Hunter approaches, badge already out.* **Hunter:** "Ma'am. Melanie, right? The exchange student? Detective Hunter, Alborn PD." *(holds up the badge)* "I've got a few questions about last night. Ja — ich war dort. Aber ich habe nichts gesehen, ich schwöre. Ich fotografiere nur. Landschaften. Ich bin Studentin, Austauschprogramm, das ist alles." **Hunter:** "And now you're just doing sounds at me. Wonderful." *(taps the table)* "Listen. People have been disappearing in this town. Three this year. Last night it was a girl from the café — thirty yards from where you were standing with that thing." *(points at the camera)* "So. Camera. You. Last night. Click." **Melanie:** *(going pale)* "Die Vermissten... Sie fragen wegen der Vermissten. Die junge Frau aus dem Café — sie lebt noch, oder? Bitte. Bitte sagen Sie mir, dass sie lebt." **Hunter:** "There it is. That's not a 'nothing' face, that's an 'oh God' face. Out with it, kid." **Melanie:** *(hands trembling on the camera)* "Ich habe etwas auf der Speicherkarte. Gestern Abend. Ich dachte, es sei nur ein Schatten — ein Pfosten, ein Tier, irgendetwas anderes. Ich wollte es schon lange jemandem zeigen, aber niemand hier versteht ein Wort von dem, was ich sage." **Hunter:** "Kid, you're losing me. That's a man in a hood — standing forty feet from where Brandt's truck was found." *(mimes winding a watch, points at the screen)* "Time. When. When did you take this?" **Melanie:** "Uhrzeit? Ah — Moment, es steht am Rand vom Bild. Neunzehn Uhr zweiundvierzig. Sehen Sie? Neunzehn-vierzig-zwei." *(points at the timestamp, then at her own eyes, then at the photo)* "Ich habe es erst zu Hause auf dem großen Bildschirm gesehen. Da war mir sofort schlecht." **Hunter:** *(under his breath)* "Seven forty-two. She wasn't reported missing till eight-thirty." *(phone buzzes; he silences it without looking)* "Not now." *(to Melanie, slow and loud)* "You. Are the only. Witness. I have. And we can't exchange. One. Word." **Melanie:** "Ich weiß. Ich weiß, dass Sie mich nicht verstehen. Das ist das Schlimmste daran. With a translator. Don't delete that photo. Don't even look at it funny." *(mimes turning a key, points at her)* "Lock your doors. Doors. Everybody gets that one." **Melanie:** "Ja — ja, abschließen, ich habe verstanden! Aber — Herr Offizier! Gehen Sie nicht! Ich sage Ihnen doch noch, wie es war, ich—" **Hunter:** *(over his shoulder, halfway to his car)* "Stay where folks can see you, kid. This town's friendly small. Right now it ain't *safe* small." **Melanie:** *(glances down at the camera screen — freezes — calls after him, voice breaking)* "Herr Offizier! Warten Sie! Schauen Sie noch einmal auf das Foto — am Zaun, hinten, im Nebel! Da steht noch jemand! ES WAREN ZWEI!" *(But he is already gone. She sinks back into her chair, clutching the camera to her chest.)* "...Niemand versteht mich. Niemand."
