You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The standing stones weren't on any map of Richmond Park. Rory knew the park well enough from delivery shortcuts, the way you could cut from Roehampton Gate to Sheen without hitting traffic. She knew where the deer liked to bed down and which paths turned to mud in November. She did not know these oaks. They were too thick, for one thing. Four of them in a rough circle, bark black with age and slick as if wet, though it hadn't rained. Their roots broke the ground in gnarled arches, stitching themselves together. No birds sat in them. Isolde stood between two of them waiting, though Rory hadn't seen her move there. "You're late," Rory said. Her breath puffed white. It was December and the sun had already dropped behind the hill. "And you could have mentioned the Blair Witch entrance." Isolde's silver hair reached her waist and caught what little light was left, making it look lit from within. Her eyes were pale lavender, strange and unfocused, as if she were looking just past Rory's shoulder. "Late is a story time tells itself," she said. "And early is its jealous sister. You are here precisely when the door remembers you." Rory rubbed her left wrist without thinking, thumb finding the small crescent-shaped scar there. The pendant under her jacket pulsed once, a dull throb of heat against her sternum. Nyx detached themself from the shadow of the largest oak. One moment it was just shade, the next it had height and shape, nearly a foot taller than Rory, edges still smudging into the dark. Their eyes lit, faint violet. "You feel it," they whispered, and their voice came like wind through dead leaves, close to her ear even from ten feet away. "The Heartstone?" Rory pulled the silver chain out. The stone, roughly the size of a thumbnail, glowed with a deep crimson inner light. It was warm now, warmer than it had been on the street. "It's freaking out. I thought you said the Grove was Fae-touched. Not Hel." Isolde smiled, and it did not quite reach her eyes. "All doors are kin. They gossip in the walls. This one has listened to both sides for a very long time." She turned, and though the ground was soft with leaf rot, she left no prints at all. "Will you enter, Aurora Carter? Or will you stand outside and name the door until it closes?" Rory glanced at Nyx. The Shade inclined their head, solidifying a little more, the semblance of a long coat made of night settling around their shoulders. "Together," Nyx breathed. Rory tucked the pendant back under her shirt and put her hand to the moonsilver at her belt instead. The Fae-forged blade Isolde had given her two weeks ago was always cold, even through the sheath. The cold steadied her. "Okay," she said. "Together." She stepped between the oaks. The air shimmered. It wasn't metaphor. A faint distortion rippled across her vision like heat haze off summer pavement, only vertical, hanging between the trunks. For a half second she could see it clearly — the Veil itself, thin here to gauze. And then she passed through and it clung to her skin like cobwebs before snapping. Cold shot up through the soles of her shoes and vanished. The sounds of London — the distant A3, a dog barking, a plane — cut out as if someone had closed a very heavy door. Rory stumbled. The ground on the other side was not ground. Moss covered everything, but not the short cropped moss of the park. This was deep, springy, inches thick, glowing faintly green in the dusk. When she put her weight down it compressed and then sighed back up, leaving no mark of her boot, same as Isolde's feet left nothing. Wildflowers pushed through it everywhere, impossible. Foxglove and bluebells and little white stars she didn't know the names of, all open at once in December, all blooming year-round because no one had told them to stop. The sky above was wrong. It was still evening, but the stars were too many and too close, and there was no amber wash of light pollution. The air smelled like honeysuckle and cold water and ozone, like just before a storm. "Oh," she said, before she could stop herself. "Oh, shit." Nyx came through behind her, and they did not so much step as pour, shadow stretching long and then snapping back into their humanoid form. They went still immediately, their faintly glowing eyes wide. "It remembers," they whispered, and there was wonder in that wind-voice for the first time since Rory had known them. "Aldric came here once. Before the bones of London. Before—" They broke off, their form flickering incorporeal, then solid again, as if the Grove was pulling at their edges. The clearing was larger than the circle of oaks should have allowed. At its center a pool reflected the crowded stars even though the