You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The wind cut through Richmond Park with teeth. Aurora pulled her collar up against it and shoved her hands deep in the pockets of her jacket. The path had ended ten minutes back. The trees ahead grew too close together, oak and hawthorn knotted at the root, their branches knit into a wall that had no business existing in the middle of a public park. No joggers. No dog bark. No traffic hum from the road she knew ran less than half a mile east. Isolde stood at the edge of the trees. Silver hair caught what little light bled through the cloud and threw it back. Pale lavender eyes fixed on Aurora. She left no mark in the frost where she stood. "You brought the shadow and the stone." Nyx unfolded from Aurora's right. One moment a stretch of shade beneath a bare oak, the next a tall silhouette with edges that never quite held still. Violet caught in the depth of their eyes and brightened. "We followed. You called." Isolde inclined her head. A smile touched her mouth and vanished. "Some doors open only when you bleed a little memory to find them. Step past the old teeth, little Carter. If the Grove wants you, it takes you." Aurora's left hand found the pendant beneath her jacket. The Heartstone lay thumbnail-small against her skin, deep crimson on its silver chain, and it held no heat. Not yet. Her right hand brushed the hilt at her hip. The Fae blade Isolde had pressed into her palm a week earlier bit back with its constant cold, even through the sheath, even through denim. Moonsilver leaf-shaped thing, too light for steel, too sharp for ornament. "You first." Isolde did not walk. She drifted. One smooth passage between two oak trunks that rose like standing stones, bark furrowed into deliberate whorls and old carvings worn to ghosts. Moss capped their roots. The air between them shivered. Aurora stared at that shimmer. It hung vertical in the cold, a faint distortion like heat off summer tarmac, but with colour caught in it, oil on water, amber and violet. She had seen nothing like it in London, nothing like it above Silas' bar or on her delivery runs for the Golden Empress. Her vision snagged on it and her stomach turned. "That's the Veil." Nyx's voice slipped over her ear, wind through dry leaves. "You see it now." Aurora nodded. Her bright blue eyes watered in the cold. She stepped forward and the shimmer pulled. The world tipped. Cold went. Sound went. The ground under her trainers gave a soft sigh and forgot winter. Aurora stumbled onto moss that had no right to be so thick, so green, so warm underfoot in December. The air on the other side smelled of crushed wildflowers and turned earth and something sweeter, sap and honey, and underneath that a metallic tang, old magic, old stone. Light came from everywhere and nowhere. No sun pierced the canopy, but the canopy glowed. Leaves the size of dinner plates hung overhead, amber at the edge, green at the vein, translucent when a breeze moved them. The breeze had no source. Behind her Nyx coalesced with a ripple. Their form solidified, tall and humanoid, shadow made flesh, and then thinned again as they tested the air. They lifted a hand and watched their own fingers smoke at the tip, then knit back together. "Thick here. Like wading." Isolde already stood ten feet ahead, though Aurora had not seen her move. Wildflowers broke around her bare feet and sprang back without a crease. Bluebells and foxgloves and flowers Aurora had no name for, white starbursts with throats of gold, all in bloom at once, all open to a light that was not sunlight. The clearing spread wider than Richmond Park allowed. The oak standing stones ringed it in a loose circle, each stone taller inside than it had appeared outside, each carved with spirals that caught the light and moved. "An hour inside—" Isolde's voice curled. "—is a blink beyond, or a week. The Grove keeps its own count." Aurora turned in a slow circle. Her shoulder-length black hair snagged on the damp air and clung to her neck. The scar on her left wrist, small crescent pale against skin, prickled. "This is impossible." Nyx tilted their head. Violet eyes narrowed. "Is it? You live above a bar that never closes and work for a woman who knows the name of every soul in Dymas. You carry a stone from Hel and a blade from Faerie. You pass through the Veil and call it impossible." Aurora shot them a look. A short laugh escaped her. "Fair." She stepped deeper. The moss gave under each footfall and hummed, a low note that travelled up through the soles of her trainers into her bones. Each step released scent, bruised thyme and mint. Insects drifted past, but