You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

A detective is pursuing a suspect through rain-soaked city streets at night. The chase takes them from the street level down into an underground market. The rain came down in sheets over Soho, hammering the pavement and turning the gutters on Berwick Street into black rivers. Harlow Quinn stood in the doorway of a shuttered delicatessen with her shoulders squared and her hands buried in the pockets of her waterproof, watching the green neon sign across the street bleed down through the wet. The Raven's Nest. The sign buzzed and flickered against the dark, RAVEN'S in dripping green script, and below it the door opened and spilled a wedge of amber light onto the sidewalk. Quinn checked the worn leather watch on her left wrist. 23:41. She'd been on station for four hours, her socks soaked through, rain needling the back of her neck where her closely cropped salt-and-pepper hair left it exposed. Eighteen years in the Met had taught her patience the way the army taught recruits to strip a rifle. Stillness. Breath. Watch. The man who stepped out pulled his collar up fast and looked both ways. Even hunched against the weather she knew him. Five-ten, olive skin gone sallow under the streetlamp, short curly dark brown hair plastered to his forehead. Tomás Herrera. Ex-paramedic. Struck off after the business with the unlogged morphine and the patients who, according to the NHS tribunal, didn't officially exist. He had a duffel slung over his right shoulder and he favored his left arm, the one she knew carried a scar from wrist to elbow where a knife had opened him two winters back. He touched his chest as he turned, a quick involuntary tap where his shirt stuck to something small and round. Quinn had seen the custody photo from his arrest in '23. Saint Christopher medallion from Seville. He never took it off. He started walking north, fast but not running. Quinn gave him twenty yards and then moved. Her boots found no purchase on the slick flagstones. She lengthened her stride, keeping her weight forward, her breathing even. Rain rattled off awnings and drummed the tops of black bins. A taxi hissed past, throwing a fan of spray across her shins. The smell of wet concrete and fried oil and diesel hung low. Herrera glanced back at the corner of Wardour Street. Quinn turned her face into a shop window full of mannequins and kept walking. Her jaw tightened until it ached. Sharp lines, her mother had called them. Sharp enough to cut. He broke into a jog past the corner. "Shit," Quinn breathed, and ran. Her feet slapped water. The duffel bounced against Herrera's hip as he cut left into an alley choked with stacked crates and slicked-over refuse bags. The walls funneled the rain and the sound. Quinn's shoulder clipped brick. She pushed off it without breaking rhythm, her lungs burning clean. "Tomás Herrera! Metropolitan Police! Stop!" He didn't stop. He vaulted a low gate at the end of the alley with a paramedic's easy economy and landed running. Quinn took the gate with both hands, coat snagging, and dropped hard on the other side. Pain shot up her ankle and she swallowed it. They burst out onto Tottenham Court Road where the night buses sighed and the neon smeared across wet tarmac in long red and white streaks. Herrera dodged between a bus and a delivery van, horn blaring, and sprinted for the mouth of the Tube. Quinn ran into traffic after him, her warrant card already in her hand, flashing it at the furious driver who leaned on his horn. "Police! Move!" The stairwell down to Tottenham Court Road station stank of damp wool and hot brakes. Water streamed down the steps. Herrera took them three at a time, his trainers squeaking. Quinn followed, her hand skimming the rail, counting cameras as she went. She was off-book. No radio call, no backup. If she called it in now they'd want to know why she'd been sitting on Silas' bar without authorization for three weeks, why she was so certain the little clique who drank in the back room behind the bookshelf had something to do with the bodies that came out of Camden with no cause of death and frost in their lungs in August. Morris. The name rose in her like bile. Three years since they'd found DS Paul Morris in a service tunnel off Euston with his eyes wide open and his skin grey and no wound on him anyone could find. Unexplained, the coroner had said. Quinn had held his hand while the light went out of a man who wasn't injured. She didn't believe in unexplained anymore. She hit the ticket hall as Herrera slapped his Oyster and barged through the wide gate. Quinn flashed her warrant at the attendant and vaulted after him. "Hey! You can't —" "Police pursuit!" she snapped without stopping. The northbound Northern Line was pulling in, brakes screaming. Herrera threw himself through the closing doors sideways, duffel first. Quinn lunged. The rubber seals bit her shoulder and then gave. She stumbled into the carriage as the train lurched, grabbing a pole to stay upright, water pooling around her boots. Herrera was four bodies down, breathing hard, watching her in the smudged reflection of the window. Warm brown eyes, wide. Not criminal wide. Frightened wide. Rainwater