My horse, a majestic stallion named Thunder, galloped across the open field. The wind whipped through my hair as I rode towards the castle gates. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the stone walls. I could see the banners of the kingdom fluttering in the breeze.

<nc-section data-title="Version 1: The Greeting at the Stables" data-color="red"> The stable yard stank of horse sweat and fresh dung, and Frederick was trying very hard not to look as green as he felt as he led Thunder in by the reins. "You must be the new squire," a voice boomed from the shadow of the stable doors. Frederick turned. A knight stood there, broad-shouldered and weathered, his beard more grey than brown, his surcoat bearing the faded hawk of the castle guard. He held two buckets easily, one in each hand, as if they weighed nothing. "Sir Roland, I presume?" Frederick stammered, remembering the steward's instructions. "Presume less, work more," Roland said, but his eyes crinkled. He set the buckets down and looked Thunder over with a practiced eye. "Fine animal. You've ridden hard to get here. And you - Frederick, yes? - you look half-starved and wholly nervous." "I am ready to train, Sir." "Good. Then your training begins now. Stall for that beast, water, brush him down properly, and then you can find some food for yourself. Squires who can't care for their horses don't get to become knights. Come on, boy." </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 2: Sir Roland's Welcome" data-color="green"> Thunder was still breathing hard when Frederick reached the stables, the great stone building humming with the soft nickering of warhorses and the bustle of grooms. A man was waiting there, leaning against a post with his arms crossed. He wore no armor, only a simple padded gambeson and boots worn thin from years of use, but there was no mistaking the authority in his stance. His hair was cut short, his face kind beneath a close-trimmed beard. "You would be Frederick," he said warmly. Frederick hastily bowed, nearly tangling himself in Thunder's reins. "Yes, my lord. Are you..." "Sir Roland. Master of this unruly yard and, it seems, your new master as well." Roland stepped forward and clasped Frederick's shoulder, steadying him. His grip was firm. "The steward sent word. A young squire from the low villages, come to serve. Welcome to Castle Aldermere." "Thank you, Sir," Frederick said, relief flooding his voice. Roland chuckled and took Thunder's reins from him, patting the stallion's dark neck. "He's a beauty. You have an eye for horseflesh, I'll give you that. Come, let's get him settled. On the way, you can tell me why you left your mother's farm to chase swords and dragons." </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 3: First Inspection" data-color="blue"> Frederick dismounted just outside the stables, his legs stiff from three days in the saddle. The courtyard was already dimming with dusk, and lanterns were being lit along the stable eaves. From within, a knight emerged leading a massive grey destrier. The knight was tall, even without his helm, his plate polished despite the hour, a crimson cloak fastened at his throat. He stopped short when he saw Frederick. "Squire?" he asked, his tone sharp, assessing. Frederick straightened as best he could. "Frederick, son of Tomas. Reporting for training, Sir Roland." Sir Roland's gaze swept over him — the mud-spattered boots, the borrowed sword hanging too low on his hip, the way he clutched the reins too tight. "Hm," Roland said. He circled Frederick once, much as he would a horse he intended to buy. "Your horse is lathered. You rode him too hard on the final hill. Your sword is a butcher's blade, not a knight's. And you stand like a stable boy caught stealing." Frederick's face burned. "But," Roland continued, handing his own destrier's reins to him as well, "you arrived before nightfall, as ordered. That is more than the last three managed. So there may be something to you yet. Put both horses in the last two stalls. Rub them down. If I see a single streak, you will sleep in there with them. Understood?" "Yes, Sir Roland!" "Then begin." </nc-section>
