, ancient wounds grown over into smooth grey caps, so the trees stood like pillars holding up nothing. Eva stopped ten feet short. "Those are stones." "They're trees." "Rory, look at them properly." Aurora looked. Bark that was bark until the eye slid sideways, and then it was granite veined with root, and then it was bark again, and the switching made a small hot pain behind her eyes. Frost coated the ground right up to the line between two of them, and stopped, as if scraped away with a blade. "Don't touch the trunks going through," Nyx murmured. "Don't speak your full name inside. If something offers you food, refuse politely. Refuse three times if they insist." "Three?" "Three." "What happens on the fourth?" Nyx's violet eyes drifted closer. "You accept." Eva laughed, and the laugh came out wrong, thin. "Brilliant. Great. Love that for us." Aurora stepped through first. The cold went out of the world like a switch thrown. Not warmth exactly — no sun, no fire — but the absence of any reason to be cold, air at the temperature of skin, so that she couldn't feel it entering her lungs at all and had to check she was still breathing. Sound went too. The distant grumble of the A308, the wind combing the grass, Eva's teeth chattering: all of it clipped off mid-note. What replaced it swelled slowly, the way your hearing returns after a loud concert. Water. Insects with no name. Something that could have been a choir three valleys away, or a kettle. "Oh," Eva said, coming through behind her. Wildflowers. Acres of them, knee-high, moon-white and violet and a blue so deep it read as black, all of them open, in November, at midnight, with no moon to open for. They gave off their own faint light, or reflected a light there was no source for, and the ground under them wasn't grass but moss deep enough to swallow a boot to the ankle. Aurora took a step and the moss exhaled beneath her — a soft, warm sigh of released air, and the smell it released was nectar and cut apple and, underneath, wet stone. "Where's the wall?" Eva turned in a slow circle. "Where's the — Rory, where's the park?" Behind them stood the eight oaks. Beyond the oaks there was more grove. Hills of flowers rolling away into a soft violet dark, and no fence, no city glow on the horizon, no horizon to speak of. "It folds," Nyx said. "The way a map folds. We're in the crease." "That's not an answer." "It's the only one that fits in your language." They went deeper. Aurora counted her paces out of habit and lost count at two hundred, not because she was distracted but because the numbers themselves kept slipping — she'd say ninety-one and hear herself say it, and then be at ninety-one again. She stopped counting. The pendant beat harder. The stream came first. It ran across their path, three feet wide, clear to a bed of pale pebbles, and it ran uphill. Not fast. A patient, unbothered climb up the slope towards the higher ground, chuckling over stones exactly as water should, doing everything right except direction. Eva crouched and put her fingers in it before Aurora could stop her. "It's warm," she breathed. "Rory, it's warm as bathwater. And look —" Under the surface, the pebbles had faces. Not carved. Worn, the way a coin wears, features half-erased by centuries of that gentle uphill current — a brow here, the suggestion of a mouth, a thousand of them, layered down into the dark of the bed. Aurora pulled Eva's hand out by the wrist. "Up. Now." "They're just stones—" "They're wearing away." They found the ribbons after the stream. A stand of birches, silver-barked, and every branch hung with fabric: strips of silk, of dyed wool, of nylon, of something that had been a school tie. Hundreds. Thousands. The oldest had rotted down to threads that were still, somehow, knotted. Beneath the nearest tree sat a single trainer, size ten, laces done up, the moss growing through the mesh in a slow green fist. "Offerings," Nyx said. "Or receipts," Aurora said. Eva had gone very quiet. She was holding her phone up, screen bright and obscene in that light. "It says twenty past nine." "We came over the gate at half eleven." "It says the fourteenth." "We came on the eleventh." "Yeah." Eva's thumb hovered. The date flickered — the fourteenth, the ninth, a number that had four digits in it — and she shoved the phone in her pocket and kept her hand there, pressed flat against her thigh. "Yeah. I'm going to stop looking at that." The choir sound resolved as they climbed. Not a choir. Moths — palm-sized, wings like stained glass held to a candle — rising off the flowers in clouds, and each wingbeat rang, a struck-glass note, so that the swarm made chords as it moved. One landed on Aurora's knuckle. It weighed nothing. Its wings, close up, showed a pattern she recognised and couldn't place until it opened them fully: the crescent scar on her left wrist, reproduced in gold, twice, once on each wing. She held very still. "Nyx." "I see it." "Is that normal?" "Nothing here is normal. Some of it is polite." Nyx's shadow-hand passed above the moth and it lifted off, ringing, and joined the others. "It was showing you it had been paying attention." At the top of the rise the flowers thinned into a bowl of short grey grass, and in the centre of the bowl grew a hawthorn bent double with white blossom, and under the hawthorn was a chair made of one continuous root, and around the chair, in the dust that lay soft as flour over the grass, were footprints. Aurora's. Eva's. Coming towards them, from the direction they had not yet walked. Eva made a small sound. "Don't," Aurora said, crouching, laying her palm beside the print that matched her own tread exactly. Still warm. "Don't panic yet. Nyx — do you leave prints?" "Never." "Then someone else does not, either." She looked at the chair, at the blossom drifting down onto it in no wind at all, and raised her voice to the empty grove. "We're here to ask a question. We haven't eaten anything. We haven't taken anything. And I'm not giving you my name." The hawthorn shivered. Somewhere below and behind them, the uphill stream changed its note.