wrong, too large, wings of glass etched with light, bodies striped amber and black, humming in a chord rather than a drone. One hovered before her face. Aurora held still and watched her own reflection warp in its compound eyes. Isolde laughed, soft. "They taste your wonder. They leave you alone if you let them." Aurora exhaled and the insect spun away, light fracturing off its wings. The Heartstone woke. Heat bloomed against her sternum through her shirt, a slow pulse, crimson light bleeding through fabric and skin, faint inner glow that beat with her heart and then out of rhythm with it. Aurora clutched at the chain and lifted the pendant free. The deep crimson stone throbbed, light catching the silver chain in hot flashes. Nyx drew back a step. Their shadow-form rippled hard, edges fraying. "Portal." Isolde's lavender eyes flicked to the stone and then past it, to the centre of the grove. "Not here. Near. The Grove remembers every tear in the Veil. The Wardens watch the rifts. This one sleeps." Aurora followed her gaze. At the heart of the clearing a pool lay, perfectly round, rimmed with flat white stones. The water held no reflection. It held sky. But not the amber sky of Dymas that Yu-Fei had described once, late at night over the restaurant's back steps, vineyards under warm amber, gluttony made beautiful. This sky swirled, slow, deep violet and amber mixed, and in its depth points of light turned like distant lanterns under water. The Fae blade at her hip flared in answer. Cold shot up her palm even without touching it, a line of frost up the side of her jeans where the sheath rested. In the strange light the moonsilver caught and threw back a clear, faint luminescence, moonlight on water. Aurora drew the blade an inch. Cold bit her fingers. The leaf-shaped edge sang without sound. "It hates that water." Isolde drifted to the pool's edge. Her feet made no print on the white stones. "It hates what waits beneath that water. A wound to Hel never heals clean. Belphegor's kitchens leak. Even here." Nyx crouched beside the pool. Their long shadow spilled over the white stones and stretched, thin and then thick again, as if the light could not decide what to do with them. They extended a hand over the surface without touching. The water rippled to meet the shadow and then recoiled. "The Veil thins on the solstice. Winter weakens it. Summer seals it." Isolde's smile sharpened. "You listened." Nyx's whisper curled, amusement in it. "I was Aldric when the year turned in 1643 and a circle failed. I remember thin nights." Aurora knelt opposite them. The moss kissed her knees through denim. The flowers pressed close, perfume thick enough to taste, sweet on the tongue. She leaned over the water and her breath fogged a surface that had no temperature. The sky inside the pool turned faster. The Heartstone pulsed harder against her chest, warm enough now to sting, crimson light painting her throat, her chin, the crescent scar on her wrist. She lifted the pendant over the water. The stone's pulse and the pool's slow turn fell into sync. Light burst between them, a thread thin as spider silk, crimson to violet, pendant to pool, and the air filled with a sound like distant bells, like a market street heard from underwater. The wildflowers shivered in unison and bowed. Nyx jerked their hand back. Shadow smoked off their fingertips. "Rory." Aurora did not pull away. She watched the thread hold, taut, bright, wonder and dread tangled tight in her chest. Her cool head counted possibilities, quick out-of-the-box leaps that had gotten her out of Cardiff, out of Evan's flat, into London, into this. The thread was not a bridge. Not yet. A question. Isolde knelt beside her. Silver hair spilled forward and brushed the white stones. Her lavender eyes met Aurora's bright blue and held. "You see the cost of crossing. The Grove asks, do you pay?" Aurora lowered the pendant a fraction. The thread thinned. The pool stilled a fraction. "The Veil holds." She touched the Fae blade's hilt. Cold steadied her hand. "What does it do if I cut it?" Isolde's laugh came again, riddles inside it. "A cut never mends the cloth, but it lets the wind through." The bell sound faded. The thread snapped with a soft pop. Heat ebbed from the Heartstone. The pool resumed its slow turn, violet and amber, indifferent. The flowers lifted their heads. Nyx's form settled, violet eyes dim and steady again. Aurora slipped the pendant back under her shirt. The crimson glow dulled. Cold from the blade bled into her hip and grounded her. She pressed her palm flat to the moss beside the white stones. The ground answered with warmth and that low hum.
