*Scene: The morning rush at the Sugarloaf Café has thinned. Paper apples still swing from strings along the window — leftovers from festival week. Isabella sits alone at a corner table, a mug of cider going cold, her camera cradled in both hands, thumb hovering over the review button as if she's afraid to press it. The bell over the door chimes. Hunter crosses the room, badge already in hand.* --- Hunter: *(flipping open his badge)* "Ma'am. Sorry to bother you. Detective Hunter, county sheriff's office. Of course." *(drags a hand down his jaw)* "Look, ma'am, I don't speak one word of Italian. Not one. So we do this the hard way." *(He lays a photograph on the table — a smiling woman in a bakery apron.)* "Amanda Kowalski. Didn't come home two nights ago. Third person this month." *(taps the photo, points at her, then at his own eyes)* "You. See. Her?" Isabella: *(the color drains from her face; her fingers tighten around the camera)* "Oddio... sì. Sì, l'ho vista. Ieri sera, era quasi buio... Ero al vecchio frutteto, vicino al lago, per fotografare la nebbia tra i meli. Lei è passata sul sentiero. Camminava in fretta. Hunter: *(watching her flinch, the raised hands like a camera, the pointed stare — not the words, but everything else)* "Slow down. I'm not getting the words, but that flinch told me plenty." *(points at the camera in her hands, then at the photo, then mimes pressing a shutter button)* "Camera. Yesterday. Picture? You take a picture?" Isabella: *(eyes widening; she spins the camera toward him, the screen glowing)* "Sì! La fotografia! È qui — guardi, guardi lo schermo! That's—" *(points at the figure, then at her, eyebrows raised)* "Him? You saw this man?" Isabella: *(shivering though the café is warm)* "L'ho visto con i miei occhi. There's gotta be somebody in this county who—" *(His phone buzzes in his hand. He glances at the screen, and everything about him changes — shoulders square, jaw set.)* Hunter: *(into the phone)* "Hunter. ... When? ... No — no, you keep everybody out of the orchard. Everybody. If the dogs are there, they stay on the trail. Nothing touches the water line until I arrive. I'm ten minutes out." *(hangs up)* Isabella: *(alarmed by his tone, gripping the camera)* "Che c'è? You see him—" *(points at the dark figure on the camera screen)* "—you see that man again, you call. Me." Isabella: *(taking the card with both hands, like something fragile)* "Non capisco... devo restare qui? È pericoloso? Quell'uomo sa che l'ho fotografato. Sa che esisto. E io sono sola in questo paese, non conosco nessuno, e domani c'è la festa delle mele e ci sarà tutta quella gente..." *(her voice drops to a whisper)* "Ho paura, detective." Hunter: *(looking at her for a long second; his voice comes out slower than usual — still flat, but not unkind)* "I know. I don't need words to see that." *(taps the card once)* "Card. Phone." *(holds up one finger, taps his watch, points at her)* "One hour. Me. Back. One." Isabella: *(she looks at his finger, then his watch, then holds up one finger of her own and touches her wrist)* "Un'ora. Ho capito. La aspetterò qui, seduta a questo tavolo. Non mi muoverò." *(manages something almost like a smile)* "Vada, detective. E stia attento in quel frutteto. C'è qualcosa che non va là fuori. Qualcosa che nessuno dovrebbe vedere." Hunter: *(a single nod — the first thing all morning they've both understood — then, at the door, glancing back at her camera, pointing and shaking his head firmly)* "Don't delete that photo. No delete." Isabella: *(clutching the camera to her chest, chin lifted a little)* "Non la cancello. Mai. È l'unica cosa che posso fare per quella povera donna... e la farò." *(quieter, mostly to herself, as the bell over the door chimes)* "Stia attento..." --- *The door swings shut behind him. Isabella sets his card beside the cold cider, presses the review button, and watches the fog between the apple trees one more time — keeping one eye on the window.*
