The rain had been falling on Ashcombe since Tuesday, and by Friday morning the river had swallowed the old footbridge. Detective Inspector Nora Vale parked beside the churchyard wall and sat there listening to water drum against the car roof. Somebody had found a body in the flooded meadow, and somebody else had already told every soul in the village. Twenty umbrellas crowded the narrow lane above the still water, black and shining like beetles gathered around something newly dead. Nora pushed through them, holding up her warrant card, saying nothing, and the wet murmuring closed up behind her again. The dead man lay face up in eight inches of brown water, wearing a good dinner jacket and no shoes. His hands were folded on his chest, arranged, as though someone had truly wanted him to look properly at peace. Nora crouched, feeling the cold seep through her trousers, and studied the very small neat hole above his left eyebrow. Behind her, a young constable said the name Edward Ashcombe aloud, and the whole village seemed to hold its breath. Rain kept falling, patient and thorough, washing away whatever evidence the killer had carelessly left behind in the wet grass.
