You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

Two people who parted on complicated terms are forced together again when one shows up unannounced at the other's flat. There's history between them — attraction, hurt, and things left unsaid. Write the scene from the moment the door opens. Use the codex entries above as your world reference for characters and setting. The door opened on the third deadbolt. Rory hadn't heard anyone come up the stairs over the curry house extractor fan and Ptolemy yowling to be fed, which meant whoever was on the other side knew how to move quiet. She had the chain still on, one hand braced on the doorframe, the other already reaching for the chipped mug on Eva's hall table that would make a shit weapon but was better than nothing. It was Lucien. Rain beaded on the shoulders of his charcoal suit and darkened the platinum of his slicked-back hair. He was leaning lightly on the ivory handle of his cane, and for a half second her brain did the stupid, misfiring thing it always did with him and catalogued him like evidence: tailored seams, rain, that ridiculous cane, heterochromatic eyes, one amber, one flat black, both fixed on her face. "Rory," he said. His voice hadn't changed. Low, French-edged, like he was amused at his own expense. She didn't take the chain off. "You're kidding me." "I did knock." "You knocked at Eva's flat. Which is not your flat. Which you should not know I'm in." "Eva's place is hardly a secret. The flat on Brick Lane with three deadbolts and more paper than IKEA." He glanced past her shoulder at the living room where every surface was, as always, covered in books and scrolls and research notes, the air smelling faintly of cumin from downstairs and old paper. "May I come in? You are letting the rain in." "You are the rain," she said, but she thumbed the chain out of its track because cool-headed was her job description and because Ptolemy had chosen that exact moment to wind himself around Lucien's polished shoe and purr. He stepped inside and Rory had to move back to make room, which put them too close in the cramped entry. Shoulder-length black hair still damp from washing earlier stuck to her neck. She was in Eva's too-big sweatpants and a vest top, no bra, and she folded her arms instantly, feeling her left wrist pull where the small crescent-shaped scar caught the hall light. Lucien closed the door behind him. He did not do the bolts. He knew better than to lock her in. "Four months," she said. "One hundred and twenty-one days," he said, and then winced at himself. "You are counting differently, I see." "I wasn't counting at all." "No," he said, too gently. "You were not." That was the hurt, right there, neat and surgical. The last time she'd seen him he'd been bleeding onto the floor of the back room at Silas' bar, his ivory-handled cane snapped open and the thin blade inside slick with something that wasn't entirely blood, telling her to leave him there, to take the sigil and run. She'd run. Of course she'd run. She was intelligent, she was quick out-of-the-box thinking, she was delivery girl for the Golden Empress by day and Eva's practical friend by night, she knew how to follow instructions in a crisis. Then she hadn't heard from him for a week, then two. Then he'd sent a single text in French. Then nothing. She had assumed he was dead. Half-demon or not, people bled out. "You look alive," she said, because 'I thought you died' felt too large to get out through her teeth. "I am industrious that way," he said. He set his cane against the wall. Water dripped off it onto Eva's rug. "Eva said you were staying here while Silas fixes the pipes above your place. She gave me your—" "Eva gave you nothing. Eva likes you even less than I do." Lucien smiled, but it was tired. "She gave me a lecture. And then, reluctantly, your location. Under duress. I told her the wards on the building below the restaurant failed. Which they did." The curry smell and the stacks of books suddenly felt airless. Rory unfolded her arms to grab the cat before he tried to climb Lucien's suit. "What wards?" "The ones we set after the Avaros incident. The ones keyed to you." He said it matter-of-factly, fixer and information broker to the end, even when his suit was wet and his amber eye was bloodshot. "Something tripped them this afternoon. Not broke — tasted. Like someone looking for your scent. I thought you would want to know." She stared at him. "So you show up here, unannounced, after ghosting me for four months, to tell me someone's sniffing around? You have a phone, Lucien. You know how to use it in four separate languages." "I know," he said. "I tried. You blocked me." "I did not block you." "You did. Quite creatively. My