You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The ladder down to the platform ended in a puddle of grey water. Detective Harlow Quinn stepped off the last rung, boots landing shoulder-width apart, the worn leather watch on her left wrist winking under her torch beam. Eighteen years on the Met had stripped the awe out of her, but the Veil Market still tightened her shoulders. Beneath the abandoned Tube station, the market had swallowed the platform whole. Stalls crowded the tiles, shutters half-rolled, crates of bottled fog and jars of preserved breaths stacked in the shadows. A sign, hand-painted and crooked, advertised banned alchemical substances and information at a price. The air tasted of ozone and hot metal. Above the token gate, a hooded gatekeeper sat on a stool, a knucklebone disc turning in his fingers. Quinn had shown her own bone token on the way in, taken off a pickpocket in Whitechapel last spring. The gatekeeper's milky eyes had tracked her without blinking. The cordon flapped at the far end of the platform, blue tape strung between two rusted pillars. DC Vance stood just inside it, torch under his arm, hands deep in his coat pockets. Vance hooked a thumb towards the body behind him. "Deal gone wrong, ma'am. Junkie wanted a hit of liquid night, seller took offence, opened him up. Down here it's always the same story." Quinn ducked under the tape. The body lay on its back beside a stall selling second-hand prophecies. Male, late twenties, cheap coat, throat opened in a smile that went too deep. His coat pockets hung inside out like fabric tongues. A shattered vial leaked something black and tar-thick across the tiles, eating the grout with a faint hiss. In his left hand, loose against the palm, rested a bone token. A foot from his right hand, a small brass compass lay on the dirty tile, its face etched with protective sigils and green with verdigris. Quinn crouched, close enough to smell the copper of the blood and the burnt sugar of the spilled vial. She didn't touch. She looked. The blood had soaked the front of his shirt and pooled beneath him, but the stall canvas two feet away was clean. No arc of arterial spray. No misting on the prophecies pinned behind him. The pool had sunk into the cracks at the edges, but the concrete directly under his shoulders was dry, the dust undisturbed. His shoes were clean. She lifted her torch. The platform was thick with decades of grime, a black paste of oil and old rain, but the dead man's soles were near spotless, the tread crisp. Vance shifted his weight. "Pockets are out. Wallet's gone. Token's there, but another one turns up. Thief nicked his bag and his life. That's how it reads." Quinn stood, her knees clicking once. "If he came in to buy, he'd have handed that token over at the gate. You don't clutch a bone token through a slit throat unless somebody puts it there after the fact." Vance's mouth flattened. "He could've had a spare." "Spare tokens don't sit in a dead man's open hand. Fingers are loose. Look at them." A voice came from the other side of the tape. "He didn't come in through the gate." Quinn turned. Eva Kowalski stood hugging a worn leather satchel to her chest, round glasses reflecting the torch beam. Freckles scattered across her nose. She tucked a curl of red hair behind her left ear, the nervous habit betraying her even before she spoke again. Eva's gaze flicked to the compass, then away. "I was supposed to meet him an hour before the market opened. He deals in information. He said he had something from a Shade artisan. When he didn't show, I came looking. The stall canvas was down and he was... like that." Vance snorted. "You're telling me you happened to be down here, Miss Kowalski, in a place you need a dead man's knucklebone to enter?" Eva's chin came up. "I have a bone token. The Museum's restricted archives issue them for approved research. I'm not the one who cut his throat." Quinn watched the girl's hand tighten on the satchel strap. Books bulged the leather. She let the silence stretch, then crouched and took the brass compass in a gloved hand. The casing was small, warm despite the chill, the verdigris crusting the edges. She turned it over. The needle didn't swing north. It held steady, quivering, pointing at a sealed maintenance door set into the far wall of the station. The door was bricked up, iron bolts rusted over, a Tube notice from 1968 curling at the corner. Vance leaned in. "That's a trinket, ma'am. Stall junk. Tenner, if that." Quinn held it level. "A thief turns out a dead man's pockets and leaves a brass compass lying in reach? Trinkets don't get left. And this isn't a souvenir." She tapped the face with one gloved nail. "Veil Compass. Shade-made. The needle finds the nearest rift or portal. It's pointing at that door." Vance's torch beam jumped to the brickwork. "That's a cupboard. Bricked up years before I was born." "Then why is a compass that hunts rifts pointing at a cupboard?" Vance had no answer for that. He shone his light back at the body instead, as if the dead man would sit up and explain it himself. Quinn walked the perimeter, her boots crunching on glass. She stopped at the dry patch under the shoulders and then at the clean shoes. "Blood soaks his shirt, but there's no spray on that canvas. Throat cut here would put a fan of it on the prophecies. There'd be cast-off on the floor. Instead he's laid out neat, arms by his sides, pockets turned out after the fact. Somebody wanted us to see a robbery." She straightened and looked at Eva. "You said he deals in information. He never met you. Whoever killed him knew he had a meeting, knew the market would be busy, and wanted the body found here. They staged the pockets and the vial. They put the token in his hand." Eva swallowed. "They left the compass." Quinn's eyes went back to the brass in her palm. The needle strained towards the sealed door, the sigils on the face seeming to drink the torchlight. "They left it because they didn't know what it was. Or they wanted me to find that door." She slipped the compass into an evidence bag. "Either way, the robbery's theatre. He was killed somewhere else, carried in, and posed. The killer didn't come from the market crowd. They came from behind that door." Vance holstered his torch. "Came through a bricked-up cupboard? Ma'am, that's—" Quinn cut him off with a look. "Get that door opened. Photograph every brick before you move it. I want the gatekeeper's list of everyone who came in tonight, and I want every trader on this platform holding still." She checked the time. The worn leather watch on her left wrist read ten past three, the face scratched but clear. The market moved every full moon, and the full moon would peak in a few hours. When it shifted, the whole bloody place would relocate, stalls, body, evidence and all. Quinn started towards the sealed door, the evidence bag swinging from her fingers. "Move. Before this market packs up and takes our crime scene somewhere we can't follow." The needle inside the bag held steady, pointing at brick and old iron, and Quinn didn't look back at the body.
