You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

Rain hammered the Soho pavement and bled green light from the sign above The Raven's Nest across the wet glass. Inside, the air hung thick with hops and lemon oil and old woodsmoke. Old maps and black-and-white photographs crowded the walls from skirting board to cornice. A bookshelf stood against the far wall and hid the back room. The crowd had thinned to three regulars and a bloke asleep over crisps. Rory perched on a stool at the end of the bar with her delivery bag from the Golden Empress slumped at her feet. Rainwater drew dark lines down the canvas. She tucked a strand of straight shoulder-length black hair behind her ear and kneaded the small crescent-shaped scar on her left wrist with her thumb. Silas Blackwood worked the pumps. He stood a head above the back bar, tall frame angled to favour his left leg. Grey streaked through his auburn hair and his short beard caught the low light. His hazel eyes tracked the door each time the wind shoved it. The silver signet ring on his right hand clicked against glass as he set a pint down. The door swung hard and let in a gust and a woman in a charcoal coat. Water beaded on tailored shoulders. Heels struck wood with a clean crack. The woman shook rain from a sharp bob and scanned the room with a practised sweep. Her gaze snagged on Rory and stopped. Rory froze with her thumb pressed into the scar. "Eva?" The woman laughed, one short burst, and crossed the floor in five strides. She dropped her clutch on the bar and gripped Rory by both elbows. "Christ. Look at you." Rory slid off the stool. Her trainers squeaked. She took in the pressed shirt cuffs, the gold watch, the pale line where a lip piercing had been. The last time she had seen that face it had been half-shaved, ink fresh on the jaw, shouting lyrics in a Cardiff kitchen with a cracked tile floor. "You cut it all off." Eva touched the ends of her hair. "Grew up. You look exactly the same." Silas set a clean glass down and wiped his hands on a towel. He nodded once at Rory, a question in the lift of his brow. Rory pulled a stool out with her foot. "Sit. You drink wine, right? Red? You used to nick your mum's Rioja." "Still do when I visit. Whisky now. Single malt if he has it." Silas reached for the high shelf without a word and poured two fingers. His limp showed as he shifted his weight to pass the glass across the bar. The ring flashed. Eva curled her fingers round the tumbler and looked round at the maps, the photographs of boxers and jazz men, the green wash from the window. "You work here?" "I live upstairs. I run deliveries for Yu-Fei down the road. I drink here most nights when Si lets me." "You left Cardiff Uni for this?" The words landed flat between them. Rory picked at a beer mat and tore the corner. Fibres balled under her nail. "I left Cardiff for a lot of reasons. Pre-Law was Brendan's dream, not mine. You know that. You were the one who told me to get on the train." Eva drank. Her throat moved. She set the glass down with care and lined it up with the edge of the bar mat. "I remember the phone call. You were in the bus station. You said Evan had—" "Don't." "Fine. I told you to come. I had the spare room in Peckham. I said I'd meet you at Paddington." Rory looked up. Bright blue eyes held on Eva's face. A bus rumbled past outside and shook the glass in the frames. "You never came to Paddington." Eva's mouth opened. She closed it and reached for the whisky again. Her watch face caught the bar light and threw a thin white line across her wrist. "Work went mad. Then the landlord sold the flat. I crashed with Dan for a bit. I texted." "You texted three weeks later. You said sorry, crazy times, let's get a pint. Then nothing for two years." "I know." "You were my best mate since primary. Mam rang you when I stopped answering. Jennifer Ellis, ringing round like I was fifteen and missed curfew. You told her I was fine. You hadn't even seen me." Eva turned the tumbler in slow circles. The ice knocked. "I told her what she needed to hear. She was crying down the phone. What did you want me to say? That you vanished into London with forty quid and a black eye and I lost you at the station?" Silas moved down the bar to serve the bloke with the crisps. He gave them room but kept his eyes on the mirror behind the optics. The reflection doubled the green from the sign and cut hard lines across both women's faces. Rory laughed and the sound scraped. "You always had an answer. Debating society. Cardiff comp. You talked that copper out of a caution when we were seventeen and pissed on St Mary Street." "Someone had to talk. You went mute whenever any man in uniform looked at you. Even then." Rory pushed her own pint away. Foam clung to the rim and