You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The standing stones breathed. Aurora pressed her palm to the bark of the oldest oak and felt the tremor run up through her wrist, right to the place where the crescent scar pulled white against her skin. The air between the stones rippled. Not wind. A heat-haze that was not heat at all, a shiver in the world that caught the light and bent it wrong. The Heartstone Pendant woke against her sternum. A throb. Then another. Deep crimson light bled through her shirt and Aurora sucked in a breath as warmth spread through her collarbone, through her throat. "Rory." Nyx stood behind her. In solid form they topped her by half a head, their edges never quite still. Violet pits where eyes should have been caught the amber distortion and flared. "You feel it. The door remembers you." Aurora's fingers closed around the pendant. The silver chain bit cold into the back of her neck. "It burns." Isolde moved past them both. Silver hair dragged through bracken and did not disturb a single frond. Her feet left the wet leaf-mould untouched. No print. No crush. Pale lavender eyes fixed on the shimmer. "To enter the hungry garden, the worm must first admit hunger." Aurora shot her a look. "Isolde. Plain words." Isolde smiled. The expression never reached the rest of her face. "The Veil wears thin where roots run deep. Step through, little Carter. Or turn back and remain unfed." Nyx extended a hand. Darkness pooled in their palm, then thinned, then became almost flesh. Almost. "Together." Aurora took it. Nyx's skin felt like night air held together by will. She stepped through the shimmer. The world inverted. Sound cut out. Light cut out. Her boots found no ground and her stomach lurched because the fall never came. Then sound rushed back in a roar of colour and scent and heat. She gasped. Amber. The sky was amber, not blue. A low, endless amber that stretched without cloud or sun, warm as the inside of a kiln and lit from everywhere and nowhere. Light fell thick as honey over everything. They stood on black soil. It steamed. Around them, vines as thick as Aurora's torso coiled up trellises made from bone-white wood that spiraled twenty feet into the air. The trellises groaned under the weight of fruit. Fruit she had no name for. Some split open as she watched, spilling juice that hissed where it hit the earth. Clusters of glass grapes pulsed. Orbs of pale flesh hung low and shivered. An orchard. No. A vineyard. No. Both and neither. Rows upon rows of cultivated excess bled into a horizon that curved wrong. Dymas. The air smelled of sugar and blood and turned earth. It coated her tongue. Aurora swallowed and tasted mango and copper. "Christ." Her voice came out small. Nyx stood beside her, solid again, but their silhouette drank the amber light. Where the light touched them it vanished. Their violet eyes widened, a slow bloom of light in the shadow. "This place... it pulls." They pressed a hand to their chest, where a human heart would have been. Shadow bled from their fingertips and the ground drank it. Isolde already walked ahead. Wildflowers pushed up through black soil wherever her feet almost touched, bloomed, and died in the space of a second, petals blackening. "Exile knows exile," she said to the vines. "The prince who never fasts keeps a table for ghosts." "Isolde, wait." Aurora stumbled after her. The soil clung. Each step released a puff of warm, spiced steam that curled around her ankles. Her delivery shoes sank and stuck. The Heartstone throbbed faster now, a frantic drum against her ribs. She pulled the moonsilver dagger from her belt. The Fae-forged blade woke, cold enough to burn her palm through the wrap, leaf-shaped edge throwing back the amber sky in a clean, white line. The vineyard opened into a garden that should not have existed. Trees with trunks of braided bread. Aurora stared. No. Not bread. Bark that looked like crust, split to show soft white pith that steamed. Herbs the size of men, dill and fennel fronds brushing her shoulders, releasing clouds of anise and brine. A river of wine cut through the middle, slow and viscous, red as a wound. No water. Wine. On the far bank, figures moved. Tall, thin, translucent in the amber. Souls. Helbound. One knelt and tore leaves with hands that shook. Another stirred the wine river with a paddle larger than his body. The smell of roasting meat rolled over then, impossible, from no visible fire. Nyx's form flickered. For a heartbeat they went incorporeal, a smear of violet and night. Then snapped back with a gasp that sounded like wind through a keyhole. "It wants. It always wants." Aurora grabbed their arm. Shadow went solid under her grip. "I know. Stay here. Stay with me." Nyx looked down at her hand on them. The contact left frost on their dusk skin. "The sorcerer who reached too far," Isolde whispered, and now she stood knee-deep in the wine river though the bank was ten feet away. Time skipped around her. "He found a kitchen with no door out." Aurora turned. The path behind them had changed. The oak stones were gone. In their place rose a hedge of thorned canes heavy with those glass grapes. Each grape held a reflection not of Dymas but of Richmond Park at dusk, winter dim. Unease hooked cold under her ribs, deeper than the blade's chill. "We came through there." Isolde tilted her head. Her silver hair floated though no wind touched the garden. "Paths remember feet, but this place remembers mouths. One entry. Many hungers. Which hunger brought you?" The wine river lapped louder. Something moved beneath the surface, a slick coil, a back. Nyx stepped between Aurora and the river. Their height stretched. Six-two became seven as shadow pulled up from the black soil into their shoulders. "Something comes. It smells the Heartstone." Aurora's pendant flared. Crimson light threw hard shadows. The Fae blade in her hand brightened in answer, moonsilver edging to frost. The cold shot up her forearm and her fingers went numb around it. From between the bread trees emerged a shape. Not a soul. A chef. He must have been a man once. Now he was all belly and height, skin stained with juices, apron stitched from what looked like ledger pages. His mouth opened too wide when he saw them and showed rows of flat teeth made for grinding. He spoke, but no words left him, only the clatter of plates and the slosh of broth. Isolde did not move. Her lavender eyes caught the amber and threw it back. "The keepers of the feast. They do not welcome those who refuse the table." The chef raised a cleaver. The blade was bone. The edge wept grease. Aurora lowered her stance. Cardiff flat and Silas' bar felt a universe away. Her delivery job. Yu-Fei's kitchen. All that grease was familiar, but this grease hung in the air and made her want to retch and eat at the same time. "Rory." Nyx's whisper came from everywhere now, from the shade under the vines, from the shadow of the chef himself. "The wound between worlds here is still open. Behind the ferment. I feel it." Aurora saw it then, beyond the chef, beyond the river, past the orchard where light folded wrong. A lattice of shimmer, taller than the oak stones, wider. A tear. The Veil torn and held open by vines that grew through the tear itself, roots in Earth air, fruit in Hel amber. The chef lunged. Aurora swung. The moonsilver cut air first. Cold bit.
