You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The green sign buzzed over the door on Berwick Street and threw colour on wet stone. Inside The Raven's Nest the air hung thick with hops and old wood. Old maps and black-and-white photographs crowded each wall from skirting to cornice. Rows of bottles caught low light behind the bar. Silas stood behind the pumps with a cloth in his hand. Grey streaked through his auburn hair and his close-cut beard. A silver signet ring flashed on his right hand when he reached for a glass. He favoured his left leg as he moved from till to tap. His hazel eyes missed nothing. Rory perched on a stool near the end of the bar. Straight black hair brushed her shoulders and stuck to her damp collar. Bright blue eyes tracked the door each time it swung. She turned a beer mat in circles with her left hand and her sleeve rode back from a small crescent scar on her wrist. She tugged the cuff down. Silas set a half in front of her. "On the house. You look soaked through." Rory curled her fingers round the glass. "Delivery run to Dean Street. Rain got in my hood." Silas wiped the bar round her elbow. "Yu-Fei works you too hard." The door swung and let in a gust of rain and cold air. A woman shook water from a tailored charcoal coat. She had cropped dark blonde hair swept back from her face. Diamond studs sat where hoops used to hang. Her boots had no scuffs. Her bag had a brass clasp and a City firm logo embossed on the strap. She scanned the room and stopped dead on Rory. "Rory Carter?" Rory froze with the mat between her fingers. "Eva?" Eva laughed and the sound cracked in the middle. "Bloody hell. It is you." Eva crossed the floor in quick strides and dropped her bag on the next stool. "You live in London and you never rang?" Rory slid off her stool and stood. They hugged and held on a beat too long. Eva smelled of rain and clean perfume and something sharp like new paper. Rory smelled of chips and wet denim. Eva pulled back and held Rory at arm's length. "Look at you. Same hair. Same face." Rory gestured at the cropped hair and the coat. "I could say the same." Eva shrugged out of the coat and draped it over the stool. "Work dress code. No mercy." Silas placed a fresh mat down. "What do you drink?" Eva glanced at the pumps and then at Rory's half. "Pint of bitter. Whatever is good." Silas drew the pint with a practised hand and his ring clicked on the tap. He set the glass down with a firm nod. Eva wrapped both hands round it. "So. You work here now?" Rory shook her head. "I run deliveries for Golden Empress down the road. Yu-Fei Cheung owns it. I help out here some nights. I rent the flat upstairs." Eva raised her brows. "Above a Soho bar. Your dad must love that." Rory took a pull from her glass. "Brendan Carter stopped giving opinions when I left Cardiff Uni." Eva drank and wiped foam with the back of her hand. "Pre-Law. You were top of the seminar. Dr Phillips bragged about you for a term." Rory spun the mat again and the crescent scar showed white against her skin. "I left before finals. No point finishing something I never wanted." Eva stared at the scar. "Fence behind the school. Year nine. You dared me to climb first." Rory met her eyes. "You went first. I followed and ripped my wrist open. Mum — Jennifer Ellis back then — drove us to A and E with your blood on my shirt." Eva smiled and the smile thinned at the edges. "Mrs Carter with the tea towel pressed to your arm. She told us off all the way down Cowbridge Road." A pause stretched between them. Silas moved down the bar to give them room and stacked clean glasses with care. Eva turned her pint in a slow circle. "You vanished, Rory. One row with Evan and then nothing. No answer. No post. I went round your place and your mum said you packed a bag." Rory stared at the maps on the far wall. "I had to get out. Evan checked my phone. He read my drafts. He put his hand through the kitchen door when I said I wanted to pause things." Eva gripped her glass harder. "You should have told me he hit you." Rory lifted her chin. "He never left a mark where people look. And you liked him. You all laughed when he carried me into the pub that night." Eva flushed to the roots of her hair. "I was nineteen and stupid. I thought it was romance. I thought you two would marry and I would be bridesmaid in pink." Rory gave a short laugh with no warmth in it. "You hated pink." Eva leaned forward. "I rang you for weeks. I left messages with your mum. I even asked your dad in the corridor at uni and he looked straight through me." Rory picked at the edge of the mat until it tore. "I binned my SIM at Paddington. New number. New everything. You told me to come here. Remember? You sent that postcard with the fox on it. Said London had room." Eva nodded. "I wrote that in first year. Before pupillage. Before rent tripled. Before Mum got ill." Rory looked up sharp. "Your mum? What happened?" Eva drank deep and set the glass down hard. "Stroke last spring. She lost speech for a month. I moved back to Grangetown for six months and slept on her sofa and billed hours from her kitchen table." Rory pressed her palm flat on the bar. "Why did no one tell me?" Eva held her gaze. "Who had your number, Rory? Who knew the name of the restaurant or the bar or the flat? I walked past this place by accident tonight. Green light in the rain. I needed a drink after a client dinner." Silas drifted back and refilled the nut bowl without a word. His limp showed in the drag of his left boot on the boards. Rory watched his hands and then looked back at Eva. "You finished, then. Solicitor and all. City bag and client dinners." Eva touched the logo on the strap as if she wanted to cover it. "Commercial property. Long hours. Good pay. I wear tights even in summer. Dad brags to the neighbours." Rory tilted her head. "Is that what you wanted back when you dyed your fringe purple and played drums in the garage?" Eva laughed again and rubbed her cropped hair. "The drums went to Cash Converters for exam fees. Purple washed out. Adult life edits you down." Rory finished her half and pushed the glass aside. "Cardiff edits you too. I could not breathe there. Dad with his wig and his lectures. Mum with her marking and her silence. Evan with his apologies and his fists." Eva reached across and touched the crescent scar with one fingertip. "I kept your seat in the library for a month. I told people you had flu. Then I told people you transferred. Then I stopped talking about you." Rory did not pull her hand away. "I thought about writing. A hundred times. Then shame sat on my chest and I went out on another delivery instead." Eva withdrew her hand and picked up her pint. "You look well, though. Thin, but your eyes are clear. No Evan shadow." Rory tucked her hair behind her ears. "I sleep with my door locked twice. I keep my tips in a tin. I know every shortcut from Soho to Brixton. It is a life." Eva looked round at the photographs and the maps and the low lamps. "It suits you. Dim room. Strangers. A landlord with secrets behind a bookshelf." Silas glanced over and his mouth twitched. Rory frowned. "What do you mean?" Eva nodded at the tall bookcase along the back wall. "Books in a bar that never get touched. Door seams. Come on. I draft leases for men with rooms like that." Silas polished a glass and slipped it on the shelf. "Every pub needs storage." Eva smiled without backing down. "Course it does." A new group pushed through the door with noise and shook umbrellas on the mat. The room filled with wet wool and loud talk. Eva checked her watch and then ignored it. Rory caught the gesture. "You need to go?" Eva shook her head and ordered two more with a lift of her glass toward Silas. "I have a train to catch in the morning. Early meeting. Mum needs her prescription collected. Same old list." Rory accepted the fresh pint and wrapped her left hand round it, scar hidden in her palm. "You still in Grangetown?" Eva nodded. "Same house. Same net curtains. Your old room across the street stands empty. Mrs Powell rents it to students now. They leave bins out." Rory stared into her glass. "I miss the sea. I miss your kitchen. I miss who we were before law and men and all that rubbish." Eva swallowed and her eyes shone in the bar light. "We were invincible with fake IDs and chips on the pier." Rory lifted her glass. "To purple fringe." Eva clinked her glass hard against Rory's. "To scars." They drank and the noise of the bar rose round them.
