You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

A detective is pursuing a suspect through rain-soaked city streets at night. The chase takes them from the street level down into an underground market. Only include the prose of the scene without any markdown or commentary.

The rain had turned Soho into a black mirror. Harlow Quinn stood under the awning of a closed newsagent and watched the green neon sign across the street stutter against the wet brick. The Raven's Nest. The RAVE stuttered twice before the N caught. Green light bled down into puddles and across the shoulders of the few drunks still moving at one in the morning. She'd been there since ten. Her coat was soaked through at the seams despite the awning. Water tracked down her closely cropped salt-and-pepper hair and cut along the line of her sharp jaw. She didn't move to wipe it. On her left wrist, the face of her worn leather watch had fogged. 01:14. Eighteen years in the Met had taught her how to be still, how to hold a stake with military precision while the rest of the city got tired, got careless, got wet. The door to the bar opened and threw a slab of amber light onto the pavement. The man who came out was not Silas. Quinn knew him from the photo clipped to the incident file. Tomás Herrera. Twenty-nine. Five-ten. Former NHS paramedic, license revoked after he'd been caught shooting something that wasn't in the BNF formulary into a patient with a stab wound that wouldn't stop bleeding black smoke. Olive skin, short curly dark brown hair plastered flat now by the rain. And, as he shoved his hands into his pockets and glanced once up toward Oxford Street, the glint of a Saint Christopher medallion at his throat. He was supposed to be off-the-books medical for Silas's clique. Quinn suspected he was more than that. She suspected a lot of things that didn't fit into a charging sheet. Herrera didn't head for the high street. He went north, fast, shoulders hunched, moving like a man who knew he was being watched but didn't know from where. Quinn let him get half a block before she pushed off the wall. She kept to the opposite side of Old Compton Street at first, boots silent where she could make them, loud where she couldn't. The rain swallowed most of it. Herrera's pace increased. By the time they hit Shaftesbury Avenue he was no longer pretending he wasn't running. Quinn swore under her breath and broke into a run. "Tomás Herrera! Metropolitan Police! Stop!" He didn't stop. His olive skin flashed pale under a streetlamp as he looked back over his shoulder. His warm brown eyes found hers for half a second, wide, and then he was gone around a corner, the scar running along his left forearm catching white in the lamplight as his sleeve rode up. She chased him through the shit end of Theatreland, where the bins were overflowing and the pavement stank of old grease even in the rain. Her breath came even, controlled. Inhale four, hold four, out four. Her partner had always mocked her for counting. DS Morris had been a big man with a laugh that took up a whole car. Three years dead. Three years ago they'd followed a kid down into the service tunnels under Elephant and Castle and Morris had come out wrong, if you could say he'd come out at all. The report had said cardiac event. The coroner had looked at her like she was crazy when she tried to describe the cold spot, the way Morris's shadow had lagged behind him by a half-second. That had been the first unexplained case she'd stopped trying to explain. Herrera was fast for a medic. He vaulted a chain across a service alley and hit the wet cobbles running, his shoes spraying black water. Quinn went over the chain without breaking stride, her knees jarring with the landing. The alley opened onto a side road. Camden was already a bruise on the skyline ahead, too far north to be a casual walk. He was heading for something specific. She gained on him coming up past Goodge Street, close enough now that she could see the water beading on the back of his coat, the way his medallion bounced against his chest. He cut sharp left into a dead service lane that ran behind the old Northern line works. It ended in a brick wall tagged to hell and a rusted metal door set into the ground at a forty-five-degree angle, half-buried under weeds and rain-slick pallets. A Tube maintenance hatch. Decommissioned. Welded shut, by the looks of the official signage. The kind of door no one was supposed to be able to open. Herrera didn't slow. He dropped to one knee, yanked something from his pocket on a dirty string, and pressed it to the center of the door. Quinn skidded to a stop ten feet back, one hand going to her belt where her baton should have been, the other up. "Hands! Let me see your hands!" It wasn't a key. It was a knucklebone, yellowed and drilled through, tied with twine. Bone token. The words floated up from a briefing note someone in Intel had stapled to her file and told her was a joke. For the underground market. For the thing that moves every full moon. The rain hammered his hair into dark curls. He looked up at her, panting. Up close the scar on his forearm was thick, ropey, the kind you got from a knife that went deep and sideways. "Detective, don't," he said, his accent heavier with the exertion. Sevilla under London rain. "You don't want to go down there. Por favor. It's not for you." "Then stop and get down on your knees." He shook his head. "I can't. He'll die if I don't. He's just a kid." The bone token pulsed once. It wasn't a trick of the neon, which was miles behind them now. It gave off a dull, sickly light, and the welds on the metal door cracked with a sound like ice breaking. Cold air breathed out from the seam, air that smelled like ozone and turned earth and something sweet and rotten, like incense left too long in a church. Below, Quinn heard noise. Not Tube noise. Voices. Low haggling. A laugh that didn't have enough joints in it. The smell of banned alchemical substances you couldn't name, copper and burnt sugar, wafting up. The Veil Market. The hidden black market in the abandoned Tube station beneath Camden that sold enchanted goods and information, the one every constable said was an urban legend to scare probies. Only it wasn't legend. It moved on the full moon. Tonight the moon was full and swollen behind the clouds, and the rain was coming down straight through it. Herrera pulled the door open another foot. A flickering amber light showed wet concrete steps descending into dark. Quinn's hand dropped to her watch without thinking, thumb finding the worn leather, the familiar groove where her thumbnail had worried it for eighteen years. This was the threshold. She could call it in. Wait for backup. Do it by the book. Write up that she'd lost visual in the rain. Go home and file the medical file under unsolved and try not to see Morris's face when his shadow had detached. Or she could follow a former paramedic with a Saint Christopher around his neck and a bone key down into a market that wasn't supposed to exist, after a kid who was probably already dead or worse. Military precision had kept her alive, but it had never found her the answers. Herrera slipped through the gap, the medallion at his neck catching the amber light one last time. Quinn swore again, louder this time, and ducked down after him, into the cold breath of the station, pulling the rusted door shut over her head as the rain kept falling on the empty alley behind her.