slid. "Evan liked that about me. Liked that I shut up." Eva's hand stopped on the glass. Her knuckles whitened round the cut crystal. "I didn't know how bad it got. You never said." "I said enough on the phone that night. You heard him in the background. You said get out now." "I meant it." "Then where were you?" The regulars went quiet over their darts. Rain needled the window. A bus hissed to a stop and pulled away. Eva pulled her coat tighter round her shoulders though the bar held heat. "I got promoted. I bought the suit. I learned how to order wine for clients and how to smile when they talk over me. I told myself you were tough. Rory Carter, cool head, clever mouth. Pre-Law dropout with more brains than the whole seminar. I told myself London would suit you." Rory shook her head and the black hair swung forward to hide her cheek. "London spat me out the first month. I slept on night buses. I washed in the loos at Victoria. Yu-Fei gave me shifts out of pity. Si gave me the flat because he felt sorry for the Welsh girl crying on his steps with a dead phone." Eva stared at her. The polish cracked round her eyes. She looked older than twenty-five, or younger, hard to place under the bar light. "I wrote you letters. Never sent them. Pathetic, innit? Drafts on my phone. Long ones. About Dan leaving and Mum's chemo and hating my job. I deleted them." "Why?" "Because you needed more than my crap. Because I felt guilty every time I opened my mouth." Rory reached out before she thought and touched the pale dent above Eva's lip where the ring had been. The skin felt smooth and new. "You took it out." "Work said clients prefer a clean face. I said fine. I sold the bass. I sold everything from that kitchen, pretty much." "You loved that bass more than people." Eva smiled and the smile pulled crooked. "I love rent more now. Central London rent. Council tax. All that adult bollocks." Rory dropped her hand and wrapped both palms round her pint glass for warmth. Condensation bit into her palms. "Mam still asks about you. Every Sunday call. She asks if Eva still does law." "I do property now. Conveyancing. Riveting stuff about damp surveys." "You always said you'd do human rights. You marched. You dragged me to that protest outside the Senedd in the pissing rain." Eva finished the whisky and pushed the glass forward for another. Silas caught Rory's eye and gave a minute shake of his head. He poured anyway and slid it across with his right hand. The signet ring rang against wood. "I still march. In my head. On the Tube. Does that count?" Rory picked up the fresh glass and drank from it herself. The malt burned. "No." Eva watched her drink and let out a breath through her nose. She pulled her clutch into her lap and clicked the clasp open and shut, open and shut. "You look good, though. Thin, but good. Your eyes—" "Don't do that." "Do what?" "That voice. That teacher voice. Mam's voice. Jennifer Ellis checking if I've eaten." Eva snapped the clutch shut and held it with both hands. Her shoulders rose. "I missed you. Is that allowed? Am I allowed to say that after four years?" Rory stared at the maps on the wall. A red pin marked Prague. A crease ran through the Thames. The photographs showed men with bruised knuckles and women with bee-stung lips, all long dead. "You missed the idea of me." "That's unfair." "Is it? You walk in here after years. New hair. New job. New accent, half London. You order whisky like you own the place. You don't know what street I live on. You don't know I can't stand buses any more. You don't know I—" Rory broke off and pressed her thumb hard into the scar till the skin blanched. Eva leaned in. Her perfume cut through beer and smoke, something clean with vetiver. "Tell me, then. Tell me one thing. The buses—" "I hide upstairs when I hear them brake. Si hears me pacing. He leaves tea outside my door and pretends he didn't." Silence pooled round the words. Eva's face changed. Colour left her cheeks then rushed back. She put a hand out and stopped it mid-air above Rory's wrist. "God, Ror. I'm sorry." Rory looked at the hovering hand. Veins stood blue under pale skin. The gold watch ticked. "You sent one text." "I know." "You let me think I'd imagined the whole friendship." Eva withdrew her hand and folded it with the other round the clutch. Her knuckles shone white. "I thought about Paddington every day for a year. I stood on that platform in my head. I saw the board change and your train come in and me not there. I—" The door banged again and cold air swept in with two lads shouting about football. Silas straightened and favoured his good leg as he moved to head them off to the far table. The moment thinned. Rory drained the whisky and set the glass down hard enough to sting her palm. "Another?"
