You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The standing stones weren't supposed to be there. Rory had run through Richmond Park enough times delivering for Golden Empress — cutting across on her bike when the North Circular jammed up — to know the map by muscle memory. Oak and bracken, deer paths, the road. Not a circle of ancient oaks grown together in an arch, their bark fused into something that looked deliberately woven. "This way," Isolde said, and Rory almost didn't hear her because she was too busy staring. Isolde Varga left no footprints in the damp leaf litter, and Rory had stopped trying to pretend that wasn't unnerving. The half-Fae woman's silver hair caught what little afternoon light made it through the canopy, waist-long and moving wrong, like it was underwater. Beside Rory, Nyx flickered. They weren't solid today. They rarely bothered to be when it was just them. In the low light under the trees they were a silhouette of wrongness — six-two and roughly human-shaped, but the edges smoked. When they spoke it was wind through dead leaves. "The Veil is thin here," they whispered. "It shivers." Rory's hand went automatically to the pendant at her throat. It had been there since Eva's flat, since the package with no return address. The Heartstone was the size of her thumbnail on its silver chain, deep crimson, and until ten minutes ago it had been inert as a pretty rock. Now it pulsed faintly against her skin, warm. Warmer every step they took toward the stones. "Hel portal?" she asked, keeping her voice low. Isolde tilted her head. Her eyes were pale lavender, disconcerting and ethereal. "Not Hel," she said. "But close enough to sing to it. A door remembers every hand that has knocked." Which meant nothing and everything, which was exactly how Isolde spoke. Rory was learning to translate. "You said you live here," Rory said, straight to Isolde. She was five-six in her beaten trainers and delivery jacket, shoulder-length black hair tucked behind her ears, bright blue eyes narrowed against the cold. Cool-headed was the story her friends told. Right now her heart was hammering hard enough she could feel it in the crescent-shaped scar on her left wrist, that little white hook from when she was nine and thought she could catch a kitchen knife. "I do, and do not," Isolde said. "My grove is not on your maps. You enter it for the first time only once. Try to remember it correctly." Nyx brushed past her — or through her; Rory felt the temperature drop five degrees as they passed. "She means step inside before solstice shifts it closed," they said, almost kindly. The air between the oak stones shimmered. Rory had seen the Veil only twice before — both times with Nyx pulling her sideways out of trouble, a faint distortion like heat haze over pavement, visible only because Nyx had pressed their shadow over her eyes and let her see. This was thicker. It hung in the arch of living wood like a soap film stretched with amber light, trembling. Isolde stepped through and did not disappear. She was simply suddenly on the other side, standing in light that was too golden for late November in London. Beyond her, wildflowers. The Heartstone pulsed hotter. "Rory Carter," Isolde called, from ten feet away and somewhere else entirely. "You have a choice." Rory looked back once. Ordinary park. A dog barked far off. Then she took Nyx's offered hand — solid enough now, cool as stone and faintly vibrating — and stepped through. Sound changed first. The park sounds cut out as if someone had shut a door. No traffic, no planes, no dogs. The air inside was warm and smelled of honey and turned earth and something she couldn't name, sweet and slightly fermented. The light came from everywhere and nowhere. The sky visible through the canopy wasn't London grey. It was warm amber, like the codex descriptions she'd memorized in Silas's bar said the sky over Dymas looked — endless late afternoon, the color of mead held up to sun. "Oh," she breathed. The grove was a perfect circle maybe forty feet across, bounded by the same standing oaks, but inside the trees were impossibly tall, their bark silvered. Wildflowers bloomed year-round, the lore had said. It was an understatement. They didn't just bloom; they crowded, knees-high in impossible color — moon-blue bells that rang faintly when brushed, white stars that opened and closed as she watched, heather that glowed at the tips. There were no footprints but Isolde's absence of them. When Rory stepped, the flowers sprang back. "It's bigger on the inside," she said, and instantly felt stupid. Isolde smiled, small and sad. "It is exactly as big as it is allowed to be." Rory's trainers sank a little into moss that felt like carpet. The Heartstone against her sternum was now actively warm, thudding in a slow pulse that was not her heartbeat. Near a Hel portal, it pulsed. And Isolde had said a door remembers every hand. "There was a portal here," Rory said, realization clicking. Her law brain, the part that her father Brendan had tried to train out of wanting justice instead of argument, lined it up. "Not now, but — someone used this place as a crossing. Between Earth and Hel." Nyx drifted away from her, going incorporeal, their form spilling like ink across the flowers without crushing them. Their violet eyes were two faint coals in the smoke. "The Wardens would have watched it," they whispered, meaning the rift points. "Before. Long before. This place is older than Wardens." "Three