dripped from his curls onto his shoulders. Quinn pushed forward through the swaying car. Commuters pressed themselves flat. "End of the line for you, Tommy," she said. "That bag contains what? Don't make me add resisting." He shook his head, just once. At Camden Town the doors sighed open and he was gone, out and up the escalators before she could close the distance. The street above was worse. Wind drove the rain horizontal across Camden High Street. The shuttered market stalls rattled. The smell of charred corn and patchouli and rain-soaked timber. Posters peeled from brick. Herrera ran north, past the shuttered High Street shops, past the lock bridge where the canal ran high and brown and fast. Quinn ran after him, her chest heaving now, forty-one years old and feeling every one of them. Her left wrist throbbed where the watch strap cut in. Military precision, Morris used to tease her. Lefty loosey, Quinn. Even your watch is regimented. She hadn't been able to throw the watch away. Herrera cut right down a side street that dead-ended at a construction hoarding plastered with rave flyers. For half a second Quinn thought she'd got him. Then she saw it. A gap in the hoarding, just wide enough for a man, and beyond it darkness and the skeletal mouth of a disused stairwell going down. He looked back at her. Rain streamed down his face. For a moment, under the sodium light, the Saint Christopher at his throat caught the glare as his shirt hung open. "Detective, please," he gasped. "You don't want to go down there. Not without — not tonight." "Then stop running and talk to me!" He shook his head again, desperate. "They'll kill you if you go in as a cop. They'll kill me if I don't go in." He ducked through the hoarding. Quinn reached it three seconds later and forced her way through, corrugated metal shrieking against her coat. The stairwell dropped into wet black. The air coming up was wrong. Cold, mineral, old stone, and underneath it something sweet and chemical, like burnt sugar and bleach. Ozone. Her torch beam shook as she drew it. Concrete steps, water sheeting down them, old London Transport tiling cracked and colonized by mold. At the bottom, a steel door stood ajar, leaking yellow light and noise. She descended with her back to the wall, warrant card in her left hand, torch in her right. Eighteen years told her to announce herself. Something older told her to keep her mouth shut. Beyond the door was a tunnel. Not a service tunnel. A platform that didn't exist on any map she knew. The abandoned Tube station beneath Camden. She'd read the closure reports. Sealed in '39. War damage. Except it wasn't sealed. Strings of caged bulbs burned along the vaulted ceiling. The air thrummed. Stalls crowded the old platform edge where tracks should have been, canopied in tarps, piled with things that made her eyes skip: jars of phosphorescent moths, knives that smoked, bundles of herbs that moved when no wind touched them, vials of liquid the color of bruises. Men and women in heavy coats moved between them, speaking low, trading folded paper and small bone discs. The Veil Market. The name surfaced from three weeks of whispered surveillance outside the Raven's Nest, from informants who laughed when she wrote it down. A hidden market for enchanted goods, banned alchemy, information. It moved every full moon, and the moon tonight hung fat and white above the rain. At the foot of the stairs a huge man in a donkey jacket held out a scarred palm. Herrera, breathing in ragged pulls, fished in his pocket and slapped something pale and carved into it. A bone token. The doorman nodded and jerked his chin toward the stalls. Herrera glanced back once more, saw Quinn in the stairwell shadow, and his face crumpled. He mouthed one word. Sorry. Then he melted into the crowd. Quinn pressed her spine to the cold tile and killed her torch. Her heart hammered against her ribs loud enough she was sure the doorman would hear it. The bone token. No token, no entry. No warrant, no jurisdiction, no backup who would believe this place was real. If she walked down those last six steps and showed her badge, she would be alone in a room full of people who traded in things the law didn't have names for. If Herrera disappeared in here, she lost the only thread she had to the clique, to the back room behind the bookshelf in Soho where maps of these tunnels were pinned to walls covered in black-and-white photographs, to whatever had taken Morris with no mark on him. Rainwater ran from her hair down her sharp jaw and dripped off her chin. She could feel the weight of the watch on her wrist, each second ticking. Procedure said call it in, seal the entrance, wait for daylight and a team and a legal entry. Instinct said by daylight this place would be an empty tomb again for another month, and Herrera with it. The doorman was looking down the platform, distracted by an argument at a stall where blue flame licked a copper bowl. Quinn slipped her warrant card back into her pocket, picked up a broken shard of tile from the step, and weighed it in her hand. She thought of Morris's grey face, of Herrera's frightened eyes, of the medallion from Seville glinting in the rain. She took the first step down.