number returns a message about male pattern baldness cures." That snagged a laugh out of her before she could swallow it. It had been Eva's idea. She pressed her knuckles to her mouth. Ptolemy squirmed in her arms. Lucien watched her, and the amusement bled out of his face. "Can we sit? For two minutes. Then I will go back into the dramatic ether from whence I came." There was nowhere to sit that wasn't covered. Rory cleared a pile of annotated printouts off the sagging futon with one hip and sat, cat in her lap. Lucien took the floor, which was so unlike him — tailored charcoal suits did not sit on floors — that her chest did a stupid thump. He didn't touch her. He put his hands on his knees. His knuckles were scarred. "Why did you tell me to leave?" she asked, the question that had been sitting unsaid since that night on the floor. "Because you would have died if you stayed," he said simply. "You don't get to make that call for me." "No. But I did." He looked down at the scar on her left wrist, that little pale crescent from when she was eight and tried to catch a kitchen knife. He had once traced it with his thumb and told her she collected edges. "You were twenty-four and you worked part-time delivering noodles and you had no business in a demon negotiation. You had your ridiculous cool head and your ridiculous bravery and you were going to get yourself killed to prove you could keep up." "I kept up," she said, voice low. "I know." His mismatched eyes lifted to hers — bright blue to amber and black. "You always do. That is rather the problem, Aurora." No one had called her Aurora in months. Everyone called her Rory. Laila was what her mother called her when she was angry. Malphora was a name that belonged in a file. Aurora was something he said when he wasn't thinking about being clever. Ptolemy jumped down with an offended flick of his tail and went to attack a scroll. Lucien exhaled. "I was in Antwerp for three weeks. I could not travel. The blade was poisoned. By the time I could get a message that was not 'I am dying in a very chic Belgian hotel,' you were gone to Wales. Your father — Brendan — said you did not wish to speak to Frenchmen named Luc." "I was with my mum," she said. "Not hiding." "I know. I asked Yu-Fei. She told me you left Evan's things on the curb and took the train. She told me you needed space. So I gave you space until space became a warded building failing while you were inside it." He was still on the floor. He was close enough that she could see the rain on his eyelashes, the faint line where his human mother had given him a mouth that smiled easily and his demon father had given him eyes that never quite did. Rory reached out before she told herself not to. Her fingers brushed the lapel of his suit, not quite touching skin. The wool was wet and expensive and cold. "You could have died," she whispered. It was the other unsaid thing. "I did try not to," he said, and that was the closest he'd ever gotten to an apology that wasn't wrapped in silk. She let her hand drop to his knee, palm flat. He went very still, as if any movement would spook her. "Say it properly," she said. His black eye seemed to swallow light. "Rory. I am sorry I told you to run. I am sorry I did not come after you faster. I am sorry I am still, inappropriately, in love with you after you blocked my number with hair loss spam." The words landed like a weight in the small, book-crowded room. Up close he smelled like rain and the faint incense that always clung to his cane. "I didn't block you because I stopped—" She stopped. Started again. "I thought if you were going to decide I was too human for your world, I should decide back." "I never thought you were too human," he said. "I thought my world was too cruel for you. There is a difference." Rory looked at him — platinum hair mussed for once, suit ruined, eyes both locked on hers like she was the only clear thing in the flat — and made a quick, out-of-the-box decision, the kind that had always kept her alive. She slid off the futon onto the floor with him, knees knocking his, her straight black hair falling forward to curtain them both. "Two minutes is up," she said. "Is it?" His voice was rough. "Do you have to go back into the ether?" He lifted a hand, careful, and tucked her hair behind her ear. His thumb grazed the line of her jaw. "Not if you will have me here." The three deadbolts held the door. The cat knocked over a stack of notes. Downstairs, someone dropped a pan and shouted in Bengali. And in Eva's tiny flat above the curry house, with rain drying on his shoulders and her scarred wrist resting against his, Rory leaned in to close the distance she hadn't been counting but had felt every single day anyway.