sky was clouded. Ancient roots formed natural benches, natural arches. Everything was too crisp, too detailed, as though the world had been turned up a notch. Rory's bright blue eyes watered from it. Isolde was already ahead, moving without sound. "You look with the wrong eyes, Rory-laila," she said, using the nickname Rory hated and loved in equal measure. "You count petals and forget to ask why they opened for you." "Maybe because we didn't trample them on the way in?" Rory muttered, but she followed. Her straight black hair, shoulder-length and still damp from the day's drizzle, kept catching on the still air. She pushed it back and felt the pendant throb again, slower this time, a cat's purr against her collarbone. The closer they got to the pool, the warmer it got. Not the air — the blade. Or rather, the absence of cold that had become normal. The Fae-forged dagger at her hip was warming for the first time, its habitual chill receding, and in the low light it began to give off its own faint luminescence, a thread of moonlight along the leaf-shaped edge. "Isolde—" "The iron you carry never belonged to winter," Isolde said without turning. She knelt at the pool's edge. Her reflection didn't quite match her movement; it lagged by a heartbeat. "A gift cuts the giver as much as the given. Feel that and be less afraid." Rory stopped at the edge. The water was perfectly clear and perfectly black at once. No leaves floated on it despite the trees. Inside it she saw not the sky but something else, a fleeting glimpse of warm amber light, sprawling hills stitched with vines and smoke rising from vast kitchens. A place of endless tables. Dymas. The Heartstone had come from there, the Seer had told her once, from Gluttony itself where helbound chefs traded recipes like sins. The vision in the water made her mouth water and her stomach turn over. She jerked back. "There is a rift here," Nyx said softly. They had not approached the pool. Their tall form was hunched slightly, as if pressed down by the open sky. Living shadow rippled off them in tatters, absorbed instantly by the brighter shadows under the roots. "A small tear. Old. Fed by both sides. That is why your stone sings." Isolde trailed her fingers over the water without breaking it. Where she touched, the wildflowers along the bank leaned toward her hand. "A door that settled down and grew a garden," she said. "I was exiled for telling mortals when their doors would open. Now I tend one that never closes." Rory lowered herself carefully to the moss. It was warm. That was the most unnerving thing so far. The cold December air on her face and warm, living ground under her palms, breathing. She could feel Isolde's riddle working itself loose in her head. She couldn't lie, the half-Fae. So when she said all doors are kin, she meant there was actually Hel underneath here, too. Close enough for a pendant forged in Dymas to feel its old sky. "We shouldn't stay long," she said, and her practical voice sounded very loud. Cool-headed, that was what Eva always called her. Quick out-of-the-box thinking. Right now thinking outside the box felt like a terrible idea when the box was at least in normal space-time. "You said time moves differently. An hour could be—" "Minutes or days," Isolde finished, pleased, as if Rory had recited a poem correctly. "What will you do with the minutes you steal, Aurora? You who fled to London over three hundred miles to unmake one man's hands on your life? Will you unmake this place too?" Rory's hand went to her wrist again, to that small crescent scar from a childhood fall her mother still told stories about. Jennifer Carter would have had a fit if she knew where her daughter was standing. "No," she said. "I just want to know if it's safe. The Wardens monitor rift points. If this one is active—" "The Wardens monitor what screams," Nyx murmured, drifting closer at last, their violet gaze fixed on the pool. In its surface, Rory could see no reflection of them at all. "This one only whispers." From somewhere deeper in the Grove, beyond the pool, beyond the trees that hadn't been there a second ago, a chime rang. No wind. A low, clear note like a glass bell struck once. All three of them froze. The wildflowers shivered. Isolde stood in one smooth motion, leaving no footprint, leaving no ripple on the water. Her pale lavender eyes snapped fully into focus for the first time that night, locking on to Rory. "Ah," she said softly, and her riddle-voice cracked. "Another guest has remembered the way in. One who does not know how to ask permission. You brought the blade, little Laila. Perhaps you will need to cut." The Fae-forged dagger at Rory's belt went cold again all at once, so cold it burned through her jeans.