hundred years I have kept it," Isolde said. She knelt — or seemed to; her pale dress never quite touched the ground — and touched a stone half-buried in moss. It wasn't a stone. It was a blade's pommel, overgrown. Rory's own blade hung at her hip, unfamiliar weight. Isolde's gift, moonsilver, leaf-shaped, always cold to the touch even through denim. Fae-forged, effective against demons. Rory had never drawn it outside the flat. She drew it now, because Isolde's tone had gone strange. The dagger was bitter cold in her hand. It luminesced faintly, even here, in the false daylight. Isolde's stone was another one. Same material, same chill. "A sister?" Rory asked. "A warning," Isolde said. "A Warden left it. He thought to cut the Veil and make it stay open, for glory. The Grove does not like to be cut." That was the unease then, sliding in under the wonder. For all its beauty, the place was watching them. Time moved differently here, Isolde had told her once. An hour inside could be minutes outside, or days. Rory felt it now as a pressure behind her ears, like being deep underwater. Her breath came a little too fast. The amber sky wasn't sky at all, but a membrane, and beyond it something vast shifted. "We shouldn't be here long," Nyx said, reforming beside her, voice tight as wind through a keyhole. "The Shade in me remembers this between-place. It wants to keep." Rory nodded. Her hand closed around the Heartstone without thinking. The crimson gem flared, inner glow brightening, and for half a second the air tore. It wasn't large. A pinhole, barely visible, at the center of the grove. But through it Rory saw— Vineyards that stretched to a horizon that curved wrong. Heat. The smell of roasting meat and sugar and sweat. Distant music, a feast in progress, laughter too loud. Figures moving, some too tall. Dymas. Gluttony. The realm of Belphegor, where souls cooked for eternities for patrons who never got full. The pendant seared her palm. She gasped and let go. The pinhole snapped shut with a soft pop that left her ears ringing. "Rory!" Nyx's hands — both solid now, shadow hardening to something like flesh — grabbed her shoulders. Isolde was standing again, lavender eyes wide for the first time since Rory had met her. "You brought a key," she said, not a question. "I didn't—" Rory's voice shook. She looked down at the Heartstone. It was pulsing faster now, then slowing, cooling. "Someone gave it to me. I thought — I don't know what I thought." "No lies in the Grove," Isolde whispered. "Only truth, for a moment. You are bound for Hel, Aurora Carter. Not today. But the door knows you." Rory's mouth was dry. Born in Cardiff to a barrister and a teacher, Pre-Law drop out, delivery girl who lived above a bar — that was supposed to be the whole story. Not this. Nyx stepped between her and Isolde, six-two of living night, protective. Their shadow fell over Rory and it felt safe. "We came to see," Nyx said, their whisper carrying an edge. "Not to be read." Isolde bowed her head. "Forgive me. I speak in riddles because the straight road is forbidden to me. What I meant to show you—" She gestured, past the buried pommel, to the center where the pinhole had been. "Look down. Truly." Rory forced herself to kneel. The moss was springy, damp. Under it, the earth was not earth. It was root, woven dense, and caught in the root was a skeleton, small, hands clasped around something that had long since rotted away. A child's skeleton. And around its neck, a twin to her Heartstone, dark and cold. Wonder and nausea hit her at once. The flowers rang as the breeze moved them, a soft, terrible chime. "It's a grave," she said. "It is a garden," Isolde said gently. "Everything that is planted here grows, even sorrow. Wildflowers bloom year-round because they are fed well." Rory understood. Some lost soul, hellbound, contracted, trying to get to Dymas through a Fae backdoor and failing. Or succeeding too well. She reached out with the moonsilver dagger — the Fae blade could cut through wards — and carefully, reverently, scraped moss from the small sternum. The cold bit her fingers even through the hilt. The blade sang faintly. Nyx knelt beside her, no longer bothering with solidity, their shadow pooling over the tiny bones like a blanket. "We should cover it," Rory said quietly. Her cool-headed, quick-thinking reputation was intact because no one saw moments like this, where her hands shook. "We should remember it," Isolde corrected. "That is what the Grove does." Rory took her pendant off, silver chain catching light. Her thumb brushed that little crescent scar on her wrist. Then she looped the chain over the child's skull and laid the warm, pulsing Heartstone gently on the moss. It dimmed immediately, as if acknowledging kin. It was not an ending. It was a marker. Proof that she'd been here, and that someone else had been here before. The amber light was dimming at the edges now, the grove exhaling. Time tugging. "We need to go," Nyx whispered. Rory stood, legs prickling. Isolde was already at the arch, her back to them, leaving no footprints. The Veil shimmered again, showing the grey ordinary London park beyond, a jogger passing in oblivious streak of neon. Rory took one last look at the flowers blooming riotous over sorrow, at the twin pendants — one warm, one cold — and slid her Fae-forged blade back into its sheath. Its cold lingered on her thigh. She stepped through, Nyx's shadow wrapped around hers, and the grove let them go.
