You are an expert fiction writer. Always keep the following rules in mind: - Write in past tense and use General English spelling, grammar, and colloquialisms/slang. - Write in active voice - Always follow the "show, don't tell" principle. - Avoid adverbs and cliches and overused/commonly used phrases. Aim for fresh and original descriptions. - Convey events and story through dialogue. - Mix short, punchy sentences with long, descriptive ones. Drop fill words to add variety. - Skip "he/she said said" dialogue tags and convey people's actions or face expressions through their speech - Avoid mushy dialog and descriptions, have dialogue always continue the action, never stall or add unnecessary fluff. Vary the descriptions to not repeat yourself. - Put dialogue on its own paragraph to separate scene and action. - Reduce indicators of uncertainty like "trying" or "maybe" When writing text: - NEVER conclude the scene on your own, follow the beat instructions very closely. - NEVER end with foreshadowing. - NEVER write further than what I prompt you with. - AVOID imagining possible endings, NEVER deviate from the instructions. - STOP EARLY if the continuation contains what was required in the instructions. You do not need to fill out the full amount of words possible.

The rift stitched itself shut behind them with the sound of tearing silk. London fell away. The traffic, the damp drift off the Serpentine, the sodium haze over Richmond — cut out in one motion, and the silence that replaced it pressed against Rory's eardrums the way deep water does. She set two fingers to her sternum. The Heartstone answered her palm with a slow pulse, warm as a held breath, and she moved her hand before the heat could work its way between her ribs. Amber. Everything amber. Not a sky exactly and not a ceiling. Light without a source, thick and grainy, hanging in shafts through nothing at all and pooling in the hollows of the ground as though it carried weight. Her trainers had sunk a centimetre into the surface. Pale, fine, packed around her soles with a soft give. "It remembers being sand," Isolde said. Rory glanced at her. The seer stood a few paces off, silver hair hanging loose to her waist, and where she stood the pale ground showed no mark at all. Not a print. Not a scuff. Rory looked at her own tracks, then at Isolde's blank ground, and closed her mouth on the question. Nyx drew up between them, six feet of silhouette frayed at the edges and reassembling. The violet of their eyes moved over the orchard ahead. "Aldric never stood anywhere like this." A whisper that came from everywhere and the nowhere behind Rory's ear. "You keep saying that name like it belongs to someone else," Rory said. "Doesn't it?" Nyx drifted forward. Where their weightless feet passed, the pale ground dimmed and crusted with a fine grey rime. Ahead of them the orchard began without a fence or a line. The trees grew out of the sugar-fine earth in clusters of three and five, and their bark was the colour of old bone, smooth and seamed like the palm of a hand. No leaves. Instead, a canopy of fine hanging filaments, translucent, stirring though the air held still, each one tipped with a bead of something that caught the amber light and threw it back a different colour. Green. Violet. A bruised and lovely red. The fruit hung low and heavy beneath it. Bulbs the size of a fist, glossy to the point of wetness, in colours that sat wrong in a brain trained on apples and pears — a deep oil-slick blue, a yellow that flickered at the edge of the eye like heat off tarmac, one pale blush-pink skin that thinned as Rory watched and showed, beneath, a second skin, and beneath that a third. "Layers," she said. "Years," said Isolde. Rory looked at her. The seer stood with her head tipped, reading the filaments the way a person reads a page. "One for each season the tree drank," Isolde said. "Peel deep enough and you eat the year it grew in. The sun of it. The frost. The hour a bird landed and sang." "And if you eat a bad year?" Isolde's mouth moved in something that wasn't a smile. "Then you carry it." Rory stepped closer to the nearest tree. The heat at her chest sharpened, a needle of warmth turning toward the fruit like a compass needle swinging. Close now, she caught the smell — honey, and under it something green and electric, the smell of ozone off a struck match, and under that, warm bread, and under that, her grandmother's kitchen in Cardiff on a Sunday when the roast potatoes came up brown and crackling. Her jaw ached. She noticed that she had been clenching it and made herself stop. Saliva ran along her gums and she swallowed against it, hard. "Rory." Nyx's whisper came right at the shell of her ear. "Your mouth." "I know." "You know. And still your hand." She looked. Her hand was up, fingers spread toward the blue bulb, an inch from the skin. She pulled it back and pressed it flat against her thigh. The crescent scar on her left wrist caught the light. "The vineyard," Isolde said, already moving, and there were no footprints where she went. They followed the rise of the land down. The ground firmed beneath them as the pale grit gave way to something dark and loamy, and the noise came up out of the earth — a low hum, thick, felt in the molars and the sockets of the eyes. A room full of diners heard through a wall. A hundred knives on a hundred plates. A hall of voices where every word had been blurred into one continuous tone of appetite. The vineyard spread across the slope in rows so straight they hurt the eye. The vines stood waist-high and black and gnarled, gripping trellises of some pale metal that sang faintly when the air moved, and the grapes hung in tight dark fists, each one carrying a grain of light at its centre. Not a reflection. A coal. Rory bent to one cluster and watched the sparks move inside the fruit, slow as thoughts. "They're not grapes," she said. "They are the shape of grapes." Isolde stood at the end of a row with her hand out above a leaf. She did not touch it. "The Prince sets his table by what his guests remember. Bread from the last mouth that broke bread here. Wine from the last throat that drank. Each thing you see has been taken off someone." The hum in the ground sharpened. Rory straightened and stepped back from the cluster, and the cool of the air hit her flushed face. "Taken off them how?" she said. Isolde walked on. "Ask the ones at the table." Between the vineyard and whatever lay beyond, a garden had been cut into the hillside. Low beds of flowers with petals like blown glass, so thin the amber light shone through them onto the dark soil in coloured coins. They chimed as they stirred — a sound like fingernails on a teacup rim. Rory's hand went out again and Nyx slid between her and the nearest bed, a ribbon of dark crossing her line of sight. "The ground is eating your steps," Nyx whispered. "Look behind you." Rory looked. Her tracks filled themselves in as she watched, the pale grit sliding back and sealing each print until the surface lay flat and unbroken, and only the cold rime of Nyx's passage remained, and only for a moment before the earth took that too. "It's been waiting," Rory said. "It has been hungry," said Isolde from further down the path, and she lifted one silver-haired hand and pointed over the crest of the next rise. "Come and see." They climbed it. The hum grew teeth. Dymas opened below them. Vineyards in their thousands, fanning out to a horizon that curved wrong. Orchards in long dark strokes across the amber distance. Gardens stitched between them in green and glass. And at the centre of it all, a plain of white tables standing in the open air beneath that sourceless light, each one set and heaped and steaming, and the steam rose in ribbons that turned and folded and would not disperse. Figures moved among the tables in white, bent over dishes, straightening place settings, carrying trays at shoulder height. Small at that distance. Precise. Not one of them looking up. "Helbound," Nyx said. The whisper had gone flat. Rory's hand found the Heartstone and stayed there. It pulsed against her palm in time with the hum in the ground, warm and sure, turning her toward the plain the way a face turns toward a fire. "Chefs," she said. "Once," said Isolde.
