With her French heritage and a newly minted passion for landscape photography, she had spent the morning capturing the golden hues of the Midwest foliage. The bell above the cafe door jingled, and in walked Detective Hunter. At thirty-five, the former Marine still carried himself with a rigid, no-nonsense posture that made him stand out among the sleepy town’s usual patrons. He scanned the room, his eyes locking onto the stranger with the high-end camera. He crossed the floor and pulled out the chair opposite her without asking. Marie: "Oh! Pardon?" Hunter: "Ma'am. Detective Hunter. I need to ask you a few questions about what happened down by the orchard about an hour ago. My department got a report of a foreigner snapping photos right before old man Jenkins’ vintage tractor went missing. Care to explain?" Marie: "Mon Dieu... c'est incroyable. He pulled his department-issued phone from his pocket, glanced at the caller ID, and let out a heavy sigh. "Yeah, Chief? ... Yeah, I'm with her right now. ... What? Found it behind the grain elevator? Nobody stole it, Jenkins just forgot where he parked it after the cider tasting." Hunter stood up abruptly, sliding his phone back into his pocket. He looked down at Marie, who was clutching her camera tightly to her chest, looking up at him with wide, anxious eyes. Hunter: "Look, whatever you just said, forget it. False alarm.
