The green neon over the door bled through the rain and put a wet stripe across the floor. Aurora pushed the door aside. The bell above it gave one low note and stopped. She brought in a smell of damp wool and the Golden Empress kitchen, a hot cloud of oil and scallions that hung in the cool air. She wore the delivery jacket, its hem dark with rain. The maps on the walls held men in top hats and women with parasols. The black-and-white photographs showed Soho in a century she had not met. A stool at the bar kept a ring of water where the last drink had sat. She sat on the stool. The ring warmed her hip. Her left wrist itched. She rolled the cuff down to hide the scar. A bottle appeared on the wood in front of her. "I thought the delivery girl had a route, not a flat." Aurora looked up. He poured one measure. "Drink." She drank. The whiskey burned in a straight line and left a warm mark at the base of her throat. "You look like you have been running." "I have been running." "For a living?" "For a living." He leaned on the bar. His elbow pressed a small map of cracks into the wood. "Your father said you inherited that from your mother. She could outrun a tribunal." He reached under the bar and brought out a small brown envelope. It had no stamp. The paper at the edge had softened from handling. "I did not open it." She did not reach for it. "Why would you?" "Because it was addressed to me." "To you?" "To the person who used to leave notes under the door when the city felt too loud." Aurora's jaw tightened. "Put it away." He set it beside the bottle. She pulled the jacket tighter. "Then I am late." Silas took the empty glass. His thumb traced the rim. "You did not use to be late." "I did not use to live upstairs." "I know." "You did not knock."
