**VOICE SHEET — "The Fog Rolls Back"** *Setting: The Orchard Cup Café, Alborn, MN. Mid-morning. Golden leaves plastered against the window. SELVI sits alone with a cooling cider, hunched over her camera. HUNTER enters, scans the room, approaches. (Selvi's lines are in Hindi; translations in italics.)* --- Hunter: "Ma'am. Selvi, right? The photography student staying with the Lindgrens? Detective Hunter, county sheriff's department. Mind if I sit? I'm canvassing everybody who was out near Miller's Orchard yesterday morning. It ties into a case I'm working." Selvi: [clutching camera to her chest, looking up] "आप... आप पुलिस हैं ना? बैठिए ना। मैं... मैं अभी भी उसी बारे में सोच रही हूँ।" ("You... you're the police, aren't you? Please, sit. I... I'm still thinking about it.") Hunter: [pulling out a chair, then pausing] "Come again? ...Ma'am, do you speak English? Any English at all?" Selvi: [shaking her head slowly, voice trembling] "माफ़ कीजिए... मुझे अंग्रेज़ी नहीं आती। आप... आप हिंदी जानते हैं?" ("I'm sorry... I don't know English. Do you... do you know Hindi?") Hunter: [exhales, sits down anyway] "No. First time for everything, I suppose. Alright, Hunter. Improvise. You're not in trouble, ma'am. Nobody's saying you did anything. Breathe." Selvi: [hands shaking around the camera] "सुनिए — मैं तो बस तस्वीरें लेने गई थी। भोर की धुंध बहुत सुंदर थी। मैं जान-बूझकर कुछ नहीं देखना चाहती थी, सच में।" ("Listen — I only went out to take photographs. The morning fog was beautiful. I didn't want to see anything, truly.") Hunter: [squinting, catching none of the words, all of the fear] "Slow down. I can't follow what you're saying, but I can follow you. You're scared. Okay." [nods at her hands] "Is that your camera? Show me. Pictures are a language too. Show me." Selvi: [turning the screen toward him, tapping a photo] "देखिए, यह वाली। जब मैं पहुँची, तब यह गाड़ी वहाँ नहीं थी। और यह आदमी — शुरू में मुझे लगा, सेब की टोकरियाँ लाद रहा है।" ("Look, this one. When I arrived, that vehicle wasn't there. And this man — at first I thought he was loading apple crates.") Hunter: [leaning in, voice dropping] "That's a van. Dark van, on the service road. Zoom in — can you zoom? ...That's a person at the tailgate. Isn't it." [holds up fingers, points at his watch] "When. What time?" Selvi: "कल सुबह। छह बजकर कुछ मिनट।" ("Yesterday morning. A few minutes past six.") [holds up six fingers, taps her bare wrist where a watch would be] Hunter: [scribbling in a notebook] "Six-ish. That's the window." [mimes slamming a car door] "Did you hear anything — doors, engine—" Selvi: [nodding hard] "दरवाज़े बंद हुए — दो बार। फिर गाड़ी बहुत तेज़ी से निकल गई। मैं झाड़ियों के पीछे छिप गई। नहीं जानती क्यों... पर मेरा दिल ज़ोर-ज़ोर से धड़क रहा था।" ("The doors shut — twice. Then the vehicle left very fast. I hid behind the bushes. I don't know why... but my heart was pounding.") Hunter: [watching her hands, not her face] "Two doors. Took off fast. She hid." [writes] "I'm reading you right, aren't I. Good Lord." [looks up] "The man by the tailgate. Was he alone? Was somebody—" Selvi: [very quietly, eyes on the screen] "टोकरियाँ... टोकरियाँ रोती नहीं होतीं।" ("Crates... crates don't cry.") [long pause] "उसके बाद सब ख़ामोश था। वह ख़ामोशी सबसे बुरी थी।" ("After that, everything was silent. That silence was the worst part.") Hunter: [goes completely still] "...I didn't understand a single word of that, and I felt it anyway." [sets his pen down] "Why didn't you come forward? We've had flyers up all over town since the festival." Selvi: [spreading her hands, flustered] "मैं किससे कहती? जिनके साथ मैं रहती हूँ, वे बहुत प्यारे हैं, पर वे मेरी बात नहीं समझ पाते। और मुझे डर लगा — कहीं वे मुझे भी न ले जाएँ। मैंने सोचा, शायद मैं ग़लत हूँ। फिर आप आ गए।" ("Whom would I tell? The people I stay with are very sweet, but they can't understand me. And I was afraid — that those men might take me away too. I thought, maybe I'm wrong. Then you came.") Hunter: [nods slowly] "Fair enough. Half this town's been talking at me all week and telling me nothing. One more thing — you got anything else on there? Faces. Plates. Anything." Selvi: [swiping quickly, then stopping, hand over her mouth] "रुकिए। यह देखिए — नंबर प्लेट। मुझे समझ ही नहीं आ रहा था कि मैं उसकी तस्वीर क्यों ले रही हूँ। हाथ अपने-आप उठ गया।" ("Wait. Look at this — the license plate. I couldn't understand why I was photographing it. My hand just moved on its own.") Hunter: [staring at the screen] "That is a clean plate. Legible and everything." [phone buzzes; he silences it] "Hold that thought. [to her, pointing at her] What do we call it — what you speak?" Selvi: "हिंदी! मैं हिंदी बोलती हूँ।" ("Hindi! I speak Hindi.") Hunter: [phone to his ear] "Hunter. ...I know where the orchard is. ...No — she doesn't speak English, and I don't speak Hindi. ...You did? Where? ...Nobody touches anything. Ten minutes." [stands, pockets the phone] Selvi: [grabbing a napkin, writing quickly, pressing it into his hand] "प्लेट का नंबर लिख दिया है। और सुनिए — कैमरा मत छीनिएगा। तस्वीरें मेरी ज़ुबान हैं। उस आदमी को ढूँढ निकालिए।" ("I've written down the plate number. And listen — don't take the camera away. The photographs are my voice. Find that man.") Hunter: [folding the napkin into his breast pocket, dead serious] "Listen to me, even if the words don't land. Don't delete a single photo. Don't show these to anybody but me. Don't post anything online — not the festival group, not your folks back home, nobody. Keep that camera on you and your door locked. I'll be back within the hour with somebody who speaks Hindi. You have my word." Selvi: [drawing the camera against her chest, watching him head for the door] "ध्यान से जाइए, डिटेक्टिव। आज रात फिर धुंध उतरेगी... और धुंध में हमेशा वही गाड़ी लौटती है।" ("Go carefully, Detective. The fog will settle again tonight... and in the fog, it's always that same vehicle that comes back.") Hunter: [pausing at the door, half-turning] "Yeah. You too. ...I think." [the bell over the door chimes; he's gone into the bright cold] [Selvi sits alone a moment. Then she lifts her camera and photographs the empty chair, the fogged window, the town beyond. *Click.*]
