You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

A character is alone in a strange, isolated place at night. They came here for a reason, but something feels off from the moment they arrive. The wrongness builds slowly — sounds that shouldn't be there, things that move at the edge of vision, a growing certainty that they are not alone. Build tension through restraint, not through gore. Use the codex entries above as your world reference for the character and setting. Only include the prose of the scene without any markdown or commentary. </instructions>

The Heartstone burned against her skin. Rory tucked her chin to her collar and looked down. The pendant sat dull under her t-shirt, thumbnail-sized, silver chain dark with sweat. The crimson at its centre throbbed once. Twice. A low heat spread from it across her sternum. She stood at the edge of Richmond Park, beyond the last path light, where the fence gave way to bracken and the old oaks took over. The air smelled of wet bark and turned earth and diesel from the road far behind her. She pulled the strap of her backpack higher on her shoulder. Inside, her phone sat dead. No signal. No light. She had come here because the parcel had no address. Only coordinates. Scrawled on the back of a Golden Empress takeaway slip in black biro. 51.4415, -0.2740. Plus three words: BRING IT BACK. The stone in her pocket — or the thing that pretended to be a stone — had arrived in a jiffy bag that morning. No return address. Inside, a single river-smooth chunk of dark glass wrapped in brown paper, warm as a fresh mug, humming against her palm. Her left wrist ached around the crescent scar. She had thought of the Fae Grove. She had not been there in months. Rory stepped between two oaks. The bark of each bore deep grooves, lichen-crusted, the ancient standing stones of the grove dressed as trees to fool walkers. The air changed when she crossed the line. The wind from the park cut off. The smell of diesel vanished. The quiet that replaced it was not forest quiet. It had weight. "Okay. Fine. I'm here." Her voice fell flat. It did not carry. The clearing opened ahead, wrong in its dimensions. The oaks ringed it too tight, trunks too close shoulder to shoulder. The grass underfoot held no path, no footprint. The wildflowers should have been closed for night. They were not. They stood open, white and sickly yellow, heads up, facing nothing. No moon. The sky above the clearing showed a bruised purple that did not match the night sky outside. The pendant pulsed against her chest in time with something else. She set her backpack down. The zipper snagged. She tugged it open with her teeth and pulled out the dark glass. Cold. Then hot. It pulsed once against her fingers, and the Heartstone under her shirt answered it, a hard thud of heat. She placed the dark stone on the grass. It sank. A millimetre. As if the ground breathed it in. Rory straightened. She wiped her hand on her jeans. The heat stayed on her skin, an after-image. "That's it, then. We're done. You can have it back." No answer. The flowers did not move. The air did not move. Then a sound. Behind her. A footstep where no path existed. A soft press of earth, separate from the wind. Leaves shifted. Rory turned. The gap between the oaks where she had entered showed nothing but black, and through that black, the faint orange spill of London beyond that should have been there was gone. "Hello?" Her mouth dried. She took a step back towards the centre. Her boots found no purchase for a second, as if the grass had lifted. The wrongness sharpened. The oak trunks did not line up. When she looked straight at one, it stood solid. At the corner of her eye, it bent. It leaned inward. It had too many shadows. The Heartstone flared hot. Rory hissed and yanked it out from under her shirt. The crimson gem lit from within, throwing red light across her knuckles, across the grass, across the small dark stone now half-swallowed. The light did not reach the treeline. The dark ate it three feet out. Another sound. To her left this time. A breath that was not her breath. Long. It fogged the cold air in a plume that hung too high, above her head, where no mouth should be. Rory spun. Her straight black hair whipped her cheek. She grabbed at it. "You think this is funny?" Silence answered. Then a rustle, direct behind her, close enough to touch her backpack. She whirled again. The backpack was gone. The grass where it had been lay flat, pressed down in a perfect rectangle. Her phone. Her keys. Her water. The pendant swung and burned. The dark glass on the ground pulsed faster now. The red light of the Heartstone and the dull throb of the other thing beat out of sync, then synced, then beat out of sync again. The wildflowers turned. Not with wind. Every head, all at once, swivelled a fraction to point at her. White petals opened wider. A giggle moved through the oaks. It did not belong to a child. It did not belong to a throat. It was bark splitting. It was a branch under weight. Rory's knees unlocked. She backed towards the opposite side of the ring, away from where she had entered, where the oaks pressed tightest. Her shoulder hit wood. Or what felt like wood. It gave a little under her weight, spongy, warm. She jerked away. "Stop it." The dark glass sank deeper. A crack opened around it. Not in the earth. In the air above the earth. A line of deeper night, no thicker than a hair, vertical. Cold poured out of it. The kind of cold that made her teeth ache. The pendant kicked like a live thing against her chest. From the corner of her sight, something tall detached itself from a trunk and stepped, not forward, but sideways, into the gap between two trees where there had been no gap before. Too long in the limb. Too many joints. Its head brushed the low branches though none of the oaks had low branches. Rory did not look at it. She kept her eyes on the crack, on the dark stone. Her breath came in short bursts that did not fog. The cold had swallowed that too. "Take it and let me go." The thing between the trees tilted. The movement dragged the light wrong. The flowers strained towards it. The crack widened. A finger's width. Inside, she saw not earth, not root, but a long hall or throat, lit with that same crimson glow from far down, and movement down there, many things moving, restless, pressing to get up. The dark glass fell. It dropped straight through. The crack snapped wider, hungry. Air rushed past her ears towards it. Her t-shirt pulled. The grass rippled and tore, wildflower heads ripped from stems, spinning towards the dark. The pendant chain cut into the back of her neck. Rory lunged. She grabbed the pendant with both hands, cold silver biting her scar, and yanked. The chain snapped. The Heartstone blazed white-hot in her fist. She slammed it down onto the edge of the crack. The grove screamed. Not a voice. All of it. Bark and leaf and flower and the thing between the trees. Light burst. Red on red, crimson against black, and for a half second the clearing was true again — oak and grass and night and the distant orange of London beyond, and her backpack right where she had left it, zipper open. The crack buckled. Something on the other side grabbed the edge. Fingers, long and bare to the bone and not bone, wrapped around the lip of the world and held on.
