You are an expert novelist with a gift for vivid, immersive prose. You write in tight third-person limited point of view with a strong narrative voice. Your prose is clean, precise, and engaging — you favor strong verbs, concrete details, and natural-sounding dialogue. You will be given a story bible (codex) containing canonical details about characters, locations, items, and lore. Use these details to ground your writing in the established world. Stay consistent with the codex. Write only the prose of the scene. Do not include titles, chapter headings, markdown formatting, or any commentary before or after the scene.

The portal opened in the lee of a standing stone, where the light went strange and the grass grew wrong. Rory felt it before she saw it — a low thrum in her teeth, and the Heartstone against her sternum going suddenly, traitorously warm. She pressed two fingers to the pendant through her shirt. The little crimson gem had been cool all morning. Now it pulsed like a second heart, beating time against her ribs. "Here?" she said. "This is the place?" Beside her, Isolde was already walking toward the oak. The seer left no mark in the wet earth — no print, no crushed clover — and by now Rory had stopped flinching at it, though the back of her neck still prickled. Isolde's silver hair hung loose to her waist, beaded with the fine mist that had been falling over Richmond since dawn. She did not seem to feel the cold. "The door was older than the trees," Isolde said, without turning. "And the trees remember the Flood. But doors do not care to be found twice in the same way, so we must hurry, or it will decide it would rather not be found at all." Behind Rory, the shadow under the oak thickened, gathered itself, and stood up. Nyx unfolded to their full height, a cut-out of night in the shape of a person, all edges and silence. Their eyes were the only solid thing about them — faint violet, faintly glowing, like embers under ash. "It's open," Nyx said. Their voice came from everywhere at once, the sound of wind threading through a crack. "I can feel the other side. It's... loud." Rory did not ask what loud meant to a being that lived in the spaces between things. She squared her shoulders, checked that the moonsilver blade was loose in her boot sheath — always cold, that blade, cold enough to ache through the leather — and stepped through after Isolde. The world folded. Not sideways, not up. It folded the way a page folds, and for one dislocated instant Rory was looking at Richmond Park from somewhere that had no distance in it, and then the amber hit her. Warm amber sky. Not sunset-amber — a fixed, sourceless honeyed glow that came from everywhere and cast no proper shadows. It pressed against the eyes like looking at a lamp through honeycomb. The air that filled her lungs was heavy and sweet, almost chewable, and warm as a kitchen in mid-afternoon. Fruit-sweet. Yeasty. Under it, something older and more animal: turned earth, ferment, the green rot of plenty. "Jesus," Rory breathed. They stood on a terrace of black stone, at the top of a flight wide enough to march a regiment down. Below and beyond, the land fell away in terraces and swooped up again into low hills, and every inch of it was cultivated to within an inch of its life — vineyards stitched in ropes across the slopes, orchards in ordered riot, trellises and arbors and long green corridors of espaliered trees, all of it heavy, all of it loaded past bearing. Fruit hung in clusters so dense the branches bowed. Grapes the colour of bruises sagged on the vine. Somewhere below, water ran and ran over stone. Dymas. Gluttony. It looked less like damnation than the best September anyone had ever had. Isolde stood at the top of the stair with her head tilted, as though listening to a conversation conducted two rooms away. "The Prince sets a fine table," she said. "But it is the cook who deserves the pity. There has always been a cook here. There has always needed to be." Nyx came through the fold a moment later and immediately went still, their silhouette flickering at the edges. "The shadows here don't lie down properly," they murmured. Something in their tone made Rory glance back. "They're... overfed." "Stay close," Rory said. "Both of you. We look, we find out what's bleeding through into London, and we go. Nobody eats anything." Nyx made a sound that might have been a laugh. They descended. The stair was old — old in the way of things that had been worn by feet rather than weather. Each tread was hollowed in its centre, a shallow dish, and in those hollows stood a finger's depth of clear liquid that did not evaporate and did not spill. Rory stepped around them out of instinct and was faintly ashamed of it. Isolde walked straight through and left no ripple. At the foot of the stair the cultivated land began, and with it the noise Nyx had warned of. It was not loud in the way of crowds. It was the sound of ripening — the tick and creak of fruit swelling against its own skin, the wet sigh of grapes splitting on the vine, the plump percussion of things falling and being caught. Fallen fruit lay everywhere, untouched, going soft and then further than soft. The sweetness thickened as they walked until Rory breathed through her mouth. "Nothing's rotting," she said slowly. She crouched by a fallen pear the size of her fist and turned it with