You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

Rain lashed Soho and turned Brewer Street to a slick black mirror. The green neon above The Raven's Nest bled down the brick and smeared in the gutters. Quinn held the doorway opposite with her coat collar up and her shoulders square. Water ran off her salt-and-pepper crop and cut lines down a sharp jaw. She checked the worn leather on her left wrist and fixed her brown eyes back on the bar door. Old maps and framed photographs crowded the windows behind the glass. A bass line thumped through the wood. The door swung out and threw a wedge of amber light across the wet stone. Tomás Herrera stepped into the rain with a canvas medical bag strapped across his chest. His short curls clung to his forehead. Olive skin shone under the sign. A Saint Christopher medallion caught the neon at his throat as he turned his collar against the weather. A white scar split the skin of his left forearm where his sleeve rode up. Quinn pushed off the wall and crossed the street with her warrant card high. "Tomás Herrera! Police! Stand where you are!" He stared at her for half a breath. His warm brown eyes widened. He bolted. "Stop!" Quinn sprinted after him and her boots kicked up rooster tails of spray. Rain needled her face and soaked through her trousers at the knee. The medical bag bounced against his hip as he cut left into a narrow alley stacked with bins and black sacks. "Bloody hell, Herrera! Pack it in!" "You don't want this one, Detective!" His voice cracked off the walls. His trainers slapped the puddles. Quinn gained a stride and reached for his strap. Her fingers grazed canvas. He twisted free and shouldered through a fire exit door as it swung shut on a kitchen crowd. Steam and garlic and fryer smoke rolled out and swallowed him. Quinn rammed the door with her forearm and burst into heat and shouting cooks. She vaulted a crate of leeks and tore through the back passage. "Out of the way! Police!" She hit the rear yard in time to see his silhouette scale a brick wall topped with broken glass. He threw the bag over first and hauled himself after with raw strength in his arms. The scar on his left forearm stretched white under strain. Quinn jumped and caught the top course with both hands. Glass bit her palm. She swung a leg up and dropped hard on the far side into a service lane. Tomás sprinted for the main road with his breath ripping out in clouds. Buses hissed past and threw up curtains of road wash. He dodged between a black cab and a delivery van with inches to spare. Horns blared. " Herrera!" Quinn pounded across the lanes with her arms pumping and her jaw locked. A cyclist swerved and cursed her. She kept her eyes on the medallion flashing at his neck each time lightning split the cloud. He ran north with no pause for traffic lights or crossings. Oxford Street blurred in shop light and shuttered fronts. Tottenham Court Road opened in a river of headlights. Quinn spoke into her radio as she ran and got static and a fragment of a control room voice back. "No backup! Track my phone! Suspect on foot toward Euston!" "Go back, Quinn!" Tomás risked a glance over his shoulder and rain flew off his curls. His chest heaved. "You open that bar tab and you drown! Let it go!" "Three years I let things go! Not tonight!" Her voice tore raw from her throat. Her lungs burned. Her left shoe lost grip on a manhole cover and she windmilled once and caught her balance and drove on. Camden High Street rose in a tangle of shutters and market stalls battened for the storm. The full moon sat behind cloud and threw a dull glow over the rooftops. Tomás veered off the pavement toward a hoarding around a disused Underground works. A padlocked gate stood ajar with its chain cut. A hand-painted sign warned of live current and structural collapse. He slipped through the gap. "Stop right there!" Quinn closed the distance to ten metres, five. She saw rust and concrete steps fall away under the street into darkness. A throat of warm air breathed up from below with the stink of oil and incense and scorched sugar. Faint music pulsed from the deep, drums and a fiddle played too fast for human hands. Tomás took the steps three at a time without a torch. Quinn hit the top step and swung her Maglite up. The beam shook in her grip and cut through rain and dust. "Last warning! Come back up those stairs with your hands where I see them!" He halted on a landing where the tiled wall split open into an old ticket hall. Mould ate the roundel. Water dripped from cables. Beyond an iron grille, light flickered gold and green and blue. A crowd murmured. Spice and copper and rot drifted up in waves. A massive man with tattooed knuckles blocked the grille with his arms folded. Stalls stretched behind him in a vaulted cavern strung with lanterns and wire. Glass jars glowed on velvet cloth. Blades and bones and bottled smoke changed hands for coin and folded notes. A woman with antlers of bone haggled over a coil of red root. A boy with solid black eyes counted teeth at a scale. Tomás fished inside his jacket and held something up between two fingers. A small bone token, yellowed and carved with a key. The doorman nodded once and stood aside to let him pass. Tomás paused inside the light and looked back up at Quinn. Rain streamed off his face and his bag dripped on to the tile. His hand closed round the medallion at his neck. "You walk in here with that badge and that light and you break the peace! You understand me! They keep score down here!" Quinn swept the beam across the market mouth and then back to his face. Her palm left blood on the torch grip. Her watch ticked loud under her cuff with each pulse in her wrist. She thought of DS Morris and an empty car with the doors open on a night with rain much like this one and no report that made sense after. "That why you run, Tommy? You patch up things that leave marks like that and you say nothing?" "I keep people alive! You want an arrest, you arrest me up here in the rain!" He spread his arms wide and the crowd behind him stilled and turned their heads toward the stairs. Dozens of eyes caught the torchlight, some wrong in shape and shine. The music stopped mid-bar. The doorman shifted his weight and cracked his knuckles. "Come down and I cannot protect you! Stay, and you lose me!" Quinn planted her boots on the slick top step. Water hammered her shoulders and ran in rivers off her coat hem into the shaft. The radio at her shoulder spat static. No boots, no sirens, no backup in the storm above. Below lay heat and light and a hundred witnesses who did not exist on any system. She killed the Maglite for one second and let the dark take her outline. She drew a slow breath that rattled with rain and cold air. "Stay where I see you, Herrera!" She started down the steps after him.
