She didn't pack anything in the delivery box tonight. She steps off the kickstand. Mud sucks at the soles of her trainers with a wet, adhesive smack. The ancient oak standing stones loom out of the fog ahead, jagged monoliths grey as bone against the pitch-black timberline. Wildflowers carpet the clearing floor, glowing with a sickly, phosphorescent blue in the gloom instead of their usual daytime hues. The air tastes of copper and stale ozone. A twig snaps behind her. Deep in the wood. Too heavy for a squirrel, too light for a deer. Aurora spins around. Her bright blue eyes dart across the wall of ferns and brambles. Nothing moves. Just the mist coiling between the trunks like thin, grey fingers. She takes three steps toward the boundary stones. The temperature drops twenty degrees in a single stride. Her breath plumbs the dark in sudden white plumes. A rhythmic thud echoes from the centre of the grove. *Thump. Thump. Thump.* Like a giant pulse beating against the frozen mud. The silver chain burns hot. The pendant pulses against her sternum, syncing with the distant rhythm. She walks past the first oak monolith. The mud vanishes beneath her feet, replaced by smooth, flagstones slick with black slime. The canopy above blocks out the stars completely, weaving a tight, suffocating roof of branches. A low whisper slides past her ear. No words. Just the dry rustle of parchment rubbing against parchment. Aurora whips her head to the left. Straight shoulder-length black hair whips across her face. The darkness between two ancient trunks folds in on itself, a shadow detaching from the wood and gliding sideways into the deeper thicket. Her heart hammers against her ribs. She reaches down, her fingers catching the small crescent-shaped scar on her left wrist, pressing her thumbnail hard into the pale tissue until the sharp sting anchors her. "Who's there?" The words fall flat, smothered instantly by the heavy, damp air. The rhythmic thud stops. Silence drops over the grove, absolute and suffocating, ringing loud in her ears. Even the wind dies. A shadow stretches across the flagstones from behind her, long and thin and impossibly tall. It reaches past her boots, extending out into the clearing ahead. But there is no light source behind her. No moon. No streetlamps. Just the faint, sickly glow of the blue wildflowers. The shadow separates from the ground. It rises, curling upward into a three-dimensional mass of jagged edges and elongated limbs. Aurora doesn't look back. She breaks into a dead sprint toward the ring of stones, her boots splashing through puddles that weren't there a moment ago. Something wet and heavy drops from the canopy, landing squarely on the gravel path ten paces ahead of her. She skids to a halt, heels throwing up grit. The thing blocks the exit. It stands taller than the oak stones, skin stretched grey and translucent over visible ribs that heave with no breath. Its limbs bend at angles that defy bone. Long, black hair mats the surface of its featureless face, dripping thick, dark liquid onto the flagstones. The creature tilts its head ninety degrees to the left. A wet, cracking pop echoes through the clearing. Aurora backs away slowly, her shoulder blades hitting the rough bark of a standing stone. The pendant burns like a hot coal against her chest now, throbbing frantically in time with the creature's exposed, black heart. More shapes detach themselves from the fog around the perimeter of the clearing, dozens of them, sliding silently out of the bracken, blocking every gap between the ancient trees. The creature in front of her opens a mouth that splits its face from jaw to ear, revealing rows of needle-thin teeth, and inhales the freezing air with a long, rattling hiss.