one finger. The skin was unbroken. Under it the flesh gave like a heartbeat. "It just... keeps going. Past ripe and no further." "A larder that is never shut," Isolde said. She had picked up nothing, touched nothing. Her lavender eyes tracked the trellises the way a reader's eyes track a line. "A mouth that is never full. Ask the vine what it costs to be so generous, and it will tell you it does not know the word." Rory filed that away, which was how she dealt with Isolde. You wrote down everything and read it back later, when the riddle decided to become a sentence. They cut left along a terrace path, toward the structure that rose at the valley's heart. From the stair it had looked like a hill. Closer, it resolved: a building, or the fossil of one — vast, low, roofless, its black stone the same as the terrace, colonnaded along its flanks with pillars that had been carved to look like bundled wheat, sheaves bound with stone rope. Vines had taken it. Not strangled it — taken it, the way a host takes a guest's coat. The greenery was combed and tended right up to the lintels. Inside the doorway — no door, only a threshold worn dish-deep — the light changed. The amber dimmed to something like candlewax. Rory's eyes adjusted slowly, and the hall unfolded out of the gloom in pieces: a floor of dark stone slabs with channels cut along them, still wet; tables. Long tables, dozens of them, running the length of the hall in parallel ranks, each one a single piece of timber, each one still set. Plates of a pale greenish ceramic. Cups. Knives with the black shine of obsidian, their edges still keen. All of it layered in dust fine as powder — centuries of it — and all of it waiting. Rory stopped walking. "They never cleared it away," she said. Nyx moved between the tables, and the dust did not rise where they passed. Their violet eyes caught on the place settings, the arrangement of the cups, the exactness of it. "Someone stood up in the middle of it," they said. "Look. No one pushed back a chair. No one broke anything. They just... left. And then the dust came and no one came back to sweep it." A sound went through the hall then — deep, long, felt in the chest and the soles of the feet before it was heard. Every hanging vine shivered. Dust lifted and settled again in a slow grey curtain. The Heartstone at Rory's breast flared hot enough to make her hiss through her teeth and snatch at it, and beneath her hand she felt the pulse stutter into a frantic double-beat. "What was that," she said. It was not a question. Isolde had gone very still in the centre aisle. Her head was tilted again, and her expression — normally a kind of distant amusement — had emptied out. "The kitchen," she said. "The kitchen is still working." Nyx solidified a fraction more; Rory could see it happen, the blur of their edges sharpening into something with weight. "That wasn't a kitchen," they whispered. "That's a heartbeat. Something in here has one." The warmth at Rory's chest was pointing now — not pulsing but pulling, faintly, the way a compass needle trembles before it commits. Toward the far end of the hall, where the tables thinned and gave way to a wide descending ramp, black stone, wet channels gleaming along its edges, running down into the dark under the earth. Warm air breathed up out of it, sweet and sour at once, and with it came the sound of that great slow mechanism turning over — stone on stone, water, and something like chewing. Rory thought of London. She thought of Yu-Fei shouting at her to make the deliveries on time, and Silas polishing glasses under the yellow light of the flat she paid too much for, and Eva's voice on the phone saying come home, come home. She thought of how the rifts had been widening all winter, and how the Wardens had stopped answering, and how she had found the pendant in her delivery bag one Tuesday with no note and no memory of who put it there. She pulled the Fae blade from her boot. It came free cold enough to sting her palm, and in the amber half-light of the feast hall it woke to its own faint luminescence, a sliver of captured moon in a world that had never seen the moon. "Right," she said. "We go and look at the kitchen." "Rory," Nyx said — and it was the first time all day they had used her name, which told her more than she wanted to know. "If we go down there and it is what I think it is, the way back may not stay where we left it." "Then we don't leave it for long." She looked at Isolde. "How much time do we have? And I mean in hours, not in riddles." The seer's lavender eyes came back from wherever they had gone. She looked at the descending ramp, and at the moonsilver in Rory's hand, and something almost like sorrow crossed her features. "One hour inside," Isolde said. "Perhaps. The place is hungry, and hungry things eat the clock first. Whatever you mean to do down there, Rory Carter — do it quickly, and do not sit at any table, no matter whose name is carved into the chair." Rory nodded once. She rolled the pendant's chain around her fist until the gem sat hot against her knuckles, and she walked toward the ramp with the blade low and the two of them falling in behind her — the shade who did not quite exist and the seer who did not quite belong — and the breath of the place came up to meet them, warm and sweet and bottomless, and the dark below took them one step at a time.
