You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The oaks leaned in. Richmond Park held its breath after sunset, the last joggers gone, the deer bedded down in bracken that rustled with nothing. Aurora stopped two paces short of the standing stones. The air between them rippled. Isolde waited on the other side of that ripple. Silver hair to her waist, skin like river glass, lavender eyes that caught no light and reflected none. No prints marked the frost where she stood. "You came with a shadow stitched to your hem." Aurora tugged the zip of her delivery jacket higher. Her black hair brushed her shoulders, damp with cold. The wind cut through. "Yeah, well. He sticks." Beside her, Nyx folded and unfolded. In solid form they reached a head taller than her, a human outline poured full of night, edges smudged. When they moved, the dark moved after. Their eyes held a bruised violet glow. "Little seer. You call and we come." Isolde tilted her head. The smile never reached her teeth. "Two thresholds, one coin. What is owed circles back. Step, or stand." The Heartstone under Aurora's shirt knocked against her breastbone. It woke when she got close to the stones. Warmth bled slow through the silver chain, then a pulse, then another, in time with her own heart but off-beat enough to feel wrong. She curled her left hand. The crescent scar showed white. "Does it hurt?" Isolde's gaze dropped to the pendant, to the scar, to the blade at Aurora's hip. "What crosses does not break. What breaks was never whole." Nyx extended a hand. Not flesh. Not smoke. Something in between that drank the little light left. Cold rolled off it. "If this is a mouth, I would know its teeth." Aurora looked at that offered dark, at Isolde beyond the shimmer where wildflowers pushed through frost though no flower should live in December. She grabbed hold. The world tugged. The standing stones were not a gate. They were a suggestion the world obeyed. One step and the sound fell out. No traffic. No plane. No distant dog. The hush had weight. Aurora's ears popped. On the other side the grove opened. The trees were too tall and their bark ran with faint veins of light, slow as sap. Their canopy tangled into a roof that never closed. Patches of sky showed through - not sky, not night, but a deep indigo that swirled with motes like plankton in sea water. No stars. No moon. Only that slow churn. The ground sloped down into a bowl. Wildflowers bloomed in a brawl of colour that had no season. Bluebells pressed against snowdrops pressed against foxglove and poppies, all of them open, all faced inward. Their petals gave off a low hum, a choir too low for hearing, felt in the molars. Aurora let go of Nyx. Her boots sank into moss that sprang back instant. "Christ." Isolde drifted ahead. Where her bare feet touched, the moss did not compress. "You hear the grove trying your name." "I don't -" Aurora swallowed. The air tasted of honey and iron. "I hear - is that water?" "All groves keep a mirror." Nyx had gone thin. Their form stretched when they passed between two light-veined trunks, then snapped back, taller, denser. Their whisper scraped. "The Veil here - it shows its seam." Aurora followed their stare. Between two roots, the air folded wrong. A faint shimmer, like heat over tarmac, hung vertical, waist-high, narrow as a cut. Within it, amber light bled - warm, close, thick with smell of roasted flesh and sugar and sweat. Her pendant flared hot against her skin. She stumbled back. Her hand flew to it. "Fuck. That's -" "Another table. Another hunger." Dymas breathed on the other side. For a heartbeat Aurora saw beyond the shimmer - impossible distance - a banquet hall under a sky the colour of burnt honey, tables that stretched, vines heavy with fruit that glistened like organs. Then the fold sealed. Isolde did not stop. "Not your chair. Not yet." The path - not a path, but a choosing of less dense flowers - led deeper. The temperature dropped a degree with each step, then rose, then dropped again. The Fae-Forged blade on Aurora's belt turned cold enough to sting through denim. Moonsilver, leaf-shaped, bright even without moon. The glow strengthened. It picked out the motes in the air. Dust? Pollen? Something smaller that moved with purpose. Nyx crouched. Their hand hovered above the flowers without touching. "They watch." The bluebells inclined. Aurora swore they tracked Nyx, then her, then Isolde. "Are they alive? Like, actually alive?" Isolde brushed a poppy. It shivered. "What lives remembers being touched." Deeper in, time slipped. Aurora checked her phone. Dead screen. The numbers stuttered when she thumbed power - 19:42, then 19:16, then nothing. Her breath came short. The trees leaned closer. Light ran faster in their bark now, quicksilver, restless. She reached for Nyx without thinking. Her fingers passed through shadow then caught, solid, cold as river stone. "You feel it too?" "I feel too much. This grove was not made. It grew around a wound." A clearing broke open. In its centre a pool held still water that reflected no canopy. Instead it showed London, flipped. Tiny lights moved. Buses. Her flat above Silas' bar, dark. Richmond Park from above, a black lung in city glare. And two small figures at its centre - her and Nyx - looking down into it. Vertigo spun her gut. Aurora knelt. Her reflection did not kneel. It kept staring up. Bright blue eyes, unblinking. "Isolde, what the hell is that?" "The place between shows what stands on either side. You look through. It looks through you." Nyx knelt beside her. Their violet eyes lit the water, and for a second the reflection showed not London but another shade, vast, with wings made of stitched darkness, and Aldric's face, human and young and terrified, caught inside it like a fly in amber. Nyx recoiled. Water lapped without wind. "Do not drink." Isolde laughed. Short. Not cruel. "The clever ones never do." Beyond the pool, the grove changed pitch. Flowers gave way to white mushrooms the height of Aurora's knees, caps translucent, pulsing with slow light. Each throb pushed a puff of spores that hung gold in the air and did not fall. The air grew sweet, cloying. Aurora's nose ran. She wiped it. Her fingers came away clean but smelled of cut grass and cheap vanilla perfume she wore at sixteen. "Memory rot." Nyx stood and pulled her up with them. Their hand lingered. Solid now. Warm almost, from effort. "We go farther? The heart beats louder." At the far edge of the clearing, roots braided themselves into an arch. Not built. Grown. Beneath it, darkness that was not absence of light but a texture, a curtain. Isolde stopped before it. For first time her feet left a mark - not in moss, but in time. A delay. Her shadow arrived a second after she did. "One step for debt. One step for theft. One step for -" "Stop that." Aurora's voice cracked. The blade at her hip rang faint against its sheath, eager. The pendant now beat like a small frantic animal. "Just tell me straight. What's through there?" Isolde's lavender eyes found hers. In them, Aurora caught a flicker of something human, or something pretending, or something tired of pretending. "What you asked when you thought no one listened." The arch breathed. The sweet rot grew stronger. Nyx stepped forward first and the dark under the arch rippled around them, clung, then parted.
