You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

Rain hammered Soho. It turned the pavement black and slick and threw the light back at the sky. Harlow Quinn stood under the awning opposite The Raven's Nest. The green neon sign above the entrance bled colour into the puddles, a sick electric smear that pulsed against the brick. Her leather watch ticked against her wrist. The left one. The rain drummed on the awning and ran off in a sheet. Her hair, salt-and-pepper and cropped close to the scalp, held the water and let it run down the sharp line of her jaw. Her hands stayed in the pockets of her coat. Her posture cut straight through the crowd despite the weather, military precision under plain clothes. The door to the Nest opened and spilled yellow light and low music onto the street for a second. Tomás Herrera slipped out. He wore a dark hoodie despite the cold. The hood stayed down. Rain struck his short curly hair and his olive skin shone wet. He checked the street, left, right, his hand going to his chest where the chain of his medallion hung. He moved fast. Harlow pushed off the wall. Tomás crossed Old Compton Street at a diagonal, feet splashing through standing water. He did not look back again. He turned his shoulders and cut between two taxis and vanished into a narrow passage that fed toward Shaftesbury Avenue. Harlow followed. The crowd thickened. Umbrellas knocked. The rain made everything loud. "Tomás Herrera! Stop!" Heads turned. Tomás did not turn. His stride broke into a run. Harlow ran. Her boots struck the wet flagstones. Water sprayed from her heels. She cut past a couple under one umbrella and shoved through a knot of smokers huddled outside a kebab shop. The smell of fat and vinegar and wet concrete hit her nose. Music thumped out of doorways. The traffic on Charing Cross Road was a river of white and red lights refracted through the curtain of rain. Tomás ran with his elbows tight and his head low. He vaulted a barrier outside the Tube entrance and hit the other side running. A bus braked. Horns blared. "You need to stop running!" Tomás glanced back then, just enough to show the warm brown of his eyes, wide and white around the edge. Rain tracked down his face. "Detective, you don't want this!" Harlow closed the gap by two metres. Her breath burned in her throat. She reached for the radio at her hip, then left it. No backup. No time. Tomás ducked left into a service alley behind the bookshops. The alley was a throat of brick and dripping pipes and stacked crates. A single bare bulb threw a cone of dirty light that made the rain visible as silver wire. His feet slapped through water that ran ankle deep where the drains had choked. Harlow entered the alley at full speed and her shoulder clipped a drainpipe. Cold water sluiced down her collar. She kept running. Tomás knocked over a crate. Wood splintered and bottles rolled. Harlow hurdled them. "You patch them up! I know you do!" He answered without stopping. "You don't know what you talk about!" The alley opened out onto a small courtyard that had no business existing here, hemmed by the backs of buildings. In the centre stood a disused maintenance hatch for the Underground, its iron wheel rusted, its concrete surround marked with symbols chalked fresh despite the rain. They did not wash off. A circle with three cuts through it. Harlow recognised the shape from case photos. From Morris's notebook before they pulled his body out of the Thames three years ago. Tomás dropped to his knees beside the hatch. He fumbled in his hoodie pocket and pulled out something small and yellowed and smooth. A bone token, pierced through the centre, roughly cut. "Tomás, hands where I see them!" Tomás pressed the token against the iron and twisted the wheel. The hatch gave with a shriek of metal that set Harlow's teeth on edge. A gust of warm air rushed out of the dark below, air that smelled of incense and damp earth and old copper and fried meat, impossible for an abandoned service tunnel. From somewhere down there came voices, low and many, and a distant bell. Tomás looked up at her. The scar on his left forearm showed pale against his wet skin where his sleeve had ridden up, a raised ridge from a knife attack. His Saint Christopher medallion had slipped out over his hoodie and caught the bulb light. "You go back now. You go back to your station and write that you lost me in the rain." Harlow had her weapon out. Not raised, but out, both hands on it, rain running down the barrel. Water streamed off her chin. Her watch face had fogged. "Open that hatch any wider and I charge you with obstruction. Step away from it." Tomás shook his head. He swung his legs into the black. "That charge won't mean anything where this goes." He dropped. No splash. No grunt of impact. The sound of his landing got swallowed. Harlow moved to the edge and stared down. The hatch did not lead to a maintenance shaft. The iron ladder fell away into a different space entirely. Far below, maybe fifteen feet down, the rungs ended not on concrete but on broken tile, a platform from another century. Beyond that, light moved. Lanterns and string bulbs and cookfires. The abandoned Tube station beneath Camden, though this entrance stood miles from Camden. The space breathed. She saw stalls cobbled from scaffolding and tarpaulin and old train carriages cut open. She saw people, or things shaped as people, moving between them. The air that rose was too warm for November. It carried the stink of alchemical smoke, sharp and sweet, the iron tang of blood, the reek of something charred that was not wood. The Veil Market. It shifted every full moon. It required a bone token. And Tomás Herrera had just walked into it as if he held a season ticket. A hand-painted board nailed beside the ladder read in market marker: NO LAW. NO CROWN. NO REFUND. Under it someone had scrawled newer chalk: COPS = PIGS FOR SLAUGHTER. Laughter drifted up from below. Then a scream cut short. "Detective!" Tomás's voice echoed up the shaft, hoarse and strained. He stood on the platform below, his face tipped up, rain falling past Harlow and vanishing before it reached him. "You can't follow! They see that badge, you die! I die!" Harlow's grip tightened on the hatch wheel. The metal bit cold into her palms. The green neon from The Raven's Nest was still visible at the far end of the alley, a distant promise of earth and law and paperwork and backup that would take twenty minutes and ask fifty questions. The files on her desk contained names she could not connect. The clique she had tracked for eighteen months, the off-the-books treatments, the kids who vanished from A&E with wounds no human made. This was the door. She looked down again at the Market lights, at Tomás and the scar and the medallion and the bone token now lying on the tile beside his boot. "Then you better make them listen!"
