The oak did not look different from the others until Aurora brushed her palm against the bark. The grain shifted under her fingertips, and the moss at its base gave a soft sigh.

Isolde stood on the other side of the ring of stones with her hands empty at her sides. Silver hair caught the late afternoon light and threw it back. Her feet rested on the grass without leaving a mark.

"You are late," Isolde said.

Rory's coat snagged on a low branch. She freed it and stepped into the clearing. The air changed immediately. The cold of Richmond Park stayed at the edge of her skin, then dropped away. The grass under her boots felt spongy and warm. Wildflowers pressed up through it in every color she had a name for and a few she did not. Some of them opened as she watched.

Nyx did not step so much as unspool from the shadow of a fallen log. The silhouette rose to just over six feet, edges softening and hardening as if the light could not decide what to do with them. Violet eyes caught the dappled sun.

"Smells like a kitchen," Nyx said. The voice came from everywhere and nowhere, a whisper carried on wind.

Aurora pulled the collar of her jacket up. The pendant at her throat warmed against her skin. Deep crimson caught in the silver chain. A faint inner glow pulsed once, slow.

"You brought it," Isolde said. She did not look at the pendant.

"Found it in my flat," Aurora said. "It was in the pocket of a delivery bag. No note."

Isolde tilted her head. Her pale lavender eyes studied the stones around them. Ancient oak standing stones marked the boundary. They were taller than any man and wider than a door. Lichen grew in patterns that looked like script.

"The Grove does not like visitors," Isolde said. "It likes those who are invited."

"Did you invite me?" Aurora asked.

"I misled you," Isolde said. "That is not the same."

Nyx drifted closer to the largest stone. The shadow stretched across the moss without touching it.

"Time is thin here," Nyx said. "I can hear it thinning."

Rory checked her phone. No signal. The screen showed 4:17. She looked up and the sky above the trees was a deeper blue than the sky beyond the trees. The wind moved leaves that were not moving a moment before.

She took a step forward. The flowers brushed her calves. They bent and sprang back.

"Do not pick," Isolde said. "They remember."

"Remember what?" Aurora asked.

"They remember being picked."

A low sound rose from the center of the clearing. Not a bird. Not wind. A hum that vibrated in the teeth. The standing stones seemed to breathe with it. Aurora felt the hum in her wrist where the scar sat. The crescent-shaped mark tugged, as if something pulled at it from the other side of her skin.

Nyx's form solidified for a heartbeat, then thinned. The violet in their eyes brightened.

"There is a tear," Nyx said. "Beneath."

Aurora crouched. The grass there was different. It did not spring back. It lay flat in a perfect circle. The soil inside the circle was dark and damp, and it smelled of iron and old rain.

She reached out. Isolde caught her wrist with fingers cold as river stone.

"Do not touch the earth," Isolde said. "The Veil is thin here. It will read you."

Rory pulled her hand back. The pendant pulsed again, warm against her chest. The silver chain felt heavier.

"The Barrier weakens in winter," Aurora said. "You said."

"I speak in riddles," Isolde said. "You listen like a barrister."

Nyx circled the circle. Their shadow stretched impossibly long, reaching for the stones, retracting.

"Something is watching from below," Nyx said. "It tastes."

Aurora's throat went dry. She forced her shoulders down. Cool-headed was a reputation she had built on deliveries and bad dates and landlords who shorted her rent. It held.

"Can we close it?" she asked.

Isolde smiled without warmth. "The Veil is not a door you close. It is a wound you learn to live with."

A flower opened directly in front of Rory's face. Petals the color of bruised plums unfurled. It smelled of honey and rot. She jerked back and knocked a low branch. The branch did not break. It bent, then sang a single clear note that faded into the hum.

"Listen," Isolde said. "The Grove is not Earth. It is between."

Nyx stopped moving. Their silhouette went still, which was worse than motion. The air around them cooled.

"There is movement in the space between," Nyx said. "A shape. It does not have a name we know."

Aurora drew the dagger from the inside of her coat. Moonsilver caught the light that should not have been there. It was cold to the touch, even through the cloth. The faint luminescence along the leaf-shaped blade flared in moonlight that was not present.

Isolde's eyes tracked the blade.

"You were given that," Isolde said. "You were not told why."

"I was told it cuts wards," Aurora said. "And demons."

Nyx turned their head toward the circle. The violet in their eyes narrowed.

"It is coming up," Nyx said.

The hum rose. The stones shivered. A faint shimmering distortion rippled at the edge of the circle, visible only at the corner of vision, like heat above summer asphalt. Rory blinked and it was there. She blinked again and it was gone, then back.

The grass inside the circle began to move. Not wave. Move. It parted like water. Something pushed up from below, slow and deliberate, and the soil sighed.

Aurora stepped back until her heel hit the standing stone. The bark was warm. The stone was cold. The contrast made her teeth ache.

Isolde did not step back. She stood in the center of the clearing with her silver hair floating though there was no wind. No footprints marked the place where she had stood a minute before.

"The first time you see it," Isolde said, "you must not name it."

"What if I already have?" Aurora asked.

"You have the pendant," Isolde said. "That is a name. It is enough."

The shimmer thickened. The air smelled suddenly of warm amber and cooked fruit, an impossible sweetness that made Rory's stomach turn. The pendant flared hot against her chest. She clutched it, and the crescent scar on her wrist burned.

Nyx's voice dropped lower.

"It is not Fae," Nyx said. "It is Hel."

A shape rose through the grass.
