<nc-section data-title="Version 1: A Stern Welcome" data-color="red"> The stables smelled of hay, leather, and horse sweat. Frederick had barely swung down from Thunder, his legs stiff from the ride, when a shadow fell across him. "You must be the new squire," a gruff voice said. Frederick turned. A broad-shouldered man in a dented breastplate stood with arms crossed, his grey beard trimmed short, his eyes the color of cold steel. A faded blue surcoat bearing a white hawk hung over his armor. "Sir Roland, I presume?" Frederick stammered, bowing too quickly. "I am Sir Roland, master of this yard and keeper of every fool boy they send me," the knight said, looking Thunder up and down. "You watered him before you left him standing? No? As I thought. Lesson one, Squire Frederick - a knight cares for his mount before himself. If you want to last a week here, you'll learn it." He tossed Frederick a wooden bucket, empty and heavy. "Well full won't move itself. Get on with it." </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 2: A Warm Welcome" data-color="green"> Frederick led Thunder toward the stables, marveling at the long row of stalls and the grooms rushing about in the evening light. As he was struggling to unbuckle his saddlebags with numb fingers, a laugh rang out behind him. "You're going to wrestle that bag all night if you keep at it that way, lad." Frederick spun around to see a tall knight leaning against a post, helmet tucked under his arm. His hair was silvering at the temples but his face was kind, lined from smiling. His armor was polished but practical, scratched from real use. "Sir Roland?" Frederick asked. "The same," the knight said warmly, stepping forward to take Thunder's reins. "I've been Sir Roland to three generations of squires now, so you may as well make it four. Welcome to Castle Aethelgard, Frederick." He expertly loosened the girth and gave Thunder an approving pat on the neck. "Fine horse. Strong heart. You must be tired, both of you. Come, we'll stable him together, and then I'll show you where they keep the stew that isn't entirely turnips. You've had a long ride." </nc-section> <nc-section data-title="Version 3: An Ominous Welcome" data-color="blue"> The stables were strangely quiet. The other horses had gone still as Frederick approached, and the lanterns swaying overhead cast long, restless shadows. A man was waiting in the gloom at the end of the row, utterly motionless. He wore dark plate without ornament, and his face was gaunt and pale in the half-light. "Frederick of Lowfield," he said. It was not a question. Frederick's hand tightened on Thunder's reins. "Yes, my lord. Are you... Sir Roland?" The knight stepped into the light. His eyes were a piercing, icy blue. "I am. I was told to watch for you." Sir Roland circled Thunder slowly, but his gaze never left Frederick. "Do you know why the castle requested you, squire? No ordinary farm boy is sent for the week the Dragon's star rises." He stopped before Frederick and lowered his voice. "There are no other squires this season. Only you. The others... left. Keep your horse close, and your door barred tonight. Training begins at first light. If you are still here." Without another word, he turned and vanished deeper into the stables, leaving Frederick alone with the uneasy silence. </nc-section>